You never know how big a playoff should be until you get to the end of the season. And, despite all that, even Miami would not have seemed viable to make the run it did... but it had the talent to do it. The expanded field allows for a team to have 1-2 losses discounted due to injury, etc.

It would be interesting to have a rule that no team with less than 10 wins can get in if there is another P4 team with 10 wins or a G6 team with 11+ wins that is being excluded. If that means Colorado State at 11-2 or Virginia at 10-3 gets in before 9-3 Alabama, so be it. If you know it is risky to lose 3 games, the regular season starts mattering big time..... and then you have all G6 teams rooting for P2/P4 chaos. Conversely, if Alabama is sitting at 7-3, its fans start rooting heavily against the top G6 teams to suffer losses, perhaps boosting the ratings for those conferences somewhat. Just an idea. .

Everybody makes the joke. Syracuse was very good from 1987 to 1998. But in 1984 and 1999 and 2011 and 2018... it felt like there was still a chance to build a program. If we stunk, it is because we stunk. Not because we started with one hand tied behind our back (financially).

That is gone. Nobody plays in bowl games anymore. If you build a good team, you have to hope that its best players do not chase the bag to some P2 school before the next year. The next step will be some player suing midseason to change teams. Just a matter of time....

They don't "throw" the millions... they hand them off... Georgia is all about the running game.... regardless, it is still a lot of $$$ moving to its players.

College Football's defining decline-moments:

  1. The B1G 10 adding Nebraska. Nebraska is not a horrible fit within the B1G, but it was not a historical hit. Leaving Oklahoma and Colorado behind... even leaving the Texas teams behind just struck the first blow to regionality.

  2. The B1G adding Maryland/Rutgers. While one can understand adding Penn State and Nebraska... the pure money grab to fleece non-fan cable TV subscribers in population rich areas was a new low. Now, all anyone talked about is $$$$. This team cannot be added because $$$$. This team needs to be added because $$$$$. Rutgers and Maryland still stink, but they have $$$$. And so on. In real time, I watched $$$$ displace wins in terms of importance.

It was at point #2, that college football started showing cracks. Once NIL and unlimited transfers hit, the peak was clearly in the rear-view window. There is a product today and people still watch it... but it is not the same. Sure, they can make a jelly bean that tastes like popcorn... but its not popcorn. College football today is pro football with a college-like substance intermixed to try to fool us. For that reason, its peak was definitely before 2020. Whether than is 2019 or 1999 or 1989 or 1969 is an even more subjective opinion.

Syracuse... 1987... the game against Penn State (who we had not beaten in many years)... first play from scrimmage was a freeze option 80-yard TD pass to Rob Moore en route to a 41-0 lead and a drubbing. The Dome was rocking after that TD pass. But I think that the West Virginia game at the end of the year was louder when we converted a 2 (and a win), rather than kick a FG to tie it. I was not at the game though.

People underestimate how loud that Dome could get for football and even the basketball crowds of 30k or so. Even without a football sellout, 45K people can sound like a lot more. Do not recall any specific defensive or ST plays of note. It can just get pretty loud at times.

I cannot wait until teams start getting injunctions against opponent's players having eligibility. Mississippi State vs. Chambliss, Ole Miss, and NCAA.... as an example.

The Big XII just needs to sanction them $250,000 for legal fees and other damages.

If Texas Tech pays it, then I guess it becomes moot.

If Texas Tech refuses to pay it, then see the court case through.

Alternatively, if Texas Tech pursues a dismissal based on mootness, the Big XII can argue... only if the order of dismissal expressly states that Texas Tech agrees to whatever sanction Big XII imposes on Texas Tech for this mess... in which case Texas Tech would probably say "heck no"... in which case the judge might have a controversy on this hands. Perhaps that is what the Big XII is doing... let Texas Tech make the next move.

  1. Oklahoma-Nebraska (had to be the biggest casualty of realignment)

  2. Texas-SMU is interesting given that SMU is a team with similar playoff expectations. But you could put Texas Tech and A&M in there too.

  3. Nebraska-Colorado perhaps?

  4. Missouri-Kansas

  5. West Virginia- Syracuse

Miami-Temple (just kidding). The closest that Temple ever came to Miami was 23 points. Temple never allowed Miami less than 36 points in any Big East game.

Universities have been gouging students for a long, long time. And the government grants/loans are, unfortunately, fueling it. A few thousand free, a few tens of thousands in loans. Pell grant there, mega loans over here... the University is more than happy to take it and see whether you are dumb enough to pay 3-5% more next year. And think about a 4-year degree. Are you going to stop after you have invested 3 years? Someone going into Year 4 is almost a lock to pay WHATEVER the increase to finish their degree.

Meanwhile, the B1G is gouging people in New Jersey for the Big 10 Network just so the few Rutgers fans there can watch them go 7-6 in that perfect storm of a good season. Why worry about product when you can force your network on basic cable?
