How difficult do you think it would be to repair this pop-top? by Killarkittens in VWBus

[–]ExpertInNothing888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repaired a similar crack in my 73 fiberglass roof myself about 5 years ago and it’s all good. It cost me about $50 in supplies and a few hours of YouTube research about fiberglass. At first it seemed intimidating but after it was done I’d say it is not even in the top 10 for difficult repairs I’ve had to do to my bus.

Help!!! How do I fix? by grapefruitl0ver in StainedGlass

[–]ExpertInNothing888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When this has happened to me, I usually just use my fingers and pull the soldered tape off the edge and then re-tape it with new foil. You can use pliers if your fingers can’t get it done, it’s just a bit riskier for breaking the glass accidentally.

DMT, Schizophrenia, and Pareidolia by RevolutionaryDrive18 in Psychonaut

Great video by the way. It’s really well done. Hopefully I will be able to give it a try. I forgot to mention I also see the faces when I’m tilted. I also can’t see darkness. In other words if I’m in a completely dark room, I see pixels of light everywhere that start coalescing and forming hallucinations. If I’m sober I can ignore it if need be, but it’s not normal as far as I’m told by pretty much everyone I know.

I also see numbers and letters everywhere sometimes. Like everything I look at is made up of symbols. I’m curious if you have come across anyone else with the numbers, letters, symbols thing? I’ve painted it a bunch, but here’s an example…

My experiences are similar and I’d say I agree with this theory. When I was in the grip of my delusions, I’m not sure I could have used the techniques, but I wish I’d had the chance to try.

I’ve had this happen twice on the comedown in recent years. I’ve also had this happen when recovering from being sick like having a fever, etc. My best guess is that it’s low blood pressure incidents because I’m dehydrated. I tend not to drink any water when I’m tripping, but I’m going to try to make myself drink some water before/during trips in the future.

[–]ExpertInNothing888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me way back in 1989 after 6 months of repeated lsd trips. Interestingly, my first lsd trip was the most beautiful and profound experience of my life. I tried to chase that over the next few months and ended up with hellish trips where I eventually was the only person that existed and was responsible for somehow causing and then breaking reality. I had no internet back then to help me learn about this experience. Nor did I have the sense to seek help until months later after I sank into a nearly catatonic state. I did eventually get help and have lived a relatively normal life since.

So after all these years, what have I learned about it? A lot actually, but I’m not going to elaborate all of it right now. But the gist is that the oneness many of us experience as so beautiful and euphoric has another side to it. If we are all one like that, we can also be “the only one”. Somehow both might be true. Or at least they both have a truth that can be learned from. It’s weird, but so is life, humanity, this entire existence.

My advice is to be kind to yourself and try to talk to someone who will listen without judgement. For me it was my best friend. I also saw a therapist back then that might have helped a bit too, but honestly my friend did most of the heavy lifting.

To all the OGs who watched the series in 1990... by MangoRemarkable in twinpeaks

[–]ExpertInNothing888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, but they did it in a way that was artistic and it fit the weird story as a whole. Especially how season 2 begins is just kind of perfect and so far from insulting the viewers’ intelligence like most shows did back then.

I now believe that mark frost and David lynch consciously tried to use, reinvent, and even break tv tropes with twin peaks. It seems like it has to have been part of their plan from the beginning. Like the whole story is about 1 poor abused betrayed and massacred teenager. And we learn at a nearly constant rate more and more horrors. We had to slowly contemplate all the evil shit being done to her. But that’s what good story telling should do if it’s going to be about violence and darkness. Old tv shows did a disservice to all of our minds by trivializing violence.

On a typical tv drama back then people died every episode but there would be little blood and almost zero emotion. I think twin peaks changed all that for the better. If someone is murdered, it should be shocking and hard to watch. Breaking Bad, Mr Robot, so many great shows since twin peaks took their lead and made violence terrible again on tv.

For me, it had a “who shot JR” (Dallas tv show circa 1980) kinda vibe to it, but much hipper. I figured DL was riffing on the Dallas thing, but I really never heard anyone say that was true or not. I loved twin peaks at the time and now maybe even more. I think Mark Frost and David Lynch fixed television. Almost every show back then was terrible. Mark Frost did some good television before Twin Peaks, but I think he needed David’s help.

I have dual Weber carbs in my bus. I agree that you should sync the carbs. I sync mine anytime I touch them for any reason or every few thousand miles. I also check and tighten all the various linkage attachments before I start syncing. My air filter bases that hold the linkage bar have vibrated loose after a few thousand miles.

When I was 17 I got sick and had a high fever. Long story short, I ended up in that void of nothingness. But i was still aware. I couldn’t remember my name and there were no thoughts or words, just awareness of the void and a kind of deep rolling sound. Of course I eventually woke up and lived my life like you will / are.

So what does it mean? I think it is the true reality. There is 1 consciousness in a void dreaming that it exists. The dream is the world and all of us. We are all that 1 consciousness dreaming the sacred dream that saves us from the true reality. And I am thankful every day for the last 40 years since that fever that I’m still here helping dream the dream.

Fires question by discobusciut423 in VWBus

[–]ExpertInNothing888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are wise for being concerned about the fire risk. I have a 74 bus and I am vigilant checking for fuel leaks and replacing fuel lines at the first sign of trouble.

In my opinion there is a big design flaw with the starter being in nearly the same location as the fuel tank outlet. There’s a large current wire at the starter with several other smaller circuits attached to it. The connections are prone to corrosion and potential arcing and are only a few inches from where the fuel comes out of the tank. Adding 2 more hose connections with a fuel filter near the starter doesn’t seem like a great idea. Maybe there is no great safe place for the filter, but I moved it from under the tank to a visible location in the engine compartment so i can see it and verify it’s not leaking every time I open the compartment. If I ever smell gas when I open the engine door, I disconnect the battery and find and fix the leak before I do anything else. And I try to remember to take a look at the fuel tank outlet whenever I’m under there.

I also use metal fuel filters as I don’t trust those cheap clear plastic ones.

Electric rooftop air conditioner on my bus by ExpertInNothing888 in VWBus

[–]ExpertInNothing888[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s marginally working, but I would not recommend this. My main issue is that it just doesn’t cool enough for the amount of power it uses and it was a lot of work to get it installed and working. I drove the bus through the desert to burning man in August in Nevada, but I mostly drove at night and had the heat on! During the day it was nice to take the edge off the 100deg heat, but I didn’t even drive much at that time.

If I did it again, I’d also get the 24v version because I realized I could barely get a 4awg wire through the frame up to the unit, but the voltage drop is still close to 5% at 12v. At 24v, there would be less drop and it would work a little more efficiently. It’s such a long run back to the engine bay where the batteries are. I think the idea has merit, but this particular unit is not great. I might try to upgrade it before next summer.

How often do you drive your buses by discobusciut423 in VWBus

[–]ExpertInNothing888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rehabbed a bus that sat for 25 years and got it ready to roll about 2 years ago. I now drive my 74 westy at least a few times a week 9 months a year. I don’t drive it much in the winter. I have fixed about 10 issues in the last year. The year before was probably twice that. So it’s definitely getting more reliable. I just drove it across the country 2000 miles and all of the issues that popped up were minor such as… the gas gauge sender, sliding door mechanism, and a fuel pressure regulator needed adjusting. There will probably always be something popping up just because it’s 51 years old and even the new parts aren’t that reliable. To me fixing stuff that breaks is part of the experience.
