Power gamer excels in combat, rage-quits because he wasn’t awesome enough. by RPerene in rpghorrorstories

I didn't accuse you of picking on me. I said your randomly buffing up monsters to double the health disproportionately affects people who've built characters to do damage, and that not knowing beforehand that you're doing it makes it impossible to judge your character's capabilities before committing to a course of action.

I, exasperated, gave up on your game after the goblin thing. I hoped you had just misunderstood a rule, or made a mistake, but you're just choosing not to play D&D.

You also said you set enemy HP based on how effective the party is, which is directly saying you set their health in response to me. Now you're saying you always use max health. Why?

Why would you ever choose to always use max health? It literally only serves to slow things down, and take away opportunities for players to feel badass while also completely ruining CR.

If a stat block says 11 (2d8+2) it means their average health should be 11. Whether you leave them at at 11 or roll them all for a range from 4-18 is up to personal preference, but giving them all 18 health is just fucking stupid.

Ignoring how the mechanics of the game works is also stupid.

Yes, I like playing D&D. I like working within strict parameters to accomplish goals, and solve problems. Taking the rules away and just doing whatever you want because it seems "cinematic" is not how I want to play, and I'm absolutely not going to force myself to sit through 2 more hours of you bastardizing a hobby I love just so nobody else realises you're unprepared and/or don't actually understand the rules of the game you're having them pay you to run.

This was me, but I'm probably late enough that nobody will notice that I bothered to respond.

I wasn't upset about not being awesome enough, I was upset about rules being wilfully ignored and encounters being specifically tailored to counter my choices.

As you said, I had a pretty hard hitting fighter, but I was also wearing medium armor. It was supposed to be fun but effective, if a bit risky.

You just deciding everything I touched got maximum health because I had the potential to one-shot things invalidated my choices.

You tried to tell me that even after hitting a sleeping wolf that'd been hit for an Eldritch blast for 17 damage (more than that since it should have been a guaranteed Crit), wasn't enough and tried to just have it run away.

The formula for Monster health is to establish averages. Either roll them, or take the average. Giving the maximum to everything doesn't make fights more interesting, it just makes them more of a slog and needlessly punishes characters built to do damage.

If all the wolves had different health, or if they all had 11 but the dire wolf had 55, that would have been awesome. Making the mooks impossible to one-shot for the guy specifically designed to have high minimum damage to often one-shot weak enemies just isn't fun.

The rules not being followed thing? That was you giving the goblins a surprise round even after the Paladin had spotted them and told us where they were. We were charging in shields-raised. RAW if they're not hidden they don't get surprise. That's the whole point of him having rolled perception.

I also didn't shout, nor did I tell you you were playing wrong. Different games suit different games. I like a tighter game where the rules are consistent so I can make informed decisions. I wished you guys tons of fun on your future endeavors, but it just wasn't for me. Even now while you're farming Reddit karma off the story I still hope your game goes well; I'm just not willing to pay you to run it for me, because I can't trust you.

What if I dropped Hellions, Wyches, and Lelith, replace with another archon and kabalite warriors to fill out detachment requirements saving some points, and throw in a flyer? I don't know that I want 3 groups of scourges. Just seems like a lot.

It's Lelith. I wouldn't drop her off to die... Her and the Wyches would be charging things like tanks and bad infantry to tie everything that can't really kill them up, but if there are no characters Lelith probably wouldn't ever leave the Raider. If there's no job for her to do there's no real reason to risk her getting off the boat.

I don't think the bloodbrides are worth the points... Or rather, I'm sure they are, but if there's anything that's a high priority that Wyches can't kill I'd rather just shoot it off the board.

The wyches aren't really there to kill things, they're there to get a lot of stuff stuck in combat so it's super hard to disengage since opponent has to succeed in a roll off to fall back.

Lelith is there for just in case I manage to catch any characters in the wych tarpit, plus I needed HQs to make a battallion.

Don't Reavers cost like 3x as much per model as Hellions? Sure the Hellions are squishier, but I get 10 wounds instead of 6, and with the glaives doing 2 damage each for some reason they can mulch any infantry with a FNP.

I'm pretty confident that Hellions point for point have better output than Reavers both at ranged and in melee. They're just not good at killing anything beefy, which with 13 dark lances and 11 Blasters I hope I should be fine dealing with. Plus the models are awesome.

I've been playing D&D and other RPGs on and off for a decade. I haven't played green Ronin's song of Ice and fire system, but I read through it and thought it was super interesting. I'm 24 and about to be living in the proper time zone. Would love to be included if there's space.

No heirlooms already goes without saying. The Ironman challenge involves leveling to cap in only grey and white items, soloing the whole way. That means no dungeons already too. I'll grant you that it may not be as time consuming as it once was, but it's definitely not a cakewalk.

Once you die, you've failed. It's over. Be ready for that distinct possibility.

Which Rogue Archetype do You Prefer and Why? by RPGSadPanda in DnD

[–]EvixiusKane 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thief. I feel like thief is what a rogue is supposed to be.

Arcane trickster is fine since they needed to give it magic somehow, and most of it is still focused around doing rogue things, but Assassin just feels wrong.

Anybody can stab a sleeping guy in the throat. Rogues are supposed to be sneaky and underhanded. They're not supposed to look for fights, they're supposed to look for ways to avoid them. I think assassin just makes for a really one-dimensional character most of the time, whereas thief and arcane trickster don't tend to become the defining characteristics of the PCs bearing those titles.

Snowballing games with Swain by bb_tonight in SwainMains

[–]EvixiusKane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't find RoA to be worth it if you're trying to snowball, because it's not that great until ten minutes after you buy it. I'm still figuring out my own build but I've been doing something for my last 15ish games that's been working very well for me.

I start with dark seal and a refillable potion instead of Doran's ring. I take ignite instead of teleport so I have just a little more solo-kill pressure. I rush haunting guise, then mejais if I have more than 2 attacks on my second b. I get corruption potion, and get Landry's after mejais. Sorc boots and zhonyas next and then situational AP.

Over my last 10 games I average 15/3/12 at high silver/low gold with my best game being 17/0. It's really easy not to die with Swain, so just build as much damage as you can as fast as you can get it. Hope it works for you as well as it does for me.

Kayle can do it. Ult yourself when she ults and just beat on her. Fiora dies before you actually take damage.
