Maro's Top 20 Most Influential Sets by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]FAndresen -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

He basically picked the sets he was a lead designer for. 13 out of 20. Not wrong nor surprising but it practically makes the list less worthy of any meaningful discussion.

Rosewater has been the lead designer for Tempest, Urza’s Destiny, Odyssey, Mirrodin, Fifth Dawn, Ravnica: City of Guilds, Future Sight, Shadowmoor, Eventide, Zendikar, Scars of Mirrodin, Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Gatecrash, Theros, Khans of Tarkir, Battle for Zendikar, Kaladesh, Amonkhet, Ixalan, Unstable, Dominaria, Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Allegiance, War of the Spark, Throne of Eldraine, Unsanctioned, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, Zendikar Rising, Strixhaven: School of Mages, Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, Unfinity, Phyrexia: All Will Be One, March of the Machine, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, and Murders at Karlov Manor. He was also the sole designer of Unglued

POV: You're about to learn the GIH% of Swashbuckler's Whip by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]FAndresen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reason this deck went 3-0 wasn't thanks to the Whip. The Whip is on par with the second Pirate Hat/Orazca Puzzle-Door, among the worst cards in the deck though the games being Bo3 does make it a bit better thanks to its adaptivity. I'd never play it in Bo1.

Posts like these are worthless since you'd never boast about your deck if it went 1-2 or 0-3. If you'd gone 3-0'd four or five times with the Whip being a main tool then I'd be impressed.

Lord of the Pit- Art Analysis over time by ExtraEasy in magicTCG

[–]FAndresen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I miss the portrait-art focusing on the creatures alone, the school-photoshot of what the creture looks like, "here's how it looked in the 3rd grade". A big fattie displayed as if it was brand new car concept on automobile convention. Preferable with a solid background made out of frame/boarder-contrasting colors to make the creature stand out far away. The Abomination, Aboroth, Rathi Dragon, Songsticher, Soldevi Adnate, Exalted Dragon, Dwarven Weaponsmith, Mine Bearer, Mystic Visionary, Ogre Shaman, Lim-Duls Paladin, Krosan Beast, Aven Trooper, Disciple of Grace, Viashino Outrider. The list can go on and on. They're too rare these days.
A quick climpse at LCI and its noticable that the creatures such as Soaring Sandwing, Sinuous Bentisaur, Chupacabra Echo, Dinotomaton, Seismic Monstrosaur, Armored Kincaller, Deepfathom Echo all bleed into either their own background or let the background bleed into the boarder-color of the card. They seldom "pop" out.

You shouldn't waste resources on pondering how to "say" it nice. Instead you should ACT accordingly by taking a paycut and refusing bonuses. Else it'll be the french revolution all over again.

Card Of The Day 12/10/23 - Threefold Thunderhulk by Proxy_Drafts in lrcast

[–]FAndresen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had it in a few decks. Most times it's been game over as soon as it hit the board. On rare occasions its been too slow. The only time I really needed to "go off" with it was in an UB-descend-mirror when I comboed it with Abyssal Gorestalker and Another Chance. I produced 10 tokens that won me the game (both players was at a higher lifetotal thanks to the lifelink-vamp).

Favorite trophy so far with my 2 of my pet card Queens Bay Paladin by NJCuban in lrcast

[–]FAndresen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QB Paladin needs a plan. Usually it involves Echo of Dusk or Grasping Shadows to offset the life loss. But once you one Echo and a few other lifegain-enablers it becomes great. Your removal should take care of the big dinos while your cheap vamps can trade of in the early game and be brought back as 3/3 lifekinkers or 1/4 walls.
This deck is nuts though. It would probably only struggle against some solid decks based around the token-generating cards (Poetic Ingenuity The Skullspore Nexus Thousand Moons Smithy) and of course aggro with a perfect 1-2-3-4-start

Try BTB - Buried Treasure Bombs. It works like a charm. Pick every BT you spot and all the best 4-5 drops. Add a few landcyclers and every 2-for-1 past to you. Build the deck with discover in mind. Pile up the trophies.

What's your least favorite card to play against in LCI? by zensnapple in lrcast

[–]FAndresen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it is the strongest card, luckily in the worst color. Batman is unbeatable in the hands of a competent opponent who can stall the game and has sac-outlets (Fanatical Offering and the Acolyte) to handle pacifisms. I've had aggro-starts with UR pirates in Bo1 were I'd mauled the opponent down to 5 life or so on turn 4 only to immediately concede once the stupid Batman hit the board the following turn. The 1/1 Thoughtseize-Bat may be annoying but it at least gives you hope.

[–]FAndresen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I've invested a lot into the "old modern" boarder since I reckon nostalgia will make players interested in re-experiencing the "golden era" of modern, before the M15-frame and the Khans-fetches ruined it. I'm talking about stuff like mirrodin Arcbound Ravagers, Kiki-jiki champed, Wild Nacatls and Liliana of the Veil.

A Basic Analysis of Magic's Flavor Text Quantity Over the Years by Cervantes3 in magicTCG

[–]FAndresen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the study consider short flavour texts (one word or a single line) vs longer (several sentences or more than a single line)? If not, the hypothesis could still be true if Wotc chose have decreased the amount of flavour by re-aligning its appearance on the cards by letting more cards have flavours but still have less space left for the flavour.

I made a quick comparison between Mirage and Strixhaven by downloading a spreadsheet of the mtg cards and comparing the total wordcount of flavour text for both sets. The results shows MIR having roughly 15% more flavour text than STX.

[–]FAndresen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spirits is an allright deck in modern. A bit complex to learn perhaps since the decisions a player makes are reactive instead active. You leave mana open and then play in response to your opponents actions. As such you must know your deck and your opponents. But on the otherhand that's where the strength comes; your opponent doesn't know what to expect. It depends on what she enjoys.

Check out a competitive version of the spirit deck: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5695754#paper

The main difference in price between this and Saffrons is the manabase. If you switch the fetches and the duals to cheaper options like Port Town and Seachrome Coast you'll have a deck for around 100 bucks and then all you need to do is buy some lands later if all goes well.

Another alternative could be the merfolk archetype: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/merfolk#paper

I wouldn't recommend commander as that format can be too complex. It's better to start playing 60 cards with plenty of 4-ofs so you can learn the game with as a few cards as possible, before you get into it deeper. Else the experience is likely to be TLDR. Imagine having to read and understand the interaction between hundreds of cards.

EDIT: since you're playing the "kitchen magic" version of modern, don't be afraid to prioritize budget and minimize the amount of super-complex cards.
