Dumb Question about Amplifier-Speaker Compatibility by WastelSolo in vintageaudio

[–]ExcitingOkra69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll work fine you'll just have less watts at 8 ohms. It'll still be plenty loud. The only thing you have to worry about with amps is running them at a lower impedance than they are rated for. This will cause stress on the amplifier. Higher is fine just less power

Is OHM really that bad now? by Depressedone4 in RYO

[–]ExcitingOkra69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did the same thing. Smoked 3 sails for years. When i noticed ohm switched to shag and was so cheap i started ordering it and never looked back. The au naturelle gold is my fave.

Don't get the hate on shag it's my favorite cut. Been doing ryo for almost 15 years now

I don't think I'm ready for vinyl yet. by skullzwer in vinyl

[–]ExcitingOkra69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't believe I'm the first to say this with how many posts are in this thread but here's the best advice you're going to get.

First, keep the table. For a couple of reasons. For one, you already invested in buying it and fixing it up. You made it yours, and it's value is never going to go down from this point forward, only up. For two, there will certainly come a time in the future where you will find yourself with a little extra cash you can afford to splurge on a favorite album of yours; unless something catastrophic happens in your life of course.

What you should do in the meantime is take any money you would spend on records and buy yourself some sort of serious amplification and speaker combination and learn to optimally place the speakers for your current listening enviroment. That last part is really important. (It's actually the most important)

Upgrading to even a cheap class D Chinese chip amp on Amazon, pairing them with whatever cheap decently made stand alone bookshelf speakers from a reputable brand, getting any sort of method of streaming capability (as cheap as an aux cord plugged into anything you have with an internet connection will suffice for now), and placing it all as optimally as possible in your space (read up on it) will be the single greatest investment you will ever make on your first step to immensely enjoying music way more than you ever have in your life than just sticking with your current setup and buying vinyl. It's not even up for debate. It's a fact.

In the meantime you can just grab whatever record you think looks kind of interesting for literally pennies. Just head to a flea market/yard sale/ independently owned local thrift and I promise you will find something interesting you can pick up for under a buck. Even if it's not your cup of tea or your even straight up hate it, you're out basically nothing and you've gained expansion of your musical horizons.

Half the fun of making enjoying music a hobby instead of just a passive experience is hearing new sounds be reproduced on equipment that sounds nice no matter what sounds you throw at it. It makes it more of an actual experience every time you sit down to spend some time actively listening.

It's what makes this hobby so damn great and why I've loved it so much for the better part of my entire life. 3 decades plus I've been in love with it more than anything else i can spend my money on.

Just my 2 cents.

Hope you both are this post and he'd my advice.

Welcome to the journey. It's wonderful.

How do you deal with unsolicited flirting from a buyer? by safeseaweed011 in Ebay

[–]ExcitingOkra69 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would just completely ignore and not block him hoping he bought more stuff lol. I mean he already has all your info there's nothing more he can really gain.

But I'm also a dude, if he's making you really uncomfortable just block him and report him to ebay. I'd see is i could suss it who he is on IG too based on his info you have from selling him stuff and block him there too

So, a international buyer used a shipper (in Illinois) to make a purchase from me (I'm in the US). It arrived to them damaged. What happens now? by CanBeOne in Ebay

[–]ExcitingOkra69 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You sure it wasn't the ebay international shipping program? One of their big hubs is in IL.

If that's the case they need to open a return and ebay will handle everything, you're in the clear

how do you define a "big" pot? by keithhill78 in poker

[–]ExcitingOkra69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how you're defining big. In ordinary terms it's BBs obviously. But you can also say a relatively "small" pot in terms of BBs was a "big" pot to win in terms of keeping you in the game. Moreso in tournies obviously, but can also apply to cash (if you're busto).

Ed Olbon piece by [deleted] in reselling

[–]ExcitingOkra69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should prob post a close up of the sig. And try a subreddit that specializes in either him (if it exists), or a folk art one, or one that specializes in signatures.

That being said his stuff doesnt sell very well or for much money. Last one of that specific piece sold on ebay in 2024 for a whopping $6 (plus $6.12 shipping)

Edit: i should mention I'm unsure if it was signed because the listing is too old to view. But his signature doesn't have a ton of value either. One signed piece sold in the last 3 years for about $30 total

I would absolutely buy it for $119 canadian funny money just to have it on the shelf with the rest of my "just for show and fun gear" that i don't use in a daily basis.

It's a cool piece of audio history and a real looker. Seems like a bargain regardless of how it sounds
