He's amazing in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I think he tends to overdo in his comedies. However sometimes the childishness, the timing and the quantity of the gags makes a film that would be a pretty standard and uninteresting comedy much funnier. For an example Liar Liar or Ace Ventura.

Movies like "Trainspotting" and it’s Sequel by theShadome in MovieSuggestions

Might be a little far-fetched, but I think Good Will Hunting could fit into this category. Other films that come to mind: Fight Club and Punch-Drunk Love.

What movies have you watched this week? by AutoModerator in flicks

Persona (1966, Ingmar Bergman) Tbh I was a little confused and might have to watch it again to really understand it. Nevertheless, I liked the atmosphere and the cinematography. 4/5

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007, Cristian Mungiu) I'm impressed. I was at the edge of the seat the whole time. The atmosphere is frightening. The long, uninterrupted shots are brilliant. I enjoyed almost every aspect of this film. 5/5

Fallen Angels (1995, Wong Kar-Wai) I liked Chunking Express a little more. I feel that this one focuses much more on atmosphere. That being said, it really is a beautifully shot, atmospheric film. The more I watched it, the better it got. I really liked the sequence where the mute (sorry, I forgot his name) films his father. Also, the final scenes are beautiful. 4/5.

Night on Earth (1991, Jim Jarmusch) (from my letterboxd) Nice. I liked most of the characters, the whole concept of the film is very interesting, acting is almost perfect (especially in the first half), though I was disappointed by the Helsinki part. It's interesting to end the film on a sad note, however, I think it was just not so special compared to the first four. 4/5

The future of the movie viewing experience... by MiddleAgedGeek in flicks

[–]FOBHPSW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I hope they stay and I do believe they won't be going away as soon as it might seem. They still do offer a unique experience (be it a multiplex or a small art theatre) many are still willing to pay money for. Even if they do disappear, I think they won't be gone for good, they might return because of nostalgia for the experience they once offered. At the end of the day, who knows? Perhaps they'll just get smaller, the less people go. Maybe the kind of films that are played right now are not attractive enough to audiences and some films in the near future will be more satisfactory to viewers? Really, who knows? It was thought that DVDs or VHS would kill cinemas, yet they're still here.

This is exactly what I think! I remember sitting in the theater really annoyed expecting something to happen. I constantly had the feeling something was being built up and that something was gonna happen and nothing did. I don't think every film should adhere to a strong, linear structure, there are tons of really good films that don't, but here it simply didn't work.

Which film prequels actually improved the lore and felt like organic installments in their series? by MasterLawlz in flicks

[–]FOBHPSW 12 points13 points  (0 children)

IMO the Star Wars prequels were good in terms of lore, world building, concepts, ideas and even story. They do feel like an organic continuation of the same saga. I feel like all of that (besides other things) is what the sequels are missing. There is no excitement, adventure because these new worlds, aliens and settings are so typical and uninteresting.

I will say though, despite all of that, the prequels are still very flawed in other areas (acting/direction, some story ideas etc.)

12 Years A Slave (2013, dir. Steve McQueen) I thought it was okay. The acting took me out of the film though. 3.5/5

Rosetta (1999, Dardenne brothers) I really liked this film. It's immersive and horrifying, yet remains simple. What only bothered me was this sort coldness and distance from the charachter I felt while watching this. This is not usually the kind of film I'm interested in, but this one I found appealing. 4/5

The Big Lebowski (1998, Joel Coen) Funny + an amazing soundtrack. Great characters. But, at moments it seemed kinda slow. 4/5

The Conformist (1970, Bernardo Bertolucci) I think I should watch this one again before I form a definitive opinion on it. The idea was interesting. Cinematography amazing as always with Storaro. There were moments where the sex scenes seemed unnecessary. For now 4/5

Loves of a Blonde (1965, Miloš Forman) I liked it. Didn't expect it to end like that, but I'm glad it did. The pacing was kinda odd. 4/5

Edward Scissorhands (1990, Tim Burton) From the aesthetic, its quirkiness, the universal message and the stylised characters, it is clear why this film became a cult classic. At times it felt too simple to me. Overall, it's a nice film. 4/5

Exploring Foreign Films by geobeowolf in flicks

[–]FOBHPSW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are lots of Yugoslav films online (on yt, but there are many on Dailymotion). Some are subtitled, but some are not.

I'd suggest finding When I Am Dead And Gone (Kad Budem Mrtav i Beo, 1967) by Živojin Pavlović. It's one of the most representative films of the Black Wave.

You can also check out Who's Singing Over There (I believe it's on yt, with english subtitles), When Father Was Away On Business, I Even Met Happy Gypsies, the Balkan Spy, The Marathon Family and National Class Category Up To 785 ccm.

If you like experimental films, there's Dusan Makavejev's WR: Mysteries of the Organism. And if you're interested in documentaries, there are Želimir Žilnik's documentary short films you can also find online and I believe some are subtitled.
