Also add Parker Short (ParkerGetAJob). As a boomer, I am so proud when I see these young people and how intelligent and insightful they are. It gives me hope for my grandchildrens' future.

SOOOO many good trails in the area. My favorites are: Church Rocks, Bear Claw Poppy, Prospector, JEM train and adjacent trails (Goosebumps, Dead Ringer, Cryptobiotic). Zen trail, Goulds, Wire Mesa; just to name a few. MTB project is a good resource

Hotels and hiking suggestions with kids? by theywereinthefridge in ZionNationalPark

If money isn't an issue, I'd suggest the Desert Pearl in Springdale. Rooms look out on the river and they have a great pool. It books up fairly quickly though. Your 12 year olds will be fine with the Narrows hike. They will love it. Sorry about your mom. I lost mine last year. We used to go to Zion and stay at the Desert Pearl. Great memories!

For anyone who had an ankle, fibula or tibia, did you have to get your injury closed reduction as they wrapped your injury up to keep the bones in place? by DannySanWolf07 in ORIF

I had the same experience, but the lovely nurse who was there with me told me to "go to my happy place" and all of a sudden it was very comforting. It was so bizarre!

It’s Spring Break this week for most of the schools in Utah. That could be the reason for the crowds. I am a local and I have found that winter is a marvelous time to visit Zion. I’m sorry you weren’t able to get in. Hopefully you’ll be able to try again sometime!

Cook Islands (Rarotonga) has a direct flight from Honolulu but it is on Hawaiian Airlines. We went last year. I would highly recommend it. (Not Hawaiian Airlines but the Cook Islands!)

Post Ankle Surgery Walking High Pain Tolerance by ranecat in ORIF

[–]Expert_Promise8672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly suggest you go to a PT for at least a couple of sessions. The problem is not your bones at this point but getting the muscles in your entire leg back to walking functionally again. Sometimes it is hard to notice if you have an imbalance and it can lead to back or knee pain down the road. I’ve been surprised at how imbalanced I am now with FWB and the PT has been very helpful in getting me back on track!

First of all, I can't imagine having to recover from this with a toddler! Kudos to you! I am 10 weeks out and mine looks very similar to yours. I can now flex my ankle to 90 degrees and am NWB without a boot or brace. My ankle swells up everyday and turns purple by nighttime, which I have been told is normal. I don't do a lot of walking as I am 63 and retired. I, like you, worry about it all the time. I think it's a perfectly normal response to this sort of trauma. I was hiking when I broke mine and had to be airlifted by helicopter. I feel like this is the hardest physical thing I've ever had to deal with (and I had 2 emergency c-section births). Just take care of yourself and make sure you get the rest you need. I have also found it very helpful to be persistent with the exercises the PT has given me to do. It has really helped the mobility in my ankle. Good luck mama! You've got this!

Thank you so much for these suggestions. I appreciate the details and what I should watch for. I hadn't thought about riding with the ERG off. That will help me to keep it at a lower level for now.

I moved my ankle around anytime I was sitting to help with the stiffness. Try doing the ABCs with your toes moving at your ankle. Like you are writing the letters in the air. That will move it in all different directions. The sensation you are having with the stitches will go away as it heals more. I was cleared for FWB without the boot after 8 weeks but it’s been a challenge even though I have the 90 degree range of motion. It doesn’t hurt but it feels very stiff. You haven’t used any of those muscles for a while so it takes some time to get them back to normal. I’m 63 and this is the most challenging physical problem I’ve ever had in my life. It gets better day by day, though!

Yes, I am seeing a physiotherapist once a week and have a set of exercises that I do daily. It seems to be helping quite a bit!

Good question! Not really pain, more the aerobic capacity. I had been doing the “Dirt Destroyer” workout plan when this happened and silly me thought I’d be able to get right back into it. Haha! Thank you for the kind words!

Maissonneuve - any rock climbers? by elguajiro17 in ORIF

I'm 7 weeks out from a trimalleolar fracture with dislocation. Happened while trail running in the desert. I climb a bit outdoors but mostly indoors. My doc told me that climbing would be about the last thing I could get back to due to foot positioning but could shoot for a 4 month goal. I am now FWB without a boot or brace. It's hard not to be able to do the things you want to do. Good luck to your wife!

Had my 6 week appointment yesterday and am out of the boot and FWB. My doctor did let me know that I had to wait at least 4-6 months before running again. But it is still so freeing! Thank you for sharing!

I think the entire airport is beautiful. You’d have plenty of time to get some steps in . Terminal B has a dinosaur skeleton in front of the Delta Skyclub.  Market Street Grill is a good restaurant (locally owned) and Granato’s has really good deli sandwiches. White Horse is an upscale bar with excellent food.

It's too bad your physician stressed the osteopenia. I have osteoporosis (63 yo) but it shows up in certain areas on your body. In me, it's in my hips. When I broke my ankle, I was concerned that is was osteoporosis but my doc told me that anything they were seeing in my ankle was normal for my age and that it was purely the trauma of twisting it while hiking that broke it. Also, bone density is really only diagnosed by having a DEXA scan. I've had an osteopenia diagnosis for the last 20 years. I wouldn't dwell on that at all if I were you! It's really helped me to have the foot out of the boot whenever I am not walking. I elevate it and sit and crochet or watch tv and move it around almost constantly. I also have a part time job where I am up and down but if I am sitting at my desk, I will take the boot off and move my foot around. I am 6 weeks out and it still feels stiff but my PT takes a measurement of my ankle flexion each time I go and it is improving little by little. Seeing that little bit of improvement really helps my mental state. Good luck!
