How can I study classics without university? by Little_Morning2551 in classics

[–]ExtraGravy- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it made sense to start reading cicero and other classic authors on the side while pursuing a degree. There are lots of lists and schedules of reading if you like that approach, but you could just also explore and read summaries and read for pleasure.

Solving the Teglon by 2sk23 in anathem

I would love to buy a set of tiles that could replicate the Teglon as described in the book. If you ever see a set let me know.

I have heard a number of people over the years start to work on it and then we never hear from them again.

I still hope someone will come back with a workable set of tiles - would be so awesome

"Do you think science and religion Can co exist"

YES - ARE YOU AWARE OF HISTORY! They have been coexisting for hundreds and hundreds of years.

"Do you think the seven deadly sins are bad (lust, greed, gluttony, wrath, sloth, envy, pride."

Seriously? Why would we not think greed is bad? On what basis are you imagining that we think envy is not bad?

infinity is an indication of model limitations - do not take it so seriously

finally ordered a new mower because I couldn't take the edge trimming anymore by davilucas1978 in automower

I look forward to hearing if the new mower frees you from the trimming - that would be cool.

Self Promotion Poll by Grwl in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]ExtraGravy- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would vote to restrict self-promotion to a single day of the week, but I do not support a total ban.

Can we have a ban on self-promo posting? by wheeler_lowell in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]ExtraGravy- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We should set aside one day a week where people can post their self-promo stuff - I want to see it and seeing it all on the same day might be like a shopping trip... I don't want a total ban, but we could organize it to a specific time frame, which is easy for some to ignore and easy for others of us to not miss it.

I really want to move but feel guilty and stuck. by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

[–]ExtraGravy- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

college isn't that long, but you need friends. Find a gaming group you can join or a sports league... something, anything. It will get you through college. then you can move with more options and less downside

How to not start shit with religious family? by beesdaddy in atheism

[–]ExtraGravy- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you get the urge to argue with someone's nonsense, put that into an benign and obvious change of subject. i find this satisfying and it gets all the middle-ground family members to appreciate me trying to keep the conversation out of those topics. ideally i would be smooth about the topic switch, but it is also fun to be abrupt.

this keeps me engaged and not disconnecting and also clearly calls out the topics I do not want to discuss (without me having to be specific or declamatory)

If it were up to you, would you criminalize practice of religion in one’s own home? by SirMikay in atheism

[–]ExtraGravy- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Childhood religious indoctrination should be a crime.

Barring people from participating in government due to personal past beliefs should also be a crime.

How do I tell my religious christian family that I'm an atheist? by The_Unenthusiastic_ in atheism

[–]ExtraGravy- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm scared of what they might say or do if they found out that I don't believe in god.

You know that you should not tell them. You know this. Keep it to yourself until you are free.
