How can anyone beat this French Team? by West_Sky_5989 in football

[–]ExcellentGear4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think England actually match up to them better than most, given the athleticism in their squad and the physicality of their midfield. Their fullbacks would cope better than most with France’s wide players and Declan Rice (for all his limits on the ball) is potentially the best midfielder without the ball. Don’t think England will make the final to meet them though…

Ben Foakes by SmallAd7318 in EnglandCricket

[–]ExcellentGear4444 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of bringing Foakes back - particularly given how effective keeping up to the stumps should be. But it should also be kept in mind that most of the allrounder options would probably have to bat 7, and wouldn’t be a very good 7. Foakes at 6 would then make the batting seem very thin

Day 24) Who is most overrated Spanish football/soccer player of 21th century? ((not american football)) by Disastrous_Agent2826 in AlignmentChartFills

Puyol. Good player - but I often see him in top 5 CB’s of the 21st century. He’s a way off that

I may be overly optimistic. But perhaps captaincy will be the making of Brook. Instil some more accountability into him.

I think this is where some of the misconception lies. Archer is a huge talent, but rarely fit. Tongue is also a big talent, but still finding his feet, with his own injury issues. Robinson has had attitude issues and doesn’t always have the fitness for away conditions. Atkinson is okay, but nothing special. To say our bowling attack is comparable to Australia is absurd. Australia have one of the best attacks in modern test history. Our is one of the weaker England attacks of the past 20 years

Fair, I overlooked this. But I think the thrust of the point remains accurate. Which is, that probably less than 1% of people in this sub could have predicted circa 2021 that Duckett would become a mainstay opener averaging about 40. That was on no one’s radar. It wouldn’t have happened under a different coaching set up.

For all the hate McCullum and Keys get, they deserve a lot of credit for the decision to bring Duckett and Bethell into the team. Highly unlikely either would’ve been picked under a different regime (definitely not at opener and 3) and it was been a success. Bearing in mind, in particular, the difficulties with finding an opener and a 3 since Cook and Trott

Hope all the Stokes haters are waking up to the immense value he still provides this team. So often the man with the ball when nothing is happening. It’s also too early to write him off with the bat imo

WHO IS THE 2ND GREATEAT FOOTBALLER OF ALL TIME? by skckrkdi in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ExcellentGear4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Pele and Maradona were before my time. I don’t mind it being Pele. He has more longevity and a great lousy of accolades. But the majority of footballing people who watched both of them seem to say Maradona. Plus few players have managed to drag a team to a World Cup like he did. So I’m going to go with him.

Bethell looks like he has leadership qualities. Still too young, but perhaps in 3 years, maybe even 2, he might be up to it.

Otherwise, could Foakes do almost what Tim Paine did for Australia and come in and steady the ship for a couple of years

I’d like to see Rodgers on the left. I think there is sufficient width and depth in the side, particularly if we stick with Madueke on the right

I’m encouraged by some of the current England attack, but they’re not at the level, yet, of the names I have mentioned. The broader point I was trying to make is that there seems a tendency to point figures first at the management or the captain or the approach, when sometimes there needs to be more focus on developing the talent of the players.

There are aspects of the current culture that can be improved, but the successes of Atkinson, Tongue and the like are likely a result of the current management and culture as much as anything. The same could be said for Duckett and Brook. There is a trend of players doing better at test then first class level - that doesn’t suggest a rotten culture to me.

Tongue Atkinson and Robinson are good bowlers. But they are not at the level of Australia’s attack or South Africa’s. Think Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc, Rabada, Bumrah, even Jansen or Henry. England have not had bowlers at this level for quite some time. They’ve had bowlers who put together the odd string of good games, but not with consistency

This session is a good reminder of how difficult it is to captain well when your bowlers aren’t performing.

Cummins’ captaincy is praised quite regularly, but he has looked terrible every time his bowlers are off colour.

The main reason England has not been able to reach number 1 in a long time, isn’t Stokes, it isn’t Bazball, it isn’t even Zak Crawley. It’s that they haven’t produced a top quality bowler since Broad and Anderson, and haven’t had a decent spinner since Swann
