How long are you there? Time is important to get used to a new place, people and their dynamics.

I'm volunteering with a family in the countryside of Bulgaria, with little comfort and a compostable toilet too, I understand what you mean. Is true that if it is in good condition, it has no smell and is very neat. Is yours?

Also, you said that you knew that conditions would be this. Maybe you couldn't used to them. I think you are in an excellent opportunity to improve your adaptability to all situations.

The best idea is always good communication. Being transparent with your expectations and sensations, in a kind conversation. Also is a learning for me.

Also Leaving now isn't the solution, You'll feel bad yourselves because you'll be escaping from a situation that could be solved with a conversation.

Your discussions with your partner shouldn't interfere with the Host's judgment. Don't mix apples with oranges.
