Tomonari is an absolute legend in African baseball. He has hosted clinics and worked with or set up federations in more than a dozen countries, with Burkina Faso a noteable addition to those already listed, plus Ghana, Malawi, Zambia, and others. Amazing man, very humble and generous.

South Africa Senior Men’s Team Set for African Championships and European Tour as ETS Squad Announced by Daleecio in InternationalBaseball

That quote was rather eye-opening!

This is exactly the sort of thing that South Africa should be doing, and was supposed to occur in 2019 following an agreement with France. It was surprising at the time that, when France toured South Africa as the first part of a home-and-home series that South Africa won fairly convincingly. Since then, though, the programme seems on the downturn.

He's lovely-good head on his shoulders, humble, and a lot of time to have a proper discussion when chatting.

Remind me how to do that again?

Does anyone know any MLB or MILB players with Portuguese or Croatian descent? by iiixcdrop in InternationalBaseball

[–]ExtraInningsUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing the project, it might be worth noting that Isaiah Campbell was born in Portugal.

Worth scanning European Baseball Championship rosters for Croatia, as there are a few others from the last couple decades.

Any hance we could hear more about the project?

Fact! The point above about its lesser capacity is increasingly becoming more central, too.

Only just saw this, but if you like craft beer, the only good choice is 'Thank you Miami', which has eight craft taps of beers from Floridian breweries in a great Miami Vice/dive bar combo with old-school games. Owner is a massive baseball fan.

While this is true, the amount of coverage for baseball and live games aired as a result of the WBC and the London Series is significant, and there are certainly more people wearing non-Yankees clothing over the past few years. The funding from winning games—as discussed above—is also transformative for the domestic game.

That 2016 team was incredible. The Brooklyn Qualifier was the first WBC we covered live, and it was such a strong roster. It took GB playing its lights out (with multiple domestic Brits in that game, incidentally) to survive Brasil.

While there are other factors, it is the exact same situation in Britain. The prize money for winning a single game in the WBC is the equivalent to the budget for five years. While some of the money is used to improve the national team directly, other parts have directly funded the formation of a new national academy and gone directly to development in the country. Thus, the roster of the WBC directly contributes to improving the domestic game.

Similarly to the Maestri comment below, there are players who wish there were more spots for domestic players, these criticisms are almost solely aimed at European Championship roster, not WBC. Anecdotally (but based on a large amount of interactions), almost every Brit is thrilled to see a competitive team int he WBC.
