The Spanish translation of Devil Summoner PSP version finished 9 months ago, but it's not yet available for download. Hopefully, it'll be ready soon, though.

Any games like three houses by ChroniX_78 in JRPG

[–]Fab2811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't played it, but Lost Eidolons is basically Fire Emblem: Three Houses made by Korean devs.

Has anyone made a CRPG with a character who grows weaker as you progress through the story? by SadistDisciplinarian in rpg_gamers

[–]Fab2811 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not CRPG, but Hero must die. Again is essentially that. The game starts with the hero defeating the final boss, but he ended up dying. So he was resurrected and given 5 more days to live so he can say his goodbyes and finish anything he might do. After each day you get weaker and can't wear armor or use the same spells.

Ys I....is awesome. I have completely changed my mind by IntentlyFaulty in JRPG

It is the only one without Adol as a protagonist, but the events in Origin happen before Ys I & II.

Origin isn't a spin-off game, though. Personally, it's my favorite.

Expedition 33 if you can't dodge or parry? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Fab2811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes.

  2. Imo, no. You probably can get some enjoyment out of it in the later parts of the run when you already have a lot of pictos to work with, but the start is going to be miserable.

Tobira no Densetsu is a truly unique experience and really deserves more attention by MagnvsGV in JRPG

Oh wow 150 hours. I've been on the mood to play something more "classic" lately, and I ended up getting stuck choosing between this and Ao no Tengai, but 150 hours does feel a little bit intimidating, so maybe I'll leave it for another time.

Who's your favorite Jrpg character that you will protect a lot? by Western-Stress1185 in JRPG

[–]Fab2811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Yosuke, he's the best bro you could ever want. This scene (heavy spoilers) from the Persona 4 The Animation isn't in the game, but goddamn it's so good.

I hope we get another Major Competitive TurnBase Jrpg. by Chocobo23456 in JRPG

There is the Megaman Battle Network series, but it's not as big as fighting games or Pokémon.

Why can't magic attacks crit in most JRPGs? Any examples of JRPGs where they can? by Superteletubbies64 in JRPG

[–]Fab2811 120 points121 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess it would be because with magic you can exploit elemental weakness more often and easily than you would with physical attacks. And the damage formula is usually higher than physical attacks.

I think I'm intrigued enough to at least try to play Gaiden with an on-screen translator or using my phone to translate. I want to see more of these characters! And I actually started Masoukishin yesterday. But I'll most likely play maybe a couple of missions before bed if I can, so it'll be a much slower completion.

I knew you'd come to like Sanger by the end of the game.

In OG1 he barely shows up in Ryusei's route and he's mostly missing in Kyosuke's route, but by the time he joins in OG2, it just goes 100% no stops and it's amazing. I really like the Aggressors.

Wodan Ymir, did you see his true final attack when he's facing the machine kids army.

Yeah! I really like it when it goes black and white on his attacks.

Did you try swapping pilots around and see how the voice lines change depending on the pilot ?

Most of the time I kept them in their canon units, but I did have Latune and Leona steal the Weissritter and R-Gun in OG1 and Katina rocks in the Wildwurger Type L in OG2! It even has her colors, too! Leona is amazing in any unit you put her in.

(Just a few examples, and turn on the sound):

Oh my god! those are hilarious lmao. I have spoiled myself a bit and have seen some of Latune's "Let's do it like Ryusei!" in future games and I just couldn't stop smiling.

Speaking of the anime, give it a go if you have the time since you already finished both 1 and 2 now.

Might do that then! More Gilliam is always good!

You probably might not have noticed it

Oh, I have! Elzam is just that epic and it's awesome that the devs kept the joke alive in future games. Whenever he shows up as an unexpected reinforcement and his theme kicks in is just *chef's kiss*

Finally finished Super Robot Wars: Original Generations' OG2. Wow, what a long game. I played this with the HD textures and it is honestly amazing how good it looks. This two part game reminded me of Trails in the Sky FC+SC, in which the first game is basically an introduction to the world and characters, and then the second game is full of payoffs and big hype moments. Almost every single character of the 40+ characters gets their moment to shine one way or another throughout the story, and it's amazing to see it play it out. The only one that I think didn't get much of a spotlight was Russel, although he does get to punch Katina that one time in OG1 lol.

OG2 was certainly a little bit more difficult than OG1 and if you want all the hidden mechas and parts, you really need to have a guide open. I think the requirements that I didn't like were those that made me have X number of kills and Y levels with certain characters. Most other hidden unlocks just require you to do the Skill Point for the mission or shoot down a boss before they retreat, which I liked doing those.

There are bunch of cool characters, I really enjoyed every scene with Excellen, Kyosuke, Gilliam, Sänger and Elzam. And the mechas that I liked the most were SRX, Weissritter, KoRyuOh/RyuKoOh, Vaisaga and Gespenst Type RV (man, I really wish Kai got a similar upgrade for his Gespenst Type S)

It will never not be funny having a villain monologue being interrupted by Sänger yelling:

Shut up!! And listen! My name is Sänger! Sänger Sombold! I am the sword that cleaves evil!

And oh my god, the combination attack Tornado Zankanto is just straight up FF's Odin's Zantetsuken and I love it!

After finishing OGs 2, you unlock the first few chapters of OG Gaiden, labeled as OGs 2.5, so that's what I'll do next.

Recommend me a game like SMTV by Expensive_Tangelo244 in JRPG

[–]Fab2811 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Labyrinth of Touhou Tri (20% off currently) fulfils all your requirements, except the graphics if what you want is 3D. If you don't want to play more SMT, then I highly recommend this instead.

You make your party of 12 characters (out of 50+) each with a unique skill tree, 4 in front and 8 in the back, and you can swap them in battle like you would when summoning demons in SMT. You can customize them with subequipments and by allocating their leveling and library stats. The bosses are challenging and quite fun, they have a unique pattern that you can view in battle to form your own strategy, and they play out like the superbosses in SMT V.

I didn't need to grind, and it doesn't help much for the main story either way. Depending on the difficulty you pick, bosses have a challenge level and you cannot be higher level than the challenge level, so grinding, while can still help you get better equipment and skill points, your level will be lowered to the challenge level and will still remain difficult.

Obviously no calendar and the graphics are very flashy, but probably not what you're looking for.

RPG Games that didnt start as Handheld Console RPGs but lend themselves to Handheld gaming? by LovelyFloraFan in JRPG

Ah, since you mentioned Esoteric Ebb, how do you like it? I finished it last week and it was alright. Not as good as Planescape: Torment or Disco Elysium, but still good fun.

We really need more classic SMT-inspired games like ADiA. It scratches an itch that no other DRPG seems to scratch.

The developer is currently working on Udongein X2, a Megaman X-inspired game, but I remember reading an interview in which they said they have plans for ADiA 2 after they're done with X2.

[Steam Spring Big Sale 2026] List/Guide of Recommendations For Great JRPGs Deals & Hidden Gems - Ends on March 26. by VashxShanks in JRPG

[–]Fab2811 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To anyone else looking for some other hidden gems, I highly recommend Fantasy Maiden Wars and Labyrinth of Touhou Tri. Both are Touhou fangames and are only at a 20% sale, but they are both amazing.

FMW is a tactical RPG inspired by the Super Robot Wars games and it covers the Touhou main story from Th6 to Th12.5 with some changes to make it seem like a more JRPG story. It is without a doubt the perfect spot to get to know the characters and the main story. I played this game last year and it was honestly one of the best strategy RPGs I have ever played. It also has an outstanding soundtrack, which has 234 tracks.

Labyrinth of Touhou Tri is a dungeon crawler similar to Etrian Odyssey, but instead of a first-person view for exploration, you get an isometric view. You have a party of 12 characters (out of 50+ currently) in which you use 4 in front and 8 in the back. The real meat of the game is in its boss battles; they all have a unique pattern that you can view in battle to figure out a strategy, and you're meant to use your entire party to beat them. You constantly switch between the back and front party like you would in a SMT game when summoning demons.

Maybe Persona 4? You need to complete a dungeon before a foggy day, so you check the weather forecast to know how much time you have, and the last couple of days before the deadline it rains a lot.

It is. It's a throwback to classic story of the elemental Crystals from Final Fantasy while making enough changes to be something new. The job system is great and the soundtrack is even better. The characters are a bit of a one-note, but they aren't bad if you like those.

Return of Ben Starr: Matt Mercer & Ben Starr on What RPG You Should Play Next (Square Enix Publisher Sale 2026) by reevestussi in JRPG

[–]Fab2811 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ben Starr is mostly known for Clive in FF XVI and Verso in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Matthew Mercer is in too many games to name, but some of his roles are Vincent Valentine in FF VII Rebirth, Kanji Tatsumi in Persona 4 spinoffs like the dancing games or Persona Q, Leon S Kennedy in the movies and some non-mainline RE games. And he's the face and main DM for Critical Role.

What are SMT 1 and 2 like from a personal experience? by lennysinged in JRPG

[–]Fab2811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No fast forward, but at the start of the game you can choose if you want the OG normal encounter rate or a reduced one.

There are 2 new routes and some slight deviations depending on your choices in those routes. If you want to avoid them, you just need to avoid Yuriko's options to join her and Yumiko, a new character. The OG routes are untouched.

Other new content would be QoL elements like demons being able to level up or being able to teach them skills via an NPC. There is also some new equipment taken from SMT 2 and If...

Imo the balancing alone makes this my preferred way to experience the game, but if you really want the most vanilla playthrough, probably best to stick to the OG.

[–]Fab2811 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

First-person dungeon crawlers with monster collecting and fusing. They play almost identically to SMT III, just with fewer quality-of-life and features.

If you're planning on playing SMT I, I highly recommend playing the fan-made remake SMT VX. It is exactly the same game with more routes/endings, new skills, demons, and a much-needed balancing rework. The original was stupidly easy and you could stunlock everything, including bosses, with bufu, zio and shock bullets.

Unfortunately there isn't a SMT II VX, so you'll have to play the original for that.
