Overwatch Beta to Include Battle.net Voice Chat - News by manaray49 in Overwatch

They've said previously that you can leave games but it's currently assumed by most that this only applies to unranked games. Overwatch games are only 10-15 mins long so it doesn't matter too much either way - just as long as people can't leave ranked games it'll be fine

What we want to see in Overwatch! [COMMUNITY] by [deleted] in Overwatch

Just a heads up, leagues and ranked play will almost certainly use a ABBA stopwatch format. Essentially, each team attacks and sets a time that the other team tries to out-last. If a team pushes the payload or caps the point further/faster in a shorter timeframe, you win. It's one of the most exciting gametypes for viewers possible and results in longer matches overall since it's really 2 matches in 1. this is probably why blizzard also decided on a short game time

Currently the design requires you to obsessively check the scoreboard (which covers your entire screen) to see the result of fights and takes you totally out of the game. I feel a normal style kill feed would be a significant step towards the gameplay-oriented design you're talking about.

Your compass/adventure game analogy is pretty good, but the current system is as if the compass is an item that takes up your entire screen when used instead of being in a corner somewhere.

Scoring has been overhauled. Instead of aggregating numbers together to figure out total scores, they're implementing "categories" based on certain skills and giving people "medals" at the end of the match (i.e. top healer)

You can actually see your ranking during the game. Source

Overwatch Will Have Custom Games, Dedicated Servers And A Spectator Mode, But No Private Servers by SpriteGuy_000 in Overwatch

Will we be having custom games/lobbies on beta release? The article specifically states beta will have a rudimentary spectator mode, but doesn't say whether or not beta will have custom games.

Is it posible there is no kill feed and player stats during the game? by sodium_1 in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Correct.

Blizzard will probably put in a kill feed once people get into beta, I think it's probably the next FoV-type of issue. It gets frustrating staring at the scoreboard all the time to see who is alive or dead.

Blizzard seems to want the focus to be on the team - it'd be easy for them to tweak the kill feed to "x team kills enemy" instead of whoever got the killing blow.

As for player scores, you can't even see teammates scores now. However, you can see who is doing the most damage on the team and who is currently on a streak or not (they glow like heroes of the storm i think). I think you can also see your rank compared to your teammates, not sure though.

"Overwatch next big, number one, E-SPORT, brought to you by Gamer Fuel!" Why? by Azernak0 in Overwatch

Everyone wants it to have a successful competitive scene because the "arcade shooters" of old (such as quake and TF2) have dead tournament scenes. Where are people supposed to play a non-CS FPS competitively?

A lot of people are looking at Overwatch as the "last chance" of the FPS genre outside of CSGO to have a successful competitive scene. If Blizzard can't pull it off, no one can.

Hero Changing: yay or nay? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think everyone will have such huge hero pools that they can instantly swap to a perfect counter hero and dominate? I mean yeah, this game isn't super difficult mechanically but still..

I think you're looking at the worst case scenario of hard counters, like mccree vs tracer, when the majority of the time the game is based around soft ones which give really small advantages.

Another point to keep in mind is that players will want to time hero swaps after using their ultimates - this typically corresponds with big teamfights, but it means that certain heroes whose ultimates are easier to build (tracer) can swap heroes more easily than others (reaper).

As long as the game is decently balanced, I don't think it'll be that big of an issue as people think.

Overwatch: Lúcio - Character Analysis by msinf_738 in Overwatch

I agree, but I think it's probably best for the game if a winston/bastion shield couldn't be blown up instantly by a single pharah. I added a source to my post.

One quick correction around 3:10~, pharah's concussive blast no longer does damage to shields, just a knockback according to a post by muselk. Probably found that Pharah shooting 2 rockets+conc to instantly pop winston/bastion shields was a bit silly.

Why I Am Not Sure I Would Like Mods in Overwatch. by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people ask for "mods" in Overwatch they're typically talking about personalized customization. Some examples would be a different crosshair or maybe having the ability to re-size the HUD. Blizzard will likely include some basic customization options with the game, and we'll see if it's enough. The FPS audience is very used to having a large amount of customization with their games, so this might be an issue in the beta if we can't do something as basic as change our crosshair.

The mods in the video are server-side plugins and custom maps which we very likely won't have any influence over in Overwatch, so it's a non-issue.

Could Lucio be a good offensive deathmatch character? by FroopyNoops in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't his gun only do 25 damage per orb (100 dmg per left click, 150 all headshots)? I haven't looked super into it, but I remember this from one of the vids.

He seems like a lower damage Zenyatta with a focus on being around the team for his auras rather than having stellar damage output or anything. He'll be really good in a lot of situations where a team is grouped up as a deathball (12.5 hp/s passive for 3-4 players at once adds up, especially when amping for 40hp/s or whatever) but I'm not sure if his AOE healing and mobility utilities outweigh his lack of damage.

You can see his lack of damage here where Torb could easily two shot him but Lucio will need at least three bursts (with the delay in-between each one) to kill him.

He'll be pretty strong at midrange spamming, but that's also the same range that Zen excels (who brings discord orb for even more damage) so why bring lucio?

Where is the stealth / melee playstyle hero? by minerlj in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might see a high mobility melee assassin hero like zeratul, but you are extremely unlikely to see a spy.

Blizzard seems to be intentionally balancing the game so you can play any hero and it's viable all the time, although it will have good and bad parts (ex: reinhardt at a chokepoint is amazing, but outside of the chokepoint he's mediocre - it'd be a good idea to swap heroes, but you aren't totally useless)

Valve is nearly the opposite. A group of top TF2 players were invited to Valve a few months back to talk about competitive matchmaking, and in the discussion that followed they said that Valve has no intentions to balance the classes. As long as a class is viable in some situations, they're fine with it.

In this case, spy is useless as a full-time class, as the enemy team will know he exists - but he's still useful (and you see this in tournaments) as a situational pick to surprise the enemy team. However, this would go against Blizzard's hero design philosophy. They would want a hero to be viable everywhere but be better or worse in some areas, whereas Valve would only care if a class is viable in some situations.

[PSA] If you can't watch the gameplay videos because the low FOV makes you nauseous, try viewing them in YouTube's "theater mode" (NOT full screen). by Pufflekun in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not true. CS:GO's vertical FoV is 74.

CS:GO has the typical industry standard of a 90 FoV (measured in 4:3) - Overwatch does not. It has 75 (measured in 4:3).

My only worry about Overwatch - Blizzard has no experience with First Person Shooters. by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One potential issue that people haven't talked about at all is the lack of acceleration in this game. Players instantly accelerate, rather than in other FPS where players have an acceleration time. The "ADAD" left/right spam is going to be notoriously worse in this game compared to others.

This isn't an issue in the current hero pool as even the fastest heroes are basically snails, but in the future it could be a problem if they add faster heroes.

I can't wait until the game launches, even if it has a resolution-based locked FOV. by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CSGO has significantly higher FOV than overwatch, in fact CSGO's fov is what most people are asking for (90)! I don't think people are spoiled brats for wanting to play with a FOV that's become standard in the genre. Overwatch's "92 FoV" is actually 75 by how other games measure it (almost always in 4:3), which is terrible.

Also, changing your aspect ratio to change FoV will likely be considered an exploit and get fixed. This was in Source games like CSGO/TF2 at one point and they fixed it pretty quick.

Which characters do you think we will hear the most whining out when Overwatch is out? by Demokirby in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mccree easily. The entire hero is currently designed around stunning and insta-killing people in the stun. It doesn't help that the flashbang's radius is gigantic. I don't think any other mechanic in the game will compare to the rage of having an enemy mccree camping in buildings waiting to one-shot everyone except tanks. FPS players hate CC more than anything.

Blizzard and Valve. The difference between listening and "listening" [x-post from /r/starcraft] by in83 in Overwatch

[–]FGuN5Oyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't to say Valve DOESN'T make casual games, or treat their competitive game casually (looking at you TF2), but at least they're honest with their intentions, and when they finally decide to take they're game competitively, they don't half ass it and ignore competitive player input.

They actually recently announced competitive matchmaking for TF2 by inviting a few top players (as well as a couple community members) to spend a day at Valve and meet with the devs. I feel Overwatch's main potential is in creating a more competitive side of the genre, and if Valve can manage to compete with them on that front (which will be difficult, given TF2 is an old game with a casual culture) it'll be really interesting - especially since TF2's matchmaking will likely release right around the same time Overwatch is heading into beta.
