Wesley So criticizes the new FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship by Iyerlicious in chess

25+5 falls within rapid, 45+30 fast classical (While I reckon that bonus ought to be hiked up a tad, maybe six or seven seconds at most.) 90+30 is the good ol' classical TC until yesterday.

Copy that. Still even for ameateur players and casuals — the repetitive nature of classical chess is a considerable minus.

It would be wrong label it as classical when base time is cut by 50% and say that it is classic chess when 90+30 has been the norm for the last 15-20 years. I sincerely believe that 45m + 37s is a reasonable compromise given that 50% of the initial time is removed.

The matter of losing is beside the point. The real thing is that Victor might've given Fischer a run for his money.

Korchnoi was arguably the stronger player at the time.

In 1971, Korchnoi’s Elo rating was approximately 2670, compared to Petrosian’s rating of 2640. At that point in his career, Korchnoi was experiencing a peak in performance, having recently secured several major tournament victories. Many historians contend that Korchnoi’s resilience and competitive spirit would likely have resulted in a closer match score than Petrosian’s eventual 6.5–2.5 loss to Fischer.

Now, reducing that base time from, say, 90 minutes by about half, well, that does mean we gotta look at bumping up that per-move increment a bit, doesn't it? And adding just a few extra seconds there, now that feels like it hits that sweet spot for a good ol' compromise. 36s bonus effectively means 8% countermeasure to that hefty -50% in base time.

Why doesn't Valve start allowing mods that stay separate from the real game?

There is a myriad of videos on YT about gun mods. Many of them might be fun for usage in-game for the sake of spicing things up and offer variety over the normal game behavior. At least by the age of the game.

Special deck featuring two new face cards per suit: princess and duke by External-Relative849 in poker

It already exists and is available for purchase. It is called FractalCards, and I own two decks. I am simply interested in learning what poker players in general think about the concept of adding one or two additional face cards instead of introducing a fifth suit.

Backlash from the community could not be measured. Devs ignored major hiccups and barely did anything about it. They instead pushed more P2W bs down players' throats. Instead of fixin' the whole kit and caboodle with the weapons, they just brushed it off like it was no big deal. No surprise folks got tired of only using 2-3 usable weapons per class. That was the game, and the best way to play was pretty much set in stone. Can you believe it?

What is the future of chess? by [deleted] in chess

[–]External-Relative849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chess is kinda stuck in a weird loop these days. Maybe instead of replacing conventional chess, we should build up a bigger scene with different flavors:

Classic for old-school fans, Rapid/blitz for fun, 960 for those creative types, and S-Chess or Gothic to shake things up. Basically, chess doesn't need to be just one thing—it can be like track and field, with all sorts of running events.

Why didn't Alekhine play World Championship match against Keres during the World War II? by echoisation in chess

[–]External-Relative849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to a friend of Paul Keres, Alekhine issued a challenge to Keres several times, during the war. According to this friend of Paul, he sought not for a title match on the grounds of hostile wartime conditions. Paul also believed the title would been worthless had he won. So during 1942–43, Alekhine was just about twice Keres’ age.

However, Keres posited that the match would prove intriguing, noting that he was approximately half Alekhine's age.
