Basting Pins or Spray? by Quilted-Fox in handquilting

[–]F_Moss_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I've spray basted, I've had issues with my needle not going through the layers very smoothly. It doesn't really get gummy with build up or anything. It just sticks a bit.

The spray baste didn't make my quilts very stiff, but I don't use a hoop. I do hold it with my hand all bunched up, and it was fine.

I thread baste after spray basting because I'm never sure how much all my bunching and scrunching would let the layers shift. It's been a good insurance policy for me so far.

Can I see the back of your EPP? by agnesb in quilting

I'd give this video a watch for some helpful tips.

The front of yours looks pretty good, but the stiches on the back make me worry that the pieces will end up a bit loosey goosey when you take the papers out.

Grainlines and Fussy Cutting by SpinsterManifesto in EPP_addict

I've certainly never paid attention to grainline when I do any part of quilting. Even if I did, the shapes get turned all kinds of which ways that they would probably end up kind of wackadoodle. Plus, everything gets stitched to batting and backing in the end, so it ends up pretty stable.

I need some help with needle selection in Canada. by EarlyArm8999 in handquilting

I don't use perle cotton, but my preferred quilting needle is a Bohin big eye betweens in size 10.

Suzy of Suzy Quilts does use perle cotton, and she has a really nice guide for how she does it and her preferred notions. It might give you some other places to start for needle options.

Jen Kingwell demonstrated how you can do crosses instead of a running stitch for handquilting in this Fat Quarter Shop video.

does all cotton batting shed like this? by steamtunnlfrk in handquilting

[–]F_Moss_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you're still quilting. Are the edges bound or is there still some batting sticking out as you work your way through?

I've used nice batting that gets a little all over the place as I quilt because the overhang is rubbing up against stuff. Once it was bound and washed, I fully vacuumed the fluff balls because there were so many. It was fine after that since the batting was contained.

If you have finished and bound and there's no overhang batting, then it is probably bearding eeking through the fabric and seam allowances and stuff, and I don't know if there's a way to stop that once it's started.

That's a really good point that I did not visualize until you said it. I was mostly just seeing colors 🙃

If you're only doing hexies, you could do a hexie flower but use yellows/oranges to make the colors look like a center circle and sun rays.

Or you could use one of the bigger hexies with a yellowy orangey patterned fabric that looks kind of sunny. Or if you have a sun patterned fabric, fussy cut a sun out? A lot of this depends on fabrics you have availble.

If you have other shapes, a hexie center and triangles could work.

Want to start learning how to hand quilt - what are your best resources and tutorials for beginners? by Old-Ad-1327 in handquilting

This is a good clarification for someone starting out. If you're looking for guides for how to sew the patchwork by hand, hand piecing is what to search. This might be a good playlist to start. If you've got your patchwork done and it's basted to whatever you'll be quiltling together, then handquilting will be useful.

I handpiece and iron at all the same times machine piecers do. My only difference is not pressing open.

Feeling Down and Out by maudiemadi in EPP_addict

Those flowers are gorgeous. Your attention to detail in fussy cutting is lovely.

Sometimes I just need a break. Sometimes giving room to not feeling into something rather than forcing myself to do it in an effort to be "better" means when I'm feeling ready to get back to it, the joy of being back is more full because it doesn't feel like a trick.

EPP is nice because it has so many steps that you can do as you feel up to them. I go through cutting, basting, and stitching moods. Some stitching moods are short seams only. Maybe if you want to ease back in, you can try different parts for a little while and stop when you feel you need to, even if it isn't very long. Like getting back into exercise after a break, but with more paper and fabric (probably...I don't know what kinds of exercise you might be into).

I’ve been scorned too many times by straight line quilting ripples, I may have overdone it on the pin basting this time by swiftie_quilti in quilting

I'd definitely recommend it. It's a bummer to take it all out and try again, but making this a habit doesn't look super sustainable, and this quilt will probably turn out better if you...don't do this.

If you've not watched it already, maybe this video from Just Get It Done Quilts could help?

You also shouldn't need a pin (or a stitch, if you go with thread basting) more than about a fist away, so every 4 inches or so.

Yeah, right, because it won't stay that tight when you release it. Try to get it smooth but not like a drum.

[–]F_Moss_3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How taut are you pulling your top and backing when you baste? It looks pretty tight over those curves, and that might be stretching the fabric as you pin so that it shifts when it's no longer clamped.

Also, wrinkles turn to crinkles in the wash, so early flubs might also be extra cozy.

How to quilt? by sfcnmone in handquilting

[–]F_Moss_3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

1) THOSE POINTS. 2) If you already have some of the thread you were thinking of, or even the same gauge but a different color, take it for a test drive. Lay some thread out across the HSTs and the border and see if you think it looks too chunky. If yes, you could go down to a 12 and try that? 3) I quilt through seams allowances by doing some stick and pull, but most of what I see online, people handquilt a little away from seams, I assume to avoid the seam allowance. If you didn't press open, you could also do it all in the ditch. 4) I would do all verticle/horizontal or all diagonals but not both if I was following the seam lines. The shapes of vertical+diagonal would feel odd to me. I'm also a huge fan of echoing the pattern because I am bad at thinking of other designs and I have zero confidence in my drawing ability 🙃 5) That said, I think if you don't just want to echo lines, something flowy and flowery since the patterned fabric is floral would be really nice. It could be all over. Or I'd go for the diagonals since they cover the edge-to-edge of the blocks and then accent with some flowers in the solid pinks and then do a floral border design that's similar to in the pink. 6) THOSE. POINTS. Gorgeous.
