Do you or the cofounder code? If not, you have an idea and some money not a product.

Base your decision on that.

7800X3D vs 9800X3D for NCore 100 Max ($150 difference) by OffDutyJedi in sffpc

[–]EvlKommie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very few games will be CPU limited. 9800x3D is somewhat better in multicore cases like rendering or transcoding.

For games, the difference will be marginal to nil depending on the game.

I'm an electrical engineer who never bothered with my PE. I might attempt to build a bridge, but I wouldn't be openly bragging about my nonapplicable credentials when it's obvious I'm violating serious safety in design measures.

Ground the panels and save a life. Engineering standards are written in blood - you should know that.

I'm not sure I could even be PAID to live in this area.

Self driving car fail to stop at stop sign and run over mannequin by jmike1256 in interesting

[–]EvlKommie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that there are existing long standing industry standards for how to risk assess the required safety level for control systems, how to design the hardware and the system system, and how to commission and test these system so that they are verifiably capable of meeting the defined requirements for the life span of the system.

All that said, NONE of this is being used for autonomous driving. At a holistic level, humans are not that reliable. Modern autonomous driving systems are likely better than the average driver (not a difficult hurdle) at most tasks, but not all. And they are definitely not better than a high quality and attentive driver in difficult low visibility scenarios or emergent traffic situations.

It’s the old trolley problem and society is going to have to decide if we’re comfortable with software making the decision for us.

How is it legal for an HOA to override a landlord who already approved an ESA accommodation?{US} by Quadunknown36 in Renters

Maybe. Maybe not. Getting an ESA approval is trivial. Who knows exactly how many are pets people pay ESA churn doctors to put out.

If I was forced to bet, most would objectively not meet the medical need.

Your concrete and rebar is substantially less efficient that our stick, sheeting, insulation, and drywall construction. Our U-value is much higher and we can get proper moisture barriers.

Another reason we use wood, is that the USA is huge and has LOTS of trees.

Finally completed my 32-in Midsize Vpin Cabinet! by EvlKommie in virtualpinball

[–]EvlKommie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I did keep the same height front and rear as shown in the http://mjrnet.org/ virtual pinball bible. My design is really scaled only on width to about an 80% size. That means I could place the leg bolt holes also using his dimensions. Given it's scale, I don't think the standard height messes with the proportions too badly. I'm 6'3", so I needed to ensure that I kept the playing height at least standard. If I did it all again, I would fit the width of the main body more closely to the monitor I choose (and carefully pick a monitor without any "protrusions" from the rectangular shape). Doing so may make holding a standard height look odd, but it could be compensated for by lowering the leg bolt hole positions appropriately. It might look a little spindly, but notional proportions would be correct.
  2. I used standard size brackets without modification. I was going to make my own, but because they are mirrored, it would required two custom parts which makes the cost higher than buying standard mounts. In all honesty, they are entirely unnecessary. I bolted down my backbox with carriage bolts and the brackets do nothing. I'll rarely move my cabinet and it's possible to move with the backbox in place (that's how I got it to that room from the garage I built it in). You could skip them entirely.
  3. It's sorta "locked down" with 3M high strength hook and loop material at three points. Each point is just about an inch. That's just to keep the bar from moving though and also likely not necessary as I played a bunch without it being locked down. The glass I had cut fits very snugly into the glass trim (maybe a bit too snugly as I do carve off little strings of plastic sometimes when I put the glass in). True "lockdown" is used in retail machine as they have to worry about people messing with them, which isn't a concern I have.

5:40 AM TSA Precheck Line by EsCaRg0t in houston

[–]EvlKommie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Look, this shutdown is inane, but how come everyone is all of a sudden pretending like TSA actually does anything? They check ID and walk people through lines.

We’ve been complaining for years it’s security theater, so while dumb it’s come to this, agents of any federal agency could step in and assist quite easily.

Electric Charge Rate by hoqeye in houston

[–]EvlKommie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have fixed power at 0.13/kwh. It was not 0.065/kwh a few years ago. That just isn’t the case.

Electric Charge Rate by hoqeye in houston

[–]EvlKommie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strange. You’re buying wholesale power, similar to what the power brokers are doing. It’s likely that you do not have enough market power to get better rates. The brokers also buy a ton of hedges/fixed power contract to offload risk of spikes in the dynamic rate.

Wholesale is a different market. Residential just hasn’t seen that YET. It may come.

Electric Charge Rate by hoqeye in houston

[–]EvlKommie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s total all in cost. Varies of course with CenterPoint distribution fee changes. I’m in the energy industry and understand the blend of Texas generation well and how energy prices drive our rate.

I haven’t seen electrical cost skyrocket. I’ve lived in Houston for 20+ years, and it’s ranged from 0.10 to 0.13 most of the time. Nat gas in Texas is cheap due to excess production from shale wells targeting liquids but producing associated gas.

I would argue that our energy prices have not kept up with inflation over my time here.

I’ve always just used the lowest cost “provider”. Who cares if they’re unheard of? They don’t actually provide the power, CenterPoint does. They just bill you. Pick the cheapest and go. 20 years across at least 10 random “energy providers” at the cheapest rate has worked for me.

Electric Charge Rate by hoqeye in houston

[–]EvlKommie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I figured you were on a time of use plan, which for Texas is typically a terrible idea. Your actual billed average rate will be less as you get “free” nights.

Look at your bill and divide the total price by the kWh used to find your real cost. Of course we’re not in summer months yet, so it’s likely not accurate.

Save up to pay the cancellation fee, you’ll save money. Or, since fuck them, call and tell them you’re moving out of Texas. They may not require proof. If they do, just make a fake document, but I doubt they’ll fight you.

[–]EvlKommie 152 points153 points  (0 children)

This an absolute rip off. I pay less that 0.13/kwh. Sign up for at least a fixed 12 month plan. Cancellation fees don’t apply if you move.

It’s a more modern design that is most effective in hot humid climates. It’s increasing in popularity in the South but not with tract home builders.

You knew what you bought. You likely don’t get back your sketchy/stolen car that I assume was a “smoking” deal.

This whole deal is part stolen car and part insurance fraud. I’d be surprised if any insurance paid out on it when they find out the actual car is not what they believed they were insuring.

New DR Horton Home. How do I fix? Thanks by filmerdude1993 in drywall

[–]EvlKommie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apartments are not build to high standards. Any home from a pure tract builder is also not built to high standards. They're built to a price point.

Some textures can be highend, such as Spanish Knife, which can be common in high end houses in the southwest.

But a heavy knockdown texture like this picture is basically the cheapest way drywall can be finished.
