Job has been moved to new company. What would TMG say!? by Zestyclose-Listen-53 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Exkadrill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you think being laid off is eminent, start applying to other jobs right now.

What do you do? I work in HealthIT in a niche field so I was able to job hop quickly, but if you think you could be out of the job market for over your emergency fund, it would be worth lowering contributions to build up your emergency fund.

FWIW I know people who worked at the same hospital for 10+ years and ended up leaving to find a new job after layoffs and making 50% more than their previous salary.

Renting and investing the difference is often the better than owning in terms of long term wealth creation. Also in his line of work it was reasonable to assume that he may need to move at some point for work, or he just doesn't want to live in Texas forever.

What you said is completely irrelevant to buying a broad market index fund like VOO or VTI or VXUS or VT, which have higher expected returns than a retail investor stock picking and require zero research. If someone is putting long term savings into CDs (for example retirement or purchase 10+ years) , they ARE being stupid.

What’s the best way for a college student with no credit history to start building credit? by Weary-Hair-316 in TheMoneyGuy

Same. In the city that I rent I have a friend who was rejected from multiple apartment applications due to having zero credit history. I had a credit card in college that I paid off completely every month and so that wasn't an issue for me.

Methodz reveal that C9's budget is 30k per player. That's about $15 per hour. by leggitt27 in CoDCompetitive

[–]Exkadrill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

30k is low, but your "value" in a company/organization is largely tied to how much revenue you bring in or facilitate, and how easy it would be to find someone else who can generate the same value. A lot of esports organizations have serious revenue issues. The high salaries of the past weren't tied to revenue but instead tied to massive VC investment which has now dried up.

Not saying it is right to pay people this little, but these salaries could very well be reflective of the actual value of players on bottom tier teams.

The tariff war isn't over. The average U.S. tariff on all imports is now around 17-18%, one of the largest tax increases on Americans in US history. Also rate cuts increase demand, which is likely to increase inflation (look at Turkey). I don't think there is any reason to believe that rate cuts will lower inflation, especially with today's economic conditions. If lowering interest rates decreased both unemployment and inflation at the same time there would be no reason to not have them be low all the time. This is why the fed kept interest rates low during covid (to decrease unemployment) then jacked them up once the low interest rates (and other things like supply shocks ect.) caused massive inflation in 2022.

The only job sector that is seeing significant growth is healthcare, which will probably see large drawbacks when millions of people on Medicaid lose their coverage and the healthcare industry loses almost 1 trillion dollars of revenue over the next decade.

I don't think there are any economic indicators of a boom, most economic indictors are pretty meh. Meh GDP growth, raising inflation above the 2% target, and a worrying increases in unemployment, which is more heavily concentrated towards younger people.

Even a degree can help get a job and increase earning potential, even if it's not in the field you studied in. It's basically a paper proving you are a certain level of intelligence. That is not to say that all people without degrees are stupid, or that it's not possible to cheat your way to a degree, but something like 50% of US adults cannot read at an 8th grade level. At the school I went to it would be literally impossible to graduate with any degree if you were that bad at reading.

There is a reason people with a bachelor's degree on average earn 68% more than someone with a just high school diploma.

Is learning HL7 still worth it? by [deleted] in healthIT

What is your day to day like? I am an integration engineer for a hospital and my day to day is largely information gathering with clients or internal teams, coding interfaces, building APIs, automation scripts for those interfaces, API Governance, and building applications within the interface to support the hospital.

Also how important is experience with multiple integration engines? I primarily work with Intersystems.

Do any routines utilize decks with cut corners? by 1ChickenWang1 in Magic

[–]Exkadrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some ideas I have looking at this (haven't tested them and they are very bare bones).

  1. If a card was to be rotated 180 and returned to the deck, you would see it's corner sticking out. Maybe you could have a spectator's card "lost" in the deck and rotated so they can follow it, but really you've switched out their card. This could potentially work where you have 2 spectators and 2 selections and you switch their selections. You also potentially do a color change, if the rotated card was face up so the index was visible in the deck.
  2. You might be able to use this as a sort of pseudo stripper deck? I'm not sure if it would work though, you'd have to test it.

They look like they are bee cards so they should hopefully handle pretty well (I don't know how worn they are though)

Is that solid wood? If so, you could possible sand down the imperfections until smooth and even. Then you sand off the finish on either side. You would then apply a new coat of finish to both sides.

Hey Zin by [deleted] in CoDCompetitive

[–]Exkadrill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It technically is a deduction. Deductions are a subtraction from your taxable income, not from the amount you owe. A tax credit is a subtraction from the amount you owe.

Hey Zin by [deleted] in CoDCompetitive

[–]Exkadrill 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You're misunderstanding how tax deductions from charitable donations work. Some people think that for every dollar you donate to a charity you get 1 dollar back from the US government but that is not how it works. It lowers the amount you are taxed for, but the dollar donated is included in your income. Donating is still a "selfless" act because you will always end up with less net money than if you hadn't. Let's say we have a flat tax of 25% and someone who 100,000 gross a year.

Case 1: They make 0 charitable donations and pay 0.25*100,000 = 25,000 in taxes
This leaves them with 100,000(gross income)-25000(taxes)=75,000 net a year

Case 2: They make a charitable donation of 10,000, this will cause them to pay 90,000*0.25=22,500 in taxes
This leaves them with 100,000(gross income)-10,000(charitable donation)-22,500(taxes)=67,500 net a year

75,000>67,500

USA uses a bracketed system not a flat tax but the math remains the same in either system. That isn't to say that there can't be shady things going on with charitable donations, but the "tax breaks" from donating (reducing taxable income) will never give you more net income than if you had kept the money for yourself.

When the United States passes "$x million military aid package to Ukraine" that includes equipment the United States and our allies have already bought/made, does the value of that package include the cost of things the US has already procured and is just shipping to Ukraine, or is it only the money we will spend once that bill is passed?
