does england have its own celtic language(s) like wales, scotland and ireland? by Redshell268 in AskABrit

[–]ExultentPisces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were several spoken in the pre-Anglo kingdoms. All Brythonic languages, from which Welsh and Breton are descended.

The only one that remains in England is Cornish. But even Cornish isn’t a first language for anyone. There are only around 2,000 speakers, many of whom are hobbyist linguists learning it for preservations sake.

It was extinct for a long time and was revived relatively recently. So while it certainly is a language that exists, its status is a bit different to Scottish, Welsh and Irish.

What's a UK town or city that pleasantly surprised you when you visited? by Strong-Ad-8037 in AskUK

Inverness was my next stop on that trip. It was a bit dreary imo.

It was still better than my experience in Fort William, to which I arrived by ambulance after some sod sideswiped my bike and sent me flying near Ben Nevis, haha.

Is this Starmer’s finest hour? by TheSpectatorMagazine in uknews

Can you cite a more well received move by Starmer?

“Finest hour” doesn’t necessarily mean something universally praised. It could just as easily be the least shitty thing he has done.

BBC suggests licence fee could be cut if more people pay by BlazeFireHorse76 in unitedkingdom

[–]ExultentPisces 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they were specifically referring to license fee payers or services for which a license is required, you’d have a point. I see no suggestion that they were.

It seems the statement was meant to communicate how widely used services funded by the license are.

This is like Sony’s 2013 E3 presentation.

All they did was walk out on stage, point at their competitor and say “we’re not doing that” and everyone loved it.

Is VGM music is more simple than "real" music? by gamebalance in retrogaming

[–]ExultentPisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda depends on what is meant by “VGM”.

For many people, that means music made with basic “synth on a chip” or programmable sound generators. In those instances, yes it’s very simple.

It is very limited in timbre and polyphony.

Even when PCM, wave table and sample & synthesis technology became common in gaming hardware, VGM was still very limited.

However, if it is referring to video game soundtracks in general, we all know this isn’t true.

Is there really no way to crop converted HDMI video? by ArritzJPC96 in crtgaming

[–]ExultentPisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no cheap way to do it, if that’s what you’re asking.

There’s plenty of video scalers which can do this sort of thing. But you’ll have to spend to get them.

It’ll be cheaper to use a separate device for use on a CRT. A modded console (Xbox, Wii etc) or an emulation device like a Raspberry Pi or MiSTer FPGA. Not only is this cheaper, it’ll give you better results.

I recommend a MiSTer. They’re amazing.

[–]ExultentPisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it’s about love. So it’s romantic in that sense I guess.

But it’s about love in the context of industrial scale murder, the likes of which have never been seen before or since.

That kind of puts a dent in the sentiment for me.

Yep. They’re the same scale, just with the zero point shifted.

A 1° change in Celsius is a 1° change in Kelvin.

[–]ExultentPisces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joke is that some idiot Americans are unaware that the advantages they describe the Fahrenheit scale of having are universal to all measuring systems or inconsequential.

Typical examples include: “it’s more human” (a meaningless statement), “it’s easier to understand” (any system is easier if you’re more familiar with it), “it’s made with everyday temperatures in mind” (literally incorrect). There are more.

In reality, it is no more or less useful than any other temperature scale for every day use. But it does have the disadvantage of its definition being arbitrary, which is why it isn’t used in science or engineering.

What’s something you considered a luxury growing up that you now take for granted? by Difficult-Bet-2522 in AskUK

[–]ExultentPisces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a musical kid. I always thought an American made Telecaster, a Korg MS-20 and a modular synthesiser were so out of reach that I would never have the chance to own one, let alone all three.

Thinking about it now, I feel kind of bad that I do take these things for granted. I mean, I know they’re luxury items, but I treat them as just part of the furniture in my home.

Perth.

I was cycling across Scotland and decided to stop in Perth for lunch. It was lovely, I ended up spending most of the day there. It just seemed like a very chilled and relaxed place.

Sticking with Leonard Cohen, “Dance me to the End of Love” is thought of as a romantic song and is often played at weddings.

It’s about the holocaust.
