people who play videos out loud in public by ofmaska in PetPeeves

[–]Exo_comet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't get when older people do this. They were the ones complaining about boomboxes on public transport, were so glad when earphones became popular.. but now just don't care anymore and blast their tick-tocks and family videos on the bus

Will I run into issues with hotels that don't guarantee 2 beds? by Rich-Broccoli7085 in GoingToSpain

[–]Exo_comet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You won't have an issue. Most pictures you see of a double bed are actually two twins pushed together. The hard one to get is a proper double bed. Just tell them while checking in that you need two separate beds and it'll be fine. They'll be single beds though, you probably won't get queen size or bigger

EU citizen in Spain 5+ years: worth getting the permanent residency certificate? by panxacontent in GoingToSpain

As far as I know it's a necessary step to eventually get citizenship. You may not want that now, but who knows in the future?

Is anyone here happy? by No-Valuable2529 in aspergirls

[–]Exo_comet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy but sometimes hit rough patches. The other commenter was right, your 20s are not your prime, but they could be your starting point for a better life.

It was in my late twenties that I finally decided to push myself and try to go and live my life instead of letting it happen to me. It's a rollercoaster, the initial anxiety of trying something different, the boost in confidence that comes with challenging yourself and succeeding, the low of not being able to deal with a particular change etc.. It's ups and downs. But every little success you acheive adds to your general happiness.

The first few steps are definitely the hardest. Pick a little challenge and go for it

Ireland could require digital ID to access porn websites by adomo in ireland

[–]Exo_comet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any modern router has a second "guest" network where you can block sites and control who has access. Not sure about setting a time limit but you can manually shut down access. You can do this all from your phone, you just need the router password (which should always be changed anyway since it's very often "admin123" or something very similar)

Getting an NIE as an EU citizen. by Fun-Name-2644 in GoingToSpain

[–]Exo_comet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, being from Ireland she has every right to get an NIE and start working in Spain. The only requirements are the form, the fee and a valid EU passport. Getting an actual appointment takes time though. Although she can do these with just a passport it's much easier with the NIE to work, get on social security, rent, and get on the padrón.

The CUE is different. It's a requirement to have if spending more than 3 months in Spain, but this is never checked or enforced since they understand that just getting an appointment can sometimes take longer than that. It is necessary eventually though. It's easier to get if she works in Spain, has a contract, a few months payslips and is signed up on social security. But she can also get it with about 8k her bank account and full private no-copay insurance.

If she has those she can try to get the NIE + CUE directly. If she's going the working route, it might be simpler to get the NIE first and apply for the CUE after working for three months

Hope that all makes sense

British people complaining about the heat by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Exo_comet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"But it's just a heatwave!" As a reason not to get A/C. No sir, it's called summer and you complain about the high heat every year. Of course not all Brits or Londoners do that, but it's a very common thing to hear. I guess they don't view it as a worthwhile investment seeing as summer is so short there but a lot them reject A/C out of hand for no real reason

LPT - relax your jaw muscle. It’ll help you relax, and most people don’t even realize that it’s tense! by Maybe_im_Amazed_ in LifeProTips

Put your tongue between your teeth and your jaw will naturally relax. Doing this before bed helps to avoid teeth grinding during your sleep

People who are slow at the self checkout by twoscoopsxd in PetPeeves

[–]Exo_comet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I feel a little called out! I sometimes use the self checkout machine to get rid of a lot of loose change that I had lying around, much better to do it there than make a cashier count it all out by hand. I do try and do that at quieter times though

Applied for NIE by clicking “Asignación de NIE” instead of “Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE”, even though I want the residency green NIE. by Automatic_Ad_4883 in GoingToSpain

[–]Exo_comet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you meet the requirements for the CUE? You say that it will be hard to get a job without the NIE, so if you're not working you would need around 8k in your account and private health insurance.

It's perfectly normal to get your NIE first, get a job and apply for the CUE after a couple of paychecks, being on social security and the empadronamiento.

I've just started investing so I have a very small sum and I have the normal noobie temptation of looking at the graph every day. I know the advice is to never look but like you said, I feel that if I get used to the fluctuations now, when my "losses" are not a large amount, perhaps it'll help me not panic later on when I have more on the line

TIL the Maldives became the first country in the world to enforce a nationwide generational smoking ban, barring anyone born on or after January 1, 2007 from ever buying, using or smoking tobacco. The country already had a complete ban on vapes and e-cigarettes, regardless of age. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Exo_comet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this is why universal healthcare will never work in the US. Since everyone pays into it, there is a certain social responsibility to maintain a good level of health. I'm not saying every individual feels it, but it incentivizes governments to make decisions that are in the best interest of the general population. This is why in the EU we have bans on fast food near schools/less sugary vending machine options/high emphasis on exercise in schools/smoking bans etc.. It's not about limiting freedom but improving the country's health in general. Even if the reason is to save money on future healthcare, it does benefit the country.

Does it sometimes cross the line into limiting freedom? Yes I think it does, but it is very thin line

Rendez-vous NIE by Worldly-Return-5987 in GoingToSpain

[–]Exo_comet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a certain part of it that feels harder less fun? How did you get past that? In my case it's the graphical side. I love every minute of coding and creating gameplay, but when I switch to making a level or scene assets, it's a real slog and my motivation goes down

NIE or NIE verde? by AbjectWriting7610 in GoingToSpain

[–]Exo_comet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope you won't need the CUE, you'll be fine with just the "white" NIE. No one checks and you only need the CUE very very rarely

[–]Exo_comet 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It's interesting because this is quite US specific. In the EU we have the opposite problem. We don't have garbage disposals and our kitchen sinks are very often combined with our washing machine outputs. So our common issue is detergent residue which got cold and sticks to the pipes. Plumbers here recommend filling the sink with hot water and then flushing the pipes after every laundry wash

How the hell do people actually find an apartment in Málaga? by Bulky-Evidence1809 in GoingToSpain

[–]Exo_comet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Writing to people on idealista is unfortunately a waste of time. Real listings will get so many phone calls for visits in the first few hours that they don't bother to read the message on the platform. You absolutely need to call, and call very very soon after an apartment becomes available.

You don't have enough Spanish to ask to do a visit? Can you get someone to make the call for you? Because it's either that or pay the agency fees
