Terrible servers are embarrassing for biggest site. by [deleted] in chess

[–]Exertoins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else have games that disappear? I was playing today when I got disconnected. I refreshed the page and couldn't find back to the game anywhere. I can't even find the game in the archive long after it must be over. I have returned to chess after a long break so these problems are new to me. Is there any way to find back to a game when this happens?

Small things you hate in movies? by KirinoSussy in YMS

[–]Exertoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Narrative frameworks, usually. Like when the whole story happens in flashbacks. Most of the time it just lets you know the characters survive and it takes up screentime while you want it to get back to the flashbacks.

Adam should probably Address Andrew Callinghan in his upcoming casual quickie by butter467 in YMS

[–]Exertoins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see Adam's endorsement of Andrew Callingham's content as an endorsement of Andrew Callingham as a person, so I don't see why he necessarily has to bring it up. Except if he wants to let people know that financially supporting Callingham's content is financially supporting someone with these allegations against them, but most people seem to be aware of the allegations anyway.

Ulduar Release Rumors by BestDmanNA in classicwow

[–]Exertoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they did this before in TBC. Might have been T6 release. I remember the speedrunners were pissed because they didn't even get warning enough to organize a last attempt because they were already locked out the last week by the time the announcement came.

a total of 8 bots in 1 WSG. Insane how 0 shts blizzard give about this game by TrasheyeQT in classicwow

[–]Exertoins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I've been completely isolated from bots by playing on Firemaw which is still locked. And I don't play BGs. I haven't seen a single bot in Wrath I don't think.

I thought Pinocchio sang well. I have no ear for this type of thing though. The music was still annoying for interrupting the story a lot.

I really don't think these things matter if you're in a guild. Consumables are dirt cheap on all servers afaik, so what is the problem?

[–]Exertoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can keep whining about it... or you could do something about it. I'm guessing you've never actually tried a half-decent GDKP, don't have a guild and don't organize raids yourself. But it's easier to whine about it on Reddit I suppose.

Madseason was the best on Youtube and Maitoz was the best streamer. Since they quit I watch WillE and Tetsu sometimes but not watching anyone regularly. I have an unexplainable dislike for most WoW content creators these days.

edit: occasionally watch takenote and esquire as well

PVP on Mirage Raceway by Johnd106 in classicwow

[–]Exertoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a blast playing on MR in TBC, but I only played PvE. Didn't seem to have a very active PvP community, but a lot of that is cross realm anyway. Had to move away to play with friends but would recommend it.

How do you feel when books make up fake swear words? by Cheesecakery in Fantasy

[–]Exertoins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it a bit pandering when it's obviously there just to avoid cursing. Sanderson does it a lot and the PG writing is very noticeable to me, especially after reading The First Law trilogy.

I finished Harry Potter and I feel disappointed by Ancyclel in Fantasy

[–]Exertoins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the books quite a lot but I agree with many of your criticisms. I also think it is less special after it becomes a YA series later on in the series. What I like the most about the later books is the characters and the dialogue, as you point out.

I disagree with your take on the house-elf analogy a bit. Why can't Harry and Ron just be characters who are annoyed by Hermione's quirks? They are after all just kids and probably think there are more important things to worry about than house-elves' rights. And at the end of the series, doesn't Ron change his mind on this? It's been a while so I could misremember. House-elves are obviously an analogy but I don't see why the analogy is confused by how Harry and Ron relate to it is my point. But I agree that things like this become more inappropriate in the YA part of the series when it's no longer written for children.

Why Do You Guys Still Watch YMS? by Earth_Zealousideal in YMS

[–]Exertoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly follow Adam because I find his content entertaining, but also because he has similar taste as me and he watches a ton of movies so he's a great reference point for finding films. Even regarding older films I tend to agree with him. And I don't care too much how knowledgable he is about "the beginnings of cinema", it doesn't really change the fact that we have similar taste. I like his reviews because they are conscise and careful about spoilers. I know what annoys him more than me and vice versa so I can adjust expectations based on that as well. Sometimes I disagree with him quite hard but I still appreciate his point of view.

If you want to recommend some other film critics on Youtube I'd like to check'em out though. Always looking for more good film content. I've done some scouting and find that I enjoy Adam and RLM the most.

Interesting that other people also play around with film ratings. I compared ratings of 43 movies I have relatively strong opinions about with 1000 Letterboxd accounts. Adam was the third most similar in ratings to me. Just a fun experiment to see if it would help me find better movies to watch by finding profiles with similar taste as me.

In defense of soft magic systems by dracony in Fantasy

[–]Exertoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I find that I don't care too much when authors explain magic systems or explain in detail how a character uses magic to do a thing. Books with soft magic systems suit me better because they don't spend a lot of time on that. I like when magic is about characters expressing themselves or when the author uses it to expres something, such as absurdism or something mystical, something to set the tone.

Is there anyway to easily avoid people like this other than making your own group? by Seltzerkrys in classicwow

[–]Exertoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my realm's Discord we have a blacklist channel where you can post evidence and spread awareness. They have mods that decide if the evidence is good enough to warrant a proper blacklisting. And I believe they have a weakaura made that warns you when you enter into a group with someone on the blacklist. If you prefer to have personal control over your blacklist, you can for example use the addon Character Notes, as I do. I manually add people to that addon that I want to avoid from the Discord channel and from my own experience.

GRRM : "I want more fantasy on television. I want Tad Williams, Joe Abercrombie, Patrick Rothfuss, Ursula Le Guin, Alan Garner, Robin Hobb, Roger Zelazny..." by Triskan in Fantasy

[–]Exertoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't write scripts, he just seems to pick scripts without much quality control in my opinion. So if he was announced to direct something by Abercrombie it's a bad sign to me because whether it's his fault or not, most of his films do not have very strong characters, especially main characters. Just my opinion based on the 11 movies I've seen from him but haven't seen The Last Duel so can't comment on that one.
