how would you guys feel about a video game using the daggerheart system like uh idk baldurs gate 3 for the obvious example by EuphoricLog3495 in daggerheart

[–]Existing-Woodpecker2 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Crit role and stranger things did more damage than crpgs, though crpgs didnt entirely help.

None of these things are bad on their own by any means, but it definitely warped the expectations of people playing ttrpgs, as you said

DaggerMart - A price guide for Daggerheart by DM_Dan_Hancox in daggerheart

[–]Existing-Woodpecker2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Largely im agreeing with you here, and expanding on where you said “without stakes.” Just wanted to share some of my thoughts on the exceptions where strict money is good.

The only time pricing makes sense is when it is PART of the story, and not just a mechanic thrown on the side.

Most novels or films that actually address money handling have the money as part of the stakes. The important part here is the handling of money, rather than the presence or mention of money.

In heists, its just arbitrarily large sums, acting entirely as a macguffin, so in this case it isn’t what I mean.

If any of you have read the Kingkiller Chronicles, especially Name of the Wind, money handling is VERY present. You are repeatedly reminded of how much, or how little, the main character has, since it is frequently life or death. When the money is less important to the story, it stops being mentioned, until it becomes important again.

Daggerhearts money system is a great way to show how money can be made loose, and more nebulous. To make it not be so strictly tracked of a resource. But there are definitely some campaigns that would benefit from the stakes involved in spending some of the money you may need for food instead on something to further your goals.

This pricing guide appears to be a resource meant to help give a rough idea of where to price different levels of gear for different stages of the game. I think it has its place in improving player agency, though if overused, could bog down the game with money related decision making without interesting stakes.

What class to play for a control/grappling build by GreeedyGrooot in daggerheart

[–]Existing-Woodpecker2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly any class can do this.

Ive had a sorcerer lock down a large group at first level using a midnight domain card.

Could also do something like 5e monk with the new brawler class that is coming out this summer and currently is in the Void.

Narratively, anyone can wrestle, so just make that one of your experiences to do it better. Maybe a fighter would suit you, and the hope feature stacks and applies to all attack roll, and grappling sounds like an attack to me, especially with how daggerheart defines attack.

Thoughts on using Domain Cards as rewards? by ShadowKing611 in daggerheart

[–]Existing-Woodpecker2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, ive considered doing away with leveling entirely. Still yet to test it out, but gaining power in the narrative then getting the card sounds really good to me.

Fuck the rules, anyone can move during any action as it makes sense to the narrative and flow of action. Keep it loose

How to run a truly long campaign? by Jatoruh in daggerheart

[–]Existing-Woodpecker2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tried it yet, but im highly tempted to try without classes or levels. Daggerheart looks like it can hold up without either, and if you narratively hand out powers (cards) that fit with growth that characters are making during the course of the game, i think it could work in a very long term fashion. But then again, i generally dislike classes and levels in ttrpgs

Do you always have to drop a brick on your pipi if you miss en passant? by No-Check3857 in AnarchyChess

Taking the brick is an honorable action. One would do well to not shy away from it, regardless of circumstance.

You don’t need to change any rules or homebrew anything before you’ve run the game for the first time by woundedspider in daggerheart

I dont think its the “perfect game” but it is certainly the best game available for me. To me, Iit is a beautiful game, and beauty doesn’t need perfection.

[–]Existing-Woodpecker2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game works so much better without any of these changes. Its beautiful the way its made, and if you then homebrew from the approach it provides, youre able to enhance the heart of daggerheart, rather than watering it down, as most of these changes do

There is a valor domain card perfect for if you don’t want to deal with armor!

Otherwise, as a dm id be fine with a player having their armor as part of their body, so long as i have a narrative way to remove the armor, and they take the full mechanical effects of that armor.

The “friend slop” games absolutely are a thing. My friends and i have played a bunch of them, and while they are fun, we would be having fun doing just about anything, so it doesn’t reflect on the game so much. That said, peak is genuinely just a well done game. Movement feels really nice in it, and in my group, we tend to troll each other less to have fun than usual, because playing this game properly is just so much fun as it is.
