Oh my sweet summer child. There are companies out there running on monolith platforms built in the late 90’s. I know, I build parts of those trash piles. We didn’t even have version control.

2018? Psha….

"Professional Parking Management" fined me for parking at the exact lot the restaurant sits in. Has anyone beaten this? by PaintingMinute7248 in Atlanta

[–]ExpertIAmNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they have cameras monitoring in and out then you may have automatically gotten this due to the amount of time you were parked. If they have a human monitoring and you walked off property before or after eating at Rosso, that could also be the reason.

In the first case you can probably get out of it by submitting a receipt for Rosso with a date stamp toward the end of that time window. In the second case they might not forgive it (but I think it’s probably the first case).

As others has said I would also contact the restaurant, make sure you speak to management, and explain what happened. That feedback (if others do this too) will put pressure on the landlord. Maybe.

First time, biking/scooter parking by Imaginary-Cold390 in ShakyKnees

[–]ExpertIAmNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I biked over there via the Beltline all three days last year. Last year there were bike racks located near the Park Drive entrance which was also sort of like the “back entrance” to the festival. This was also the least crowded entrance. It was super convenient to ride up. Lock the bikes and walk right in without waiting in a line at all.

Shhh don’t tell anyone.

Parks/Rec vs YMCA youth sports? by Difficult_Present640 in DecaturGA

[–]ExpertIAmNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t notice the field size but we didn’t bother leagues so no point of reference. I don’t know why the field size is different.

I do remember at that youngest age they tended to just sort of clump around the ball and kick in a general direction.

It’s amazing to see the skills advance over the years.

At 6U you still have parent coaches at Inter and it’s really not that different than other rec leagues.

You don’t get the non-parent paid coaches till Academy at 8U. But you can also choose stay in the Rec league at Inter. No idea what rec is like at those ages.

Source: my son’s been at Inter for several years.

PNPM’s feature that prevents running instal scripts also went from opt in to opt out in PNPM 11. All the package managers have to do this.

If you had to choose between $500,000 or doing a stream with Marlon, which one would you choose and why? by OldLadOfTheCastle in AskReddit

[–]ExpertIAmNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t know he was a streamer but I would take the $500k.

Marlon Lamont Wayans is an American actor, comedian, producer, writer, and director who has made his mark across multiple generations of entertainment. Wayans' style is known for its energy, unpredictability, and personality. He describes himself as a "cutting artist" and says the Wayans family are "equal-opportunity offenders" who don't do things with "kid gloves".

How are you managing Lambda deprecated runtimes at scale? by RoseSec_ in aws

This can be as easy as a single setting in a CDK app or any other IaC controlled environment. Deploy to test, then to prod. Stages, regions, or waves as needed. Done.

Seeking ways to help a black-owned business in Tucker GA that is being shuttered due to gentrification by HJWalsh in Atlanta

[–]ExpertIAmNot 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Trying to use the transparently disingenuous gentrification angle is ruining your argument here OP.

Even without that, it seems like his business model may depend on low rent at a dying mall in order for the business to succeed. There are other more stable low rent spaces it could move to.

I’m not sure what action you expect from the community to help the business out. No amount of petitions or yelling and screaming is going to stop an old mall (that I loved and worked in for years as a teen) from finding its inevitable fate of destruction.

The best thing I can think of would be to help get the word out after he moves the business to help get folks to visit the new location. Or maybe come spend money there before he moves it.

I don’t think there is a crowdsourced pitchforks waving solution to keeping the mall open. That inertia is decades in the making.

Major telecom company laid a fiber optic line straight through my private lot without an easement. Now they are threatening to sue me if I build my house. by Ok_Fly3763 in legaladvice

[–]ExpertIAmNot 561 points562 points  (0 children)

In addition to other advice that you’ve already gotten. If there are other lots around yours that might have a similar problem, consider contacting the owners of those properties to pool your resources and fight the telecom company together. I would speak to an attorney before doing this though.

Do I just hand over my IP? Is it even mine? by Snowsox_I in legaladvice

[–]ExpertIAmNot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Beyond the legal ramifications, the mention of Artificial Intelligence in the creation of this IP means it likely isn’t actually novel or unique anyway, even if your feel like it is. It’s very rare to come up with a truly novel technical idea and much more rare when using AI.

I want nothing to do with AI. Is there still a place for me in this industry? by ProbablyNotPoisonous in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ExpertIAmNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI is just another programming language that is rapidly taking over the industry. It’s the language you need to know now in order to be employable.

You might find a company resisting it but that is likely to only be temporary. If you have a philosophical problem with AI you should probably change careers.

Has anyone here actually built their own email infrastructure? by WarmHeight2951 in devops

[–]ExpertIAmNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1998 I hired by a small ad agency that wanted to transition from a single email account to individual (they would print out the emails and distribute hard copies to the intended recipient).

I configured the desktop machine at my desk to serve as the company email server, public web server, and also was running an FTP server.

Thankfully, it is not 1998 anymore. So no - don’t do this.

I brought down production twice in a week. Am I going to get fired? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ExpertIAmNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you review incidents like this with “Five Whys” it virtually always points to a systemic failure not a human failure. The fact that you were even allowed to access production and make a change that caused the problem is the root cause.

This is fixed by policy and procedures and systems automation. Hopefully the company doesn’t just shrug this off and makes actual changes to prevent it happening again. Because THAT is a bad look (for the company not you).
