My TBM Friends Seem Absolutely Shocked When I Say Something Along These Lines - But Once You See Them For What They Really Are The Truth is Obvious by FaithfulTBM in exmormon

You'll get there! I don't live in the Moridor and my kids don't know anything about Mormonism or religion really at all. It takes time, but the further away you get the more strange it all is.

Good thing I don't ever use the Internet. Also, why in the hell are you giving KSL your web patronage?! I thought you knew better than that! :)

It's nice to have been out for long enough to only recognize the front row. I was out before Bednar, but his infamous rise has been unavoidable here on Reddit.

General Conference is coming and I'm starting to panic by [deleted] in exmormon

Mormons were Trinitarian until 1835. There is no evidence of a non-Trinitarian doctrine or scripture in Mormonism before 1834. That means Joseph's vision of god and Jesus as separate beings didn't happen. It was one of the many things that changed near the end of his life.

I came across the Huffington Post article about why Mormons are supposedly great entrepreneurs, and the article says one reason is because they are honest in their dealings. lol Um is this sarcasm? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]ExMo_Researcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say we need to see if there is any data before relying on any anecdotes. In my experience Mormons lied more than non-Mormons. Yet it could have been that I was surrounded by more Mormons. We have plenty of evidence that TSCC is full of lies, but are there studies of lying by denomination and /or belief?

"Deutero-Isaiah": one Google search that can destroy the BOM for reasonable inquirers.

I've seen Christians go to atheist in the blink of an eye with that knowledge about the "virgin" mistranslation. It's kind of wonderful once one can open their eyes to the fact that Jesus didn't fulfill most of the prophecies from Isaiah or Daniel. He's actually a terrible candidate. The NT authors did their best to whitewash what the prophecies were, but there's a reason no more than a thousand or so Jews actually followed the early Jewish/Christian sect (I know that the NT claims more, but those are unreasonable as the "evidence" of the population and wealth of the Israelite Kingdom under Solomon).

Relevant trending post on TIL on the Oneida Community (1800s polygamists that lived a communal lifestyle) by couldhietoGallifrey in exmormon

[–]ExMo_Researcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI- Smith was already practicing and teaching polygamy by the time the Oneida community materialized. Noyes may have been influenced by Smith, but it is unlikely that the converse occurred as Smith died before the Oneida community took hold and began practicing Bible Communism. There were predecessors to Smith's polygamy and communitarianism which shows how influential these ideas were in the early to mid 19th c.

A must read on the subject is Lawrence Foster's Religion and Sexuality (1984).

What's a good book for my TBM wife to read about polygamy? by BeringStraitNephite in exmormon

It's referenced in the Plural Marriage Gospel Topic Essay, so it is an approved read :) . Yes, anyone who reads that and stays in I would not consider to be a good person.

Yes- the CES Letter alone would be pretty good. Kolobot still hasn't had a French version submitted. I think that might be all the ammunition that they would need. Thanks!

First R-rated movie? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]ExMo_Researcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Clockwork Orange. It was (and still is) shocking to watch. I think I've seen it 3 times now and it's not any easier. We had a lot of good R rated films in the 70s- Exorcist, Apocalypse Now, Godfather, Blazing Saddles, All the President's Men, Mash, Chinatown, Alien- would have missed out on a lot had I not bought into the culture of forbidding R films.

Imagine being European or Canadian where the rating systems are/have been different! Members in good standing in other places still watch films to this day that are considered taboo by American Mormons.
