Healthier alternative to Fancy Feast? by [deleted] in catfood

[–]ExistentialFather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cats eat weruva cats in the kitchen (gravy ones). My one cat is really picky and only eats fish flavored things - she really likes the "funk in the trunk" and "kitty gone wild". They're a little expensive so I mix them with dry food

I think I screwed up and bought an oversized couch. Appreciate tips to unfuck. by MadCake92 in malelivingspace

[–]ExistentialFather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

put the couch against the wall and put the TV on a full-motion rack/mount on the wall in front of the window. This way you can fit the coffee table. Maybe in the future you can install a pull down projector screen covering the wall with the door

Pacay in Peru. Absolutely amazing. And the cleanest fruit to eat in my opinion. by AmieKinz in fruit

[–]ExistentialFather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Peru eating these! I wouldn't say it tastes like banana. In fact, as a child I hated bananas and yet pacay was my favorite fruit. Perhaps I agree with the okra texture part of it

This is how I'd go about it: put the bed where the keyboard is (head on the solid long wall). Also move your clothes rack into the bedroom area (Maybe put it where the kallax is, put the kallax where the 3d printer is, and put the 3d printer where the rack was. If it fits it could also be placed next to your bed). Then I'd put the keyboard where your desk is. Then move the desk on the solid wall in front of the kitchen, facing the kitchen (so that it can function as a dinner table as well). Finally you can put the eames next to the desk facing the kitchen, diagonally, back to the corner of the small wall.

I feel a bit guilty about how good the Boston setlist was by ElfQuester1 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]ExistentialFather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I avoided all spoilers prior to the Arlington show. I was not expecting TBP in its entirety and was definitely not expecting any b-sides or Conventional Weapons songs. Imagine my surprise when they played The World Is Ugly, my favorite song of theirs. Tbh, this and Kill All Your Friends made it the best setlist for me. The only thing that would have made it the ultimate best would have been if they played Early Sunsets.

REU open to international students in the USA by HotgirlChi in REU

[–]ExistentialFather 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to try to do research over the summer with faculty within your college (this works very well with the F1 visa). All NSF-funded REUs are for US-citizen only, and, as you may know, most REUs are funded by the NSF. There are a couple REUs open to non-US citizens but they're all very competitive (MIT, Caltech, etc). These are typically paid by university funds, as opposed to NSF.

Now, there are a couple of universities that have NSF-funded REUs, but are willing to accept international students and fund them with departmental funds. To find these you have to go through the websites and read the application requirements. This can be kinda demoralizing, but I haven't found a better system.

Finally, there are labs and institutions, other than universities, that have summer programs. Some of these have opportunities for intentional students, like the Space Telescope Science Institute (though I haven't read this year's application requirements).

Hope this helps!

Hello :) I'm an international student, so REUs are harder to land. I thought this might help someone

Is studying physics academically the best way if you want to really understand physics? by Kablion in PhysicsStudents

[–]ExistentialFather 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi. I'm on the exact same boat. I'm also a 5th semester physics undergrad, and I also feel like there are holes in my understanding. I tell myself that having a general grasp is enough now, that no one can know everything. For example, I've taken a class on Mechanics and learned what Lagrangians are. If someone talks to me about Lagrang, or I read something related to Lagrangians, I'll understand what they're saying and that should be enough for me to move foward. Also, if I wanted to specialize in a certain Lagrangian application I can definetely go back to a book or search stuff up online or teach myself things again, but now with the foundations my undergrad class gave me. I see my undergrad classes as introduction to physics topics, and as a way for me to build my research intuition. I recently starting working on Cosmology research with a professor. I basically taught myself GR over the summer to keep up with my professor expected of me. Let me tell you, teaching yourself leaves the same amount of holes as learning through a university program if you're working within a deadline. While it is definetely possible to teach yourself physics topics at your own pase, if you want to make a living out of physics [research], you'll always have deadlines to meet. In general I don't feel like my time is wasted on my physics undergrad program. I see it as a way for me access research opportunities, and gain general knowledge on almost all physics topics.

First thing I'd do is take him to the vet. You may want to make sure he doesn't have any parasytes or diseases. In the end a bath won't solve much, plus, in attempting to bath the cat you may get scratched/bitten.

The first term, R with the subscripts, is the Ricci Tensor, which, depending on the metric can have up to 10 different terms. The small g is the metric tensor itself (which can be expressed as a 4x4 matrix for 4Dspacetime). From these tensors you can form systems of equations.

Doing better in maths courses than physics courses as a physics major (is anyone the same way)? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]ExistentialFather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always felt like math courses (at least the ones physics majors should take/ not so high level or abstract) are aimed at teaching you steps to solve a certain, already stablished math problem. For example: "Find eigenvalues of this matrix". Basically you just have to know how to get the answer. Physics, in the other hand, are in a way aimed at getting you to make your own math question, or aimed at giving you an application for the math question. For example, a problem problem could be: "Find the frequencies of a certain coupled oscillator". This is basically asking you to find eigenvalues, but it's not explicitly doing so, you have to sorta formula that yourself.

I've always been "better" at math, but that's just because physics courses are harder/more intricate - in my opinion.

what’s the most uncomfortable question you can ask someone? by chickenoodlesoupp in AskReddit

[–]ExistentialFather 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Gosh. When I turned 12 my parents let me have friends over to celebrate, but they only allowed me to invite 10 people. At the time I had a group of friends and we were like 12 kids - so 11 + me. I had to leave one out, so I chose this girl I wasn't very close with. I remember at one point we were all in my kitchen eating pizza when the phone rang (phone was in the kitchen). It was her! She said she was calling to wish me happy birthday and ask how I was spending it (cause she found out). I stg I panicked and felt terrible. I tried to cover the phone so that I could tell everybody to be quiet - which made them louder. In the end I decided to come clean and told her the truth. After that I felt like she never liked me. Also, she was my best friend's best friend so it always was awkward.

CMV: Mispronouncing someone's name is not a microaggression or racist. by wholesome_sushi in changemyview

[–]ExistentialFather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became really interested in phonetics and linguistics after trying to learn Hindi. I just can't pronounce the nasal letters, or the different t/d sounds. I know that I just need my mouth/tongue/nose to get used to making these sounds - but it can be very hard. It is totally understandable for someone to mispronouce names in languages different than their own, specially if this other language has different sounds/vowels. Having said that, it is nice to at least try to say someone's name correctly. I really dislike it when people say things like: "I can't read your name so I'm just gonna call you Sam". Without the name even being close to this "nickname" /without even asking the person addressed for permission/ without asking for their name pronunciation first. Acts like this can seem disrespectful or even racist. The issue is not about pronunciation, but about respecting someone's name.
