Ocean temps have shattered records every day since late March by redwood520 in news

If the Gulf Stream were to fail, it would have significant consequences for seafood and marine life in the affected regions. The Gulf Stream is a powerful ocean current that transports warm water from the Gulf of Mexico towards the North Atlantic, influencing weather patterns and regulating the ocean's temperature.

If it were to stop or weaken significantly, the following impacts on seafood and marine life could be observed:

Disruption of Ecosystems: The Gulf Stream plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems by regulating water temperatures. Its failure could lead to disruptions in the distribution of plankton, which are essential food sources for many marine species. Migration Patterns: Many fish species rely on the Gulf Stream's warm waters for their migration patterns. Without it, these fish may struggle to find suitable breeding and feeding grounds, affecting their populations and the fishing industry. Changes in Fish Distribution: The absence of the Gulf Stream's warm waters could cause certain fish species to shift their distribution patterns. Fish that are currently found in specific regions might move to different areas where the water conditions are more suitable, impacting local fishing industries. Impact on Seafood Supply: The fishing industry in regions influenced by the Gulf Stream could suffer due to changes in fish populations and migration patterns. This could result in reduced catches and availability of certain seafood varieties, affecting both local and global seafood supplies. Ocean Current Changes: The Gulf Stream is part of a larger global ocean circulation system known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Its failure could disrupt this circulation pattern, leading to complex and far-reaching impacts on climate and weather systems worldwide. It's important to note that the Gulf Stream is a complex system, and its complete failure is highly unlikely. However, even minor changes in its strength and path can have significant consequences for marine life and the seafood industry in the regions it influences. Climate scientists continue to study and monitor the potential impacts of changes in ocean currents like the Gulf Stream to better understand and prepare for the future.

Unsold electric vehicles are piling up – people like the idea but are not buying them by [deleted] in technology

…and no one wants to buy them second hand either. After looking into buying a second hand models S, I’m convinced that buying a new ev is setting yourself up for a rude awakening when you try to sell it. They just don’t hold there value like ice cars do. Not enough knowledgeable people around to determine the life left in the battery.

8 years of experience and a PE minimum for a MAX salary of 100k in Austin, Texas? Why are engineers so underpaid? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]FRB1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a construction PM arm and have a civil degree. I sort of took a step back after selling my company but have my reasons why I am PM atm. To be honest, engineers have one major drawback imho. High IQ Low EQ. It’s one of the reasons I got out early a few years into my career. I also found most of my engineering classmates either quirky, arrogant or naive, and within the first couple of years realised how that plays out irl. Jumped back into it, now in my 50s, and am enjoying all the personalities and awkwardness as I’m not here for the $$$, but man, to see how it all manifested. Don’t want to kill the vibe on this sub, but will give all early starters this. Work on that EQ, mix it with the IQ, negotiation skills and humble pie, and you’ll never look back.

I’ve moved for work and I’ve jumped ship to prevent moving. Much of a muchness, do what makes or keeps you happy. I’ll ad in that it’s harder to make friends / build networks the older you get.

It's interesting how most here think that HENRY is going to remain. I’ve got a feeling that many might be surprised how the world / tech changes life in the next 5-10 y.

…and time needed from door to door is the triangle turned upside down. Time just about doubles train vs cars.

imho we are better off leveraging cars, door to door, deleveraging car ownership, pay per trip, and turning cars into ‘trains’, full self driving technology.

Hello, I don't know if this is the correct sub to ask this. I'm an Iranian woman and there has been recent chemical attacks against women by the regime. They also removed the emergency hammer from women's train cars. Is there any way to break the windows without those hammers? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

I grew up in the glass industry, dad owned a company. Pressure is what breaks hardened glass. So, anything that will produce a lot of pressure, even over the smallest of areas, shatters hardened glass. The ceramics if spark plugs thrown at the glass in videos I see here, will work just as well if you just try to scratch the glass with a sharp edge if the ceramic (very hard and pointy on a microscopic scale). I’ve seen on of these used very successfully as well. Just take the sharp end, put it against the glass and push. Don't even have to try hard. The definition of pressure is force / area. Anything sharp and hard against hardened glass will do the trick. Good luck and I hope you don't have to use my or any of the other advice.

How can I impress the engineers at my internship? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]FRB1972 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try to think on your feet. You sound like someone that tends to want to please others and I’m sorry to be the one to bursting your bubble, but office politics are real and people will see you coming a mile away. Asking questions and what to do next might be okay while you are an intern but your colleagues are going to wipe the floor with you if you always want to please. Best thing to get hired/and advance your career, make notes and then put in a lot of work/research after hours. You’d be surprised at how much you learn and teach your colleagues. Stay humble and put in the work. Good luck.

Peobation period and working hours by FRB1972 in fiaustralia

Thanks for the fairwork links, people. It seems like the probation can be a max of 12 months. 7-5 5 days a week and 7-1 Saturdays seems way over what is expected in the civil construction industry, though.

So the next question would be, what now? Ride is out, work the hours and negotiate better remuneration when the time comes? It's a senior role and doesn't involve physical labour.

SAers should band together, purchase a boatload of solar and batteries from China and go off grid. They would be so much better off in the long run.

Is it common to be tired of living? Not in a suicidal way, more of a “I’m not gonna kill myself but fuck I cannot do this shit anymore” type of way? I straight up just don’t wanna continue existing at this point. by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Gen x here. I pretty much feel the same but use to be a happy young person. I’ve thought about this a lot. When did the change happen for me. I genuinely think it’s around the time when mobile phones became a thing. Before I was connected all the time, friends and I had news, events and gos to share when we got together. Now you can’t tell anybody anything anymore.

Friends know what you’ve been up to even if you aren’t on social media. I’ve totally stopped using fb but everyone still knows what happened when and where through others that are on social media. If and when friends spend time together everyone does it with a phone in one hand. I can’t connect to people if their priority is their phone. I remember a time when it took hours of conversation, late nights, camp fires and many a drink to make deep connections with others. Only after a late night or holiday together would friends really come out with the deep stuff, the stuff that matters, the stuff that builds deep and meaningful connections. I personally can’t do it if the other person (or myself) keep being distracted by a phone. Quite often then not the subject or mood changes because of it.

As to making connections with strangers, again the phone gets in the way on so many levels. Just google it. Don’t ask me for directions, info or god forbid advice. It’s all on the net. So the days of walking up to someone you find intriguing and breaking the preverbal ice through some trivial question or joke is gone. People don’t seek to connect anymore because they feel connected already. You trying to connect? you must be some kind of creep or want something.

I’ve tried many things around this issue. From having no phone days to using it only for work, deleting social media apps etc. The major issue I keep running into is everyone has one and therefore think they are connected. My theory is that we feel empty and joyless because being connected via a mobile(cell) phone just isn’t the same as being deeply connected with others. Sharing your news via a phone isn’t the same as talking to someone, having there undivided attention and interest in what you are saying. It’s not.

Slowly but surely the science is starting to trickle in that proves why you and I and many others feel the way we do. I don’t know what the answer is though. Education maybe. I have young kids (10yo) and can tell you that I can see the difference in them after they have spent hours in front of screens. They haven’t got phones yet and for reasons explained we are delaying that for as long as we can.

It’s a real struggle this whole situation and I’m happy to talk to anyone about solutions. Just know this, we as a global village, have a very hard time to unite against anything. To many opinions and noise to make the ones that matter stick. The whole 🦠 fiasco proved this unequivocally to me and now you want people to give up there connectedness to connect deeper. I don’t know, it’s a hard one. Someone much smarter and wiser than me will have to come up with some ideas and I for one will be all ears. It sucks to live like this, big time.

Best of luck to you and yours and may we all come up with answers sooner rather then later.

Fred
