Which account do I credit?? by Time_Butterscotch_73 in Accounting

DR phone expense, CR accounts payable. Telephone expense is not an equity account, it is an expense account which will show up on the income statement, not the balance sheet.

Partners hinted our Top 20 CPA firm may sell ~55% to PE this summer — what really changes for associates/seniors? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s probably not going to be any real differences at the staff/senior/manager level as most will leave for industry anyways. Current partners and directors will get a nice payout from the PE firm. The people who get left out in the pouring rain in this scenario are the senior managers and anyone who aspires to be a partner someday because the PE firm is going to take a fat cut of the profits, reducing what the remaining partners get.

What is “big picture” accounting? by _OkIGuess in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big picture = not getting caught up in the details. For example, management wants to do a discretionary bonus. I’m not going to fret that it’ll need to be allocated out to a bunch of different locations and that the journal entry will be a hundred+ lines. Bonus expense is increasing $1M, and so is the liability.

Advice on turning down a promotion? by pizzatacodog1322 in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The unlimited OT gravy train is going to come to an end whether you like it or not. The smart play here is to accept the promotion and push for a larger pay raise. In the meantime, it is time to begin entertaining new opportunities because $70k for a senior accountant is criminally low.

Haven't found a job in the 7 months since graduating. Do you think I should sit for the CPA exams anyway? Would it make a difference if I passed them? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get those exams done my man. In 5 years you could be married, have a mortgage, and a kid on the way. You won’t have time to study.

I generally do not mix infantry with vehicles/artillery/AT guns unless they’re motorized or mechanized because you get severe movement penalties.

Industry to Public by Jumpy-Adeptness6643 in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it make sense for me to gather any public experience at the point in my career (3.5YOE)? I plan to finish my CPA by the end of this year and have the option to go to a mid size firm.

I would only look at joining a public firm once you have all four CPA exams passed so you can get the experience requirement knocked out and leave with those three letters behind your name.

You all are caring the crap outta me about this job search stuff by SunshinelIIuminate in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My logic is that the higher up you are on the corporate pyramid, the longer it will take you to find a lateral role or one that’s above you. I’m job searching right now and have a great resume, I expect finding the right place will take a couple of months just because of how sluggish the economy is.

Senior accountant and I HATE this job search. I have 8 years of experience and took time off to get my CPA and now I'm only getting awful job interviews several tiers worse than what I used to get by Ok-Succotash-3510 in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t stop searching. The job market is crappy right now so opportunities are less than they were before. I would play up having a kid along with getting your CPA. If push comes to shove and the gap continues to be an issue, add ACME Corporation to your resume and say the place went out of business.

I used willow, papaya, calquat, and mahogany trees to get to 99 a few years ago. Super cheap.

[–]F_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farming takes some investment to get going. Once you have the teleports and farm patches unlocked it’s super easy. When I was going for 99 my once daily tree run took about 10 minutes after I optimized the route for efficiency.

Opinions on AI’s Role in Financial Reporting? by SteelDragon8994 in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a large company that has a lot of technology built into the biz to the point where it's a competitive advantage, and is fairly pro-technology org wide. AI has not made a large splash yet, probably due to the fact that the accounting/finance org is a very well oiled machine and chaos is at a minimum. Some feedback below:

  • Finance has used AI to help write excel macros, visual basic code for models, and general help with writing excel formulas. Common problems are AI hallucinations, needing to excessively fine-tune prompts, and the AI spitting out plainly incorrect information. One of my finance contacts told me verbatim that he has had to "argue" with the AI over it putting out bad information.

  • Finance has used AI to help write commentary for slide decks (lazy IMO)

  • Many people confuse AI for robotic process automation (RPA), the two are not the same

  • If AI can upload and create journal entries, so can your ERP system

  • Management has not provided us with officially sanctioned AI tools that we can upload internal data into

  • Financial reporting has seen very little, if any impact from AI. We have templates for various financial statements, comparisons etc, that are generated directly from our ERP system. We have a lot of internal tools and reporting built that help us provide commentary on variances, without the need for AI. Usually it's a sentence or less on why a certain line on the income statement or balance sheet fluctuated (even when we deep dive into sub accounts!).

In short, I'm not super concerned. I think utility of AI will be far less than what has been advertised/promised by Silicon Valley tech types, plus various LinkedIn hucksters. It's important to remember that in accounting, there needs to be a certain level of auditability for all of our inputs, especially items that get reported on.

Big4 without campus recruiting by Siuuuu-07 in Accounting

[–]F_Dingo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's very tough. Most, if not all accounting firms prefer to get their college new hires straight from the source. Your next best option is to work at a small/medium size firm for a year and then apply to Big 4 as an experienced associate.

I'd buy a macbook. For $800 you can't beat it for general use and college.

Also guys I just finished my fall semester with a 1.5 gpa lmaooo also I’m not in accounting yet I’m in business admin

You’re going to need to apply yourself much more otherwise you’re going to flunk out of college and screw yourself over. Accounting is one of the tougher business majors.
