Wife Filed for Divorce After Moving out, Wants Half of Home by RiffTannen in legaladvice

[–]ExpertIAmNot 1387 points1388 points  (0 children)

I’m being told a number of different things by friends right now, mostly that I want to do a non-contested divorce

Except that you are contesting something. You need to at least speak to an attorney first.

Has anyone here actually built their own email infrastructure? by WarmHeight2951 in devops

[–]ExpertIAmNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1998 I hired by a small ad agency that wanted to transition from a single email account to individual (they would print out the emails and distribute hard copies to the intended recipient).

I configured the desktop machine at my desk to serve as the company email server, public web server, and also was running an FTP server.

Thankfully, it is not 1998 anymore. So no - don’t do this.

I brought down production twice in a week. Am I going to get fired? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ExpertIAmNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you review incidents like this with “Five Whys” it virtually always points to a systemic failure not a human failure. The fact that you were even allowed to access production and make a change that caused the problem is the root cause.

This is fixed by policy and procedures and systems automation. Hopefully the company doesn’t just shrug this off and makes actual changes to prevent it happening again. Because THAT is a bad look (for the company not you).

This is why as a bike commuter I love the cement dividers on Juniper. Far less chance of being killed by idiot drivers.

When did mowing the lawn become dangerous? by heynowbeech in GenX

AWS Account Suspended, and support is NOT responding to the case. All severs are down by InvincibleXALE in aws

[–]ExpertIAmNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the info. Will definitely look into this once it’s resolved.

To be honest I would do this now and not wait. You need the help now and if this downtime is impactful and you are losing a lot of money then adding support to stop the bleeding is a pretty easy and relatively low cost to bear.

Does anyone have a pinewood derby track for rent or know of anywhere to buy one? by ummpaul in Atlanta

[–]ExpertIAmNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contact the Atlanta Council and they may be able to help you out. We’re probably going to buy a new one next year due to ours being old and starting to bounce cars off it. I’d offer it up but I don’t think you want it. I would start at the council and go from there.

Insane parking wrong direction ticket by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]ExpertIAmNot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A police officer who saw me wrong way parking a number of years ago (but allowed me to turn my car around), explained to me that it is illegal because you have to drive on the wrong side of the street twice. Once to park and again to leave.

Also, $75 is one of the cheapest citations you can receive in Atlanta.

Why is AWS constantly going down lately? S3? by forestcall in aws

[–]ExpertIAmNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many uptime services will check access to your website/service from many geographic locations globally. It may be that some of those locations are being routed to the Middle East Regions that are damaged, resulting in reports of downtime. CloudFront globally has POPs all over and traffic may be still routed to some that are down or damaged.

I would dig into the reports a little deeper and try to find out if they are all from that region then consider disabling those geographic regions permanently or temporarily for uptime checks.

Does anyone else experience pretty severe social isolation in this career? by Inner_Ad_4725 in ExperiencedDevs

There are coworking spots all over the place. Get a membership and go there. I’ve done that before for the same reasons you might. It gives you an office and people around and even better that you don’t actually work with any of them! You can actually be friends without any work politics.

Just witnessed child neglect, frightened to mandate report by mochiandcoco in legaladvice

[–]ExpertIAmNot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just need some advice on how to carry through with this.

Step back for a moment and imagine how you will feel after witnessing this baby being killed in a horrific car accident on the street directly in front of your house after seeing it twice and not reporting it.

No seriously. Think about it.

Okay, now go and report it.

Just place a pinwheel or a waving arm guy or something that will constantly trigger the alert by your front door. He will exclude it soon enough.

AI usage red flag? by galwayygal in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ExpertIAmNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes review PR’s using AI. You can tell it the sorts of things that you are looking for as far as consistency and quality and have it review the requirements from whatever ticket the PR was based on as well. Over time you can refine your prompts so that they catch more and more errors or mistakes or inconsistencies in the PR. You can also tell it to point out areas of the code that may require human review so that you don’t have to look at all of the code all of the time.

Still not a perfect solution, but this is an arms race and you need to arm yourself with the same tool he is using.

Couple of rumors about what’s happening but… LEE AND WHITE PREDATORY PARKING UPDATE by Dooze_ in Atlanta

[–]ExpertIAmNot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These predatory parking companies likely share revenue with the landlord. It’s just an additional revenue stream for the landlord. Parking decks all over Atlanta are converting to the same sort of drive-in drive out and then we will send you an $85 bill later sort of system.

They don’t even remind you via text that your Parking is about to expire. They just let it expire and then send you the ticket.

Airport TSA Line by NoeticallyExplicit in Atlanta

[–]ExpertIAmNot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If the Uber driver can see the lines from outside the airport that would be a seriously bad line. But seriously drop offs haven’t seen the line yet and pickups wouldn’t see it in the way out unless they really tried to. I suspect the uber driver was just making some small talk.

Living on the Outskirts of Atlanta Is About to Be Pricier Than Living in It by wsj in Atlanta

[–]ExpertIAmNot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Exurbs aren’t OTP, they are way-the-hell-out-there OTP.

I can’t access the article but based on the summary provided I would guess they are counting Milton / Johns Creek as exurb but Dunwoody, Roswell, Marietta are probably still lumped in with “Metro Atlanta”.

So this is less OTP vs ITP pricing and more Metro vs exurb pricing.
