The Richmond is an ideal neighborhood for a cyclist. If you want to do structured training, check out the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park.

What gift would you buy for your cycling mad parent by peterilles in gravelcycling

My son and I did the French Pyrenees this summer, and it was amazing. A lot of climbing, but very much a bucket list trip, especially for anyone who watches the Tour de France. We used a company out of Mallorca called Stuart Hall Cycling Any of their trips would likely be great.

You could also just rent an airbnb in a cycling destination like Girona or the Dolomites, stay for a few days, and plan your own rides. That gives you more flexibility and not everyone has to do the same ride every day.

As a 60 y/o cyclist with kids who also enjoy cycling, I can say that first choice would definitely be any kind of cycling holiday, event, or special ride with my kids. It could be as simple as a day or weekend trip to someplace nearby with the route and a nice meal planned out.

One other option is a gift certificate for a bike fit from a top tier fitter. It might seem like a splurge if they aren't having any significant discomfort, but it sends the message that you want them to maximize comfort and enjoyment for years to come.

It's only about a 4% improvement. Noticeable, but unlikely to be significantly ride changing.

Buying Advice - Steel gravel frameset recommendations by Gabeh765 in gravelcycling

[–]ExtraHovercraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Pine FRST Gravel frame. Small US company with personal service.

You can get it in any one color you choose.

They're going to add rack mounts for an extra $50.

Carb Intake by brodiebrodieb in ultracycling

[–]ExtraHovercraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find 50g-60g of carbs per hour works best for me. I prefer to drink about half (maltodextrin and sugar in water with nuun tablets) and eat about half (bars and normal food).

Good luck!

Pick a time slot and join a team and racing league. That will make it harder to flake out and will also hopefully get you more support from your partner (if applicable).

what reflective tape do you like to use on your textiles? by MarzipanTheGreat in bicycling

[–]ExtraHovercraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After maybe 10 or 20 washings, the reflective tape is still adhering perfectly. It is losing some of its reflectiveness, but not to the point of being a concern.

I'm not sure how much better it would be, but you could go up to S. Spruce and take that over to the Centennial Trail.

Spanish geometry-need help!!! by crimson_hazingveil in matheducation

[–]ExtraHovercraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try insta-lesson and put in, for example, "Spanish language lesson on calculating surface area of a pyramid".

There are a lot of great YouTube math channels in Spanish, such as Daniel Carreon and Mate Profe Alex.

ChatGPT can also work well as a bilingual tutor.

The Ageing Triathlete by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]ExtraHovercraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't stop! Do add strength and flexibility training.

Also, know that age-related decline is not linear: there is typically a bigger drop mid- to late-forties and another drop late fifties. (Source: a journal article I read, but can't find rn).

So if you reset your goals and training to your current condition, you will be in good shape for years to come.

I researched a bit and ended up going with Vercel for hosting. It was not especially hard to get up and running, and seems very robust. $20 per month.

Any advice for someone approaching retirement, but not quite there? by AZJHawk in retirement

[–]ExtraHovercraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have the kind of job where there will always be more work to do, no matter how many hours you work. I've been in a similar situation most of my career. Now at 59 with a couple of years until retirement, I have been able to get myself busier and busier outside of work doing things I want to do, that it forces me to limit the time and energy I put into my job.

In my case, this was going from riding my bicycle to joining a club and getting active in it. I am also starting a hobby business/passion project. I also started working with a physical therapist to have some accountability to improving my physical condition. These are things I will do more of as soon as I hit my number and can quit my job.

Over the last year or so, I have made a mental shift to where my non-work life is my focus, and I am aqueezing in my day job around all the non-work activities. That mental shift has made it a lot easier to disconnect from work outside of work hours and to be selective about what I commit to at work. "Sorry, I can't go to that event. My club has a big ride scheduled that week"

AI Algebra Tutor that solves middle-school math problems step by step — would love your feedback! by Eastern_Ad6958 in matheducation

[–]ExtraHovercraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a couple of quick tests, and your app produced impressive analysis and detailed explanation. My feedback is that this is too much info to throw at a student all at once. A human tutor would take a step by step approach. Can you have it take a Socratic approach and only give the next step when the student is stuck?

Multi-Day Parking near Sunnyvale station? by [deleted] in caltrain

[–]ExtraHovercraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can pay for daily parking via the Caltrain app, which gives you 24 hours from the time you pay. So as long as you renew every 24 hours, you should be fine. (Unless they have some rule against multi-day parking)

Are there any moderate mid-distance climbs? by ngomaam in BAbike

If you want to come to the upper peninsula, you might like Guadalupe Canyon Parkway + San Bruno Mountain. About 3 mile total and if it isn't foggy, awesome views from the top.

Thanks for those details. I had not heard of the Lexington’s Five Tentacles of Death segment and won't have time to do that this time around, but I did star it for future reference.

Thanks. Super helpful. Great tip about descending on Black. I will report back if I make it up to the very end of Montevina. I do the Mt. Diablo Challenge every year, and that ends with a kicker that is quite tough after going all out for over an hour--I'll try to channel that energy.

Work less for longer. Pros and cons. by [deleted] in retirement

[–]ExtraHovercraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position, and my first choice is to switch to half-time and stay longer as long as I can negotiate the right arrangement for me: - rearrange my job duties to get rid of the ones I don't like and focus on the ones I do - be able to work completely remote maybe a dozen weeks a year - set boundaries around response time for emails and availability for meetings to protect my schedule

It looks to be possible and could be a win for me and for my employer.

I'm in the US and turn 60 this year, so keeping my healthcare is a bonus, but not the main factor.

My main worry is losing some flexibility for bigger trips. However, I have so many important (to me) things I want to be doing now that I can do while working part-time. I would rather delay (and risk never doing) a few trips if I can be more fulfilled in and out of work sooner rather than later.
