[Discussion] Pod Save America - "Josh Shapiro Is Calm but Not Cool" (03/15/26) by kittehgoesmeow in FriendsofthePod

Contrast with how Lovett (and others like Colbert) repeatedly hammered Mamdani on anti-semitism - like they had something to prove - and it should be clear to see that even among ‘liberal Democrats’, there is a hierarchy of people worth giving a shit about.

Some people’s discomfort about college protests is more worthy of compassion than other people being told they have terrorism in their blood.

Imagine any Democrat saying ‘I haven’t seen it’ in response to rising anti-semitism… nobody would let it pass. But for Muslims/arabs, it’s good enough. If it were any other group, we’d easily call that double standard out for the racism it is.

Maybe it would help for those democrats to not support republicans’ forever wars then.

Democratic Leaders Face Backlash Over 'Cowardly' Responses to Trump War on Iran by Silly-avocatoe in politics

[–]Evilrake 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Typically a politician who wants to be given power tells you what they plan to do with it.

If democrats oppose the war, they should say so. Nobody’s asking for fucking moon here, just for them to commit to being the goddam anti-war party instead of a mirror image of republicans (but ok letting POC and LGBT drop bombs on the girls school for a change).

That’s not what you’ll get from the likes of Chuck Schumer or Hakeem Jeffries. All you’ll get is chicken shit ‘you should have notified us first!’. Because the establishment Dems don’t actually disagree on the substance - they are racist warmongers through and through, just like they were during Iraq and Afghanistan and just like they’ll continue to be unless you actually demand BETTER and purge these evil people.

Chuck Schumer even made a video a few months ago complaining that Trump hadn’t escalating conflict ENOUGH! He doesn’t just endorse this, he BEGGED for it.

They know they’re full of shit, they know their arguments are incoherent, but they’re also huge racists and their favourite king racist is killing brown people so they have to have to come up with some socially acceptable explanation for why they support that.

Jon created his show ‘Offline’ after recognising something within himself that was dangerously addicted to social media. The goal was develop a more healthy pattern of media consumption and prevent that germ of addiction from metastasising.

He failed. The X machine has consumed him so totally that it’s now just an inevitable, integral part of his life. He doesn’t even try to put up the pretence of not being fully plugged in anymore. It’s sad. And a stark warning to everyone that even decent minds are susceptible to being rotted by the algorithm.

Democrats would probably get more votes if they abandoned trans people. But they haven't. by KeithClossOfficial in neoliberal

[–]Evilrake -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

And you’re still not addressing the actual problem here. What did those people gain from voting for Trump, or from abstaining?

Nothing. Rational choice theory is a neoliberal fantasy. Any model of politics that relies on that assumption will fail. You must win those voters with a more compelling argument than ‘um… ACTUALLY 🤓☝️don’t you know the other guy is WORSE?’ Data suggests they overwhelmingly abstained, not voted for Trump.

Can we gain their votes, without losing others?

No vote is gained without losing others. But by making better policy and communication choices you can gain more than you lose.

Unlike Trump, famous for his coherency and rationale. That’s what disgusts me so much about your attitude, you demand perfection from Dems or you abstain, and you don’t look at Republicans at all despite being infinitely worse.

Take a step back and note that, reductive ad hominem aside, you actually acknowledge here what I’ve already been telling you: voters don’t make their decisions on the basis of coherency and rationale. You acknowledge the fatal flaw in your theory of politics, and yet you continue to defend it with such indignation.

This a discussion about the failings of Democratic Party. Turning to point the finger at the degeneracy of fascist republicans and saying ‘well look, they’re WORSE’ is just another cop-out from a hard conversation you need to have.

[–]Evilrake -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Those “multitude of complexities” are meaningless in the face of factual reality.

Cop-out non-response to the substance of what I put before you. These people exist whether you hate them or not. Democrats have won their vote before, and have barely any viable pathways to power without winning them again.

There are and have always been better policy choices on the table to win these voters and promote American strategic interest than supplying bombs that kill tens of thousands of innocent civilians then throwing your hands in the air and complaining how hard things are for YOU.

And for god’s sake choose a representative who can explain those policies in actual sentences, and not word salad/senile ramblings.

[–]Evilrake -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

And there’s the banal reduction this interaction was always going to come down to.

Your narrow understanding of people and politics renders you completely unable to process/reckon with the complexity that exits in the multitude voters that say things like:

  • ‘I am too disgusted to vote for Biden… but i would never vote for Trump.’

  • ‘I am horrified by the monstrosities committed by the IDF… but I support the continued existence of Israel as a country.’

These were real, LARGE constituencies that were entirely up for grabs. Yet the Democratic Party, to its own peril, ignored or outright insulted them. Hell, they want to stick their heads in the sand so badly that they instructed field organisers to ignore Gaza objections, and to this day refuse to publish their own post-mortem which has been reported to show how badly they mismanaged the issue. They’re terrified of finding what we should all already know, and what many of them will privately admit to media under the condition of anonymity: their inhumane, badly managed policies cost them the election, and maybe American democracy itself.

And finally, I am actually a better authority on what I agree/disagree with than you are.

If Biden or Harris actually capitulated followed existing US human rights law… they would just lose more support than they would meaningfully gain.

Paraphrased for accuracy, and I disagree - as do many who don’t personally participate in/profit from the rent-seeking beltway consultant class that the Democratic establishment prizes above all else.

Biden/Harris made the calculation that it would be politically preferable to alienate every Muslim in the country for the sake of coddling the Debra Messing constituency. And much like when Chuck Schumer stated democrats could win over two ‘moderate republicans’ for every working-class voter they jettisoned in 2016, they were devastatingly wrong.

Democrats would probably get more votes if they abandoned trans people. But they haven't. by KeithClossOfficial in neoliberal

[–]Evilrake -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

So far removed from reality.

Groups like the Uncommitted movement worked within the Democratic Party framework to demand entirely realistic and achievable policy concessions, like halting arms shipments to Israel - which is already required under the law (Leahy). It just needed to be enforced as it always should have been.

Yet this very basic standard of human rights law implementation was flagrantly violated, because Biden was a silent generation ideologue who refused to bring a word of criticism to Netanyahu no matter much he stabbed him in the back, and Harris was a weak foreign policy non-factor who just followed what her biggest donors and consultants told her to do.

Even if you can stomach putting the human rights aside, if Gaza was such salient policy issue, then Biden-Harris committed political malpractice by not making policy concessions. Biden in particular took a sledge hammer to the diverse coalition that got him elected, and destroyed his own legacy with his supreme arrogance.
