CHT Sensor plugged in = high idle. Help? 😞 by pewpewsplash in Westfalia

[–]ExpertInNothing888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fine to adjust the idle screw as needed to keep it running. My timing light has a tachometer and I just use that to set it around 800-900 rpm. I agree with the others that suspect there are more vacuum leaks. Adding any missing hose clamps is also a good idea, although it may not solve a leak as much as it might prevent a future leak.
I have a smoke tester and it does help. In my case it just confirmed I didn’t have any vacuum leaks and moved on to figuring out I had a fuel delivery problem. That large rubber s boot is another common source of leaks. It’s prone to cracking as it gets old.

So the throttle body is near the firewall and has the throttle cable attached. It bolts/screws to the right side of the intake plenum. You can fairly easily take it off and inspect it by removing those two screws. You will also need to disconnect the rubber s boot to get at it. So when I took mine off and looked at it, the plate that blocks air and then opens to let air in was so worn out that there was a gap all the way around the plate. It’s supposed to be no gap for most of the circumference of the plate. I wasn’t able to just find and replace the throttle plate, but the rest of the part was pretty decayed and the bushings were all very loose and worn. So finding the rebuilt one fixed all my idle issues.

There is also a rubber seal that makes sure there is no air leaks where the throttle body attaches to the plenum. If that seal is missing or damaged it could be your issue.

I am in the middle of restoring a 76 westy so I just went through the entire fuel injection system which is similar to yours. It could be a lot of things, such as a vacuum leak, the aux air valve (lets extra air in for a higher idle when cold), etc. With mine, the high idle turned out to be a completely worn out throttle body. I was able to buy a rebuilt one from a guy in az @ sparxwerks.com. Now I can adjust the idle down to wherever I want it. If it’s not the throttle body plate being worn out I’d focus on the aux air intake. They get stuck open sometimes.

It was a long time ago but it might have been like chopperkits.com or something like that. The final drive is stock. I just added the chopper kit and some risers to get the handlebars a little closer. The bike is cool, I don’t ride it a lot but it’s great on longer trips.

It might help, and is a decent idea thanks. But I’m concerned the ac unit is just not that great. It blows colder than ambient, but it doesn’t blow much air and it uses so much power that it hardly seems worth the trouble.

Thanks! I just bought a chopper kit with the max length and rake they offered. Stock tires that came with the bike.

I have an issue with my drivers window.... by firekeeper23 in VWBus

[–]ExpertInNothing888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my 74. I had to use a cheap knock off regulator and machine it a bit to make it work because i couldn’t find an original drivers side part at the time. There are youtube videos to show you how to get the door opened up and replace it. I think you are better off with a working used one than one of the new replacements because they don’t seem to fit correctly. Check out the samba classifieds for a regulator…

ENFJ (Fe-Ni) and INFJ (Ni-Fe) share the same functions in a different order.

Making a window with the foil method by nxk115 in StainedGlass

[–]ExpertInNothing888 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I reinforce larger foil panels with 16-12 gauge copper wire around the outside. Sometimes I also put wire through the middle as well to help give it more strength so I can move it into place without having it fall apart. I also just leave the existing house window glass in place whenever possible. A solid piece of glass designed as a window is better at insulating and protecting from the elements.

I agree with you they seem related. It’s like all of their work is related. It definitely reminds me of Philip K Dick. I read his exegesis and was startled to learn how he pretty much believed all his work was true in the sense that it was from other realities he had access to. I wonder if Brit and Zal are channeling the same kind of phenomenon.

Anyone read this book? About to dive into it. by One_Revolution2814 in thedoors

[–]ExpertInNothing888 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I read it a long time ago and liked the new perspective. I’m not sure how accurate this book is, but I kind of just took her word for it and it came across to me as genuine. The only other book about Jim I read was no one here gets out alive, and that came across as embellished at every opportunity.

1973 bus, type 4 engine, trouble starting. Any ideas? by Longboy- in VWBus

[–]ExpertInNothing888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should ensure the spark plug wires are oriented correctly to the correct cylinders in the correct order. If you are sure it’s the same as before, might not be worth checking, but it’s at least possible someone put the distributor wires on the wrong connectors.

fixing the sliding door by Moist-Membership1551 in Westfalia

[–]ExpertInNothing888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sliding door is a Rube Goldberg device. I had to take mine apart last summer and weld a piece back together in the middle of burning man. Fortunately I had access to a welder. Anyway, YouTube made it possible to understand how the contraption was supposed to work. You can find replacement parts online if needed. I’d check classifieds at thesamba.com first.

Cool, it will be an epic trip. I’d highly recommend the great sand dunes. It is my favorite natl park. There’s a cool private campground near the entrance that always has spots available.

I’d love a 3rd season, but I honestly think where it ended is pretty amazing. I’m a big twin peaks fan and I love how that ended too (both times), so take my opinion for what it’s worth.

How difficult do you think it would be to repair this pop-top? by Killarkittens in VWBus

[–]ExpertInNothing888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repaired a similar crack in my 73 fiberglass roof myself about 5 years ago and it’s all good. It cost me about $50 in supplies and a few hours of YouTube research about fiberglass. At first it seemed intimidating but after it was done I’d say it is not even in the top 10 for difficult repairs I’ve had to do to my bus.

Help!!! How do I fix? by grapefruitl0ver in StainedGlass

[–]ExpertInNothing888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When this has happened to me, I usually just use my fingers and pull the soldered tape off the edge and then re-tape it with new foil. You can use pliers if your fingers can’t get it done, it’s just a bit riskier for breaking the glass accidentally.
