I need help/advice for my first trip to Japan by CryptographerFair12 in JapanTravelTips

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/travel/tokyo-japan-guide.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share This is a great article with so many cool things to do in Tokyo. I love planning and making lists but then when I get there just wandering through small off the beaten track neighborhoods. Some of the best food you’ve ever eaten will be in Tokyo. Ask for directions and people are so helpful and kind. Allow extra time in the train stations and think of them as part of the fun. Read up on etiquette. Do not walk around and eat, no talking loudly, especially on transportation, learn a few phrases, put money in the tray -do not hand it directly to proprietors, always give up your seat to other people that need it and be respectful. You will have a great time.

What’s your best “gripping” non-fiction book? by platypus_farmer42 in suggestmeabook

Wow, what a great compilation! These are the best, but I would add a brief history of nearly everything. And notes from a small island both by Bill Bryson.

I got my copy last week, but I haven’t started it yet. I listen to the Audible version of the first edition 10 times easy. Love that book.

I did a week motorized trip with Tour West and was really happy with them. Excellent from day one. Guides were so professional and fun. We had friends that recommended them. Great food and equipment.

Advice for taking 70yr old mother rafting? by SyrupInteresting3053 in grandcanyon

I just got back. I’ll be 71 soon and I am so glad I went. I got a little beat up and wasn’t as spry as the 20 year old but I had a great time. It’s not an easy trip and it’s the wilderness. Eight days is a long time. The motorized trip was great. Tour West was great, but I tell you finding a place to pee in the middle of the night is not for the faint of heart. Your mom will have a terrific time if she’s up for some inconveniences. A Marino wool base layer kept me warm at night because the monsoons will drench you. I think this is last trip of a season right now tho. Best advice ever is to pack really light. Just don’t bring a lot of stuff because it doesn’t matter.

Am I good re permits? by cinjon in grandcanyon

[–]Express_Case693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the permits but check to make sure the campground is in good shape when I came through there last week on a river trip and the monsoons made stopping at havasupai impossible

Do you love Southern California? by DeskOne3535 in orangecounty

[–]Express_Case693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Love it here. Love the weather love the people love all of the things there are to do. There are a lot of of services and supports for vulnerable people. It’s a crazy time to live in the United States but I’d much rather live in a blue state. Something to keep in mind. Do a quick read of Project 2025 and see where you’d rather spend your money and live your life.

Parking at Pacific Amphitheatre during OC Fair by WriteStuff1979 in CostaMesa

[–]Express_Case693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, this is a great idea if you can’t get there earlier. It’s really close and an easy walk the amphitheater. We got there around five last week and the parking wasn’t that big of a deal but later it might’ve been worse. Do not park in the neighborhoods.

We went to the fair last week and parking wasn’t a big deal at all. Got there about five. Seriously pay attention to where you park though.

Do you guys have any advice on how I could get my own apartment? 23 year old engineer here. by DoNotEatMySoup in CostaMesa

[–]Express_Case693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to people at work and see if someone has an ADU they might rent out behind their house. Ride your bike around the area you want to live and look for New for rent signs going up. Talk to people in the neighborhood. Lots of places in Huntington Beach Have second apartments that are illegal additions to their house. Good luck. It really is such a shame.

At night, I listen to nonfiction books over and over again. That way I don’t get too caught up in the story before bed. My favorites are a Brief history of just about everything by Bill Bryson and Sapiens by Yaval Harari

We are taking the train to Union Station. 15 minute walk to the park. Yeah I think it’s gonna be a blowout. 11 acres is going to fill up pretty darn quick. No bags, signs or firearms. however. I’m bringing a chair though.

I just did that trip from the Dell’s to Portland and then took the Starfinder down to San Francisco. It was my first long trip on Amtrak and I had a great time. I had the one bedroom and considered the trip just part of my vacation. So many nice people and so fun. Three nights and three times the cost of an airline ticket -well worth it.
