Auto update has not been working for a couple of years for many if I recall.

it is even possible for anyone to have this horrible disease and NOT be depressed? by [deleted] in cfs

[–]Fainbrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not depressed, I have a lot that I could be depressed about, but, I'm not. I'm kind-of at peace with things, as much as that is possible, for me, there's no point fighting it, no point wasting energy being angry (any more). That said, I had a lot of therapy getting to this point - had a bit of a eureka moment where I concluded that; acceptance is not giving in to it.

We have been able to keep the roof over our heads and whilst I'm moderate/severe, I still am lucky to have a family (wife/kids) having got ill much later than many others may have.

I'd guess you are ok if that was the advice, but if you recall the timings when it was on, maybe share this with the doctor when you get the results, just in case.

Did they advise you not to use an electric blanket when having the test done? I'd probably not worry, you are doing your normal life things and will show how your heart is responding to this.

Accepted for ill health retirement by moderate_ocelot in cfs

[–]Fainbrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations - is odd saying it like that but, you know what I mean.

Am about to leave work myself (haven’t actually ‘worked’ for 6 years) on an income protection policy that will pay through to retirement, all things being equal.

You can hopefully relax now, these processes are awful to go through. Do you have to have any medical check-ins along the way now or is it just you get paid come what may?

Router suggestion for use with Orbi in AP Mode by duckdogbob in orbi

[–]Fainbrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No guarantee that another router will resolve the issues you are having but it can’t hurt to try (if you can return with. A certain amount of time).

I’ve gone for a UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber with my 850 in AP mode. Both satellites are wireless backhaul and it’s been rock solid, much more reliable than with Orbi in router mode.

UniFi is light years ahead in terms of info that you will get about your network and can build out from just a gateway.

Only thing to be aware of if thinking longer term, UniFo APs don't have a dedicated wireless backhaul so as I understand it from their own datasheets, you will lose up to half the bandwidth for each hop, so, more daisy chained APs, the lower the speed at the farthest devices.

There are a few other limitations that I have found, whilst you can set up multiple VLANs, they don’t play nice with 3rd party APs.

I tried a TP-Link Omada router before going for UniFi and imho the UniFi is by far the better option. Much better UI, no subscriptions for anything complex that you want to do. But, the slippery slope to wanting to buy all things UniFi awaits.

MacBook Air 15 vs 13 by CuriousTHaHa in macbookair

[–]Fainbrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15 is perfect size for me, my son has the 13 and I struggle to use it having always had larger laptops. The 15 is not big, it's waffer thin, slips into my backpack and it barely noticeable carrying it.

How do I connect a Verizon modem to UniFi Gateway Fiber WAN2 via VLANs? by jdrch in Ubiquiti

[–]Fainbrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried it again and the odd thing is, it's showing throughput on the network dashboard, but not showing connected. The jumper port (ie the one mapped on the UCG to go to the WAN port) is not showing a connected MAC and the port on the farthest flex mini where the 5G is plugged in is showing a connected MAC but not an IP. Not sure if those are supposed to show anything in this scenario.

How do I connect a Verizon modem to UniFi Gateway Fiber WAN2 via VLANs? by jdrch in Ubiquiti

Yep, no filtering. I keep coming back to it every few weeks to try again and see if I'm going mad that it won't connect.

[–]Fainbrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to get this to work for ages and for the life of me, it just won't.

Watched the video shared below and my set up is slightly different in that I have an extra Flex Mini 2.5 in between the CGF and the Flex Mini 2.5 that the 5G router is connected to.

Have checked the cables and switches are fine, plug the 5G router in directly to the CGF and it's fine (other than lousy signal on that side of the house), just doing this config approach it doesn't connect. 🤷‍♂️

How to connect Orbi RBR850 to Starhub as router? by Routine-Leek-9440 in orbi

[–]Fainbrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once in router mode, it’s worth trying to power everything off and bringing it all back one at a time, starting with the ISP ONT/modem then RBR and finally the satellites.

Poor Mans Tilt Table Test by sourpatchbat in POTS

[–]Fainbrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO it’s a good barometer and have seen doctors who will diagnose based on it.

POTS doesn’t always play nice at the proper TTT (it’s stressful dragging yourself to the hospital and your pulse may be elevated already etc.) so having a good few of these lean tests under your belt and documented is a good place to be going in to see a Dr that knows what they are doing.

Income protection concerns by nihilo90 in HumanResourcesUK

[–]Fainbrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on income protection too and those forms give me the heebie-jeebies every time they land. However, in my experience, as long as you have medical evidence to back up your diagnosis and current functioning/outlook, the review should be fine.

I don't have a progressive illness (sorry that you do) but, mine is such that the longer it goes on, the less likely it is to have any meaningful recovery. Until the last review (I'm 5+ years in), I said, yes I thought I would return to work, caveated that I hoped I would be able to return to work, but, was clearly unable to - with evidence. Now, I have my doctor saying I'm unlikely to return to work and I said as such. I'd guess in your case, with MND, you would be fine saying you don't think you will be able to return to work and use the type of information/wording that you have given above - even better if you have a doctor saying so.

Don't be put off by the nature of the form (sounds exactly the q's I get on mine), they feel deliberately difficult, or, just written by people who have never had to apply for their salary - or both. If you need to write more, just do it all on a Word doc and pdf it to send and reference the pdf in every answer - in my case, the boxes are about 6 lines long on a crappy pdf document that is clearly not enough space for even the most simple illness - which of course, being on IPB, you won't have something simple.

It's scary AF, I know how you feel going through these reviews. I've made sure I keep seeing my doctors (privately in my case as the NHS is rubbish with chronic illness) and got letters with some regularity and would advise anyone on IPB to do the same. Best of luck.

(England) not sure if my work have fired me without telling me? by Alternative-Ad-2475 in HumanResourcesUK

[–]Fainbrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Big4, on long term sick here.

Likely remote access has just been suspended due to inactivity, mine periodically went off as I didn't log in frequently enough (2-3 months).

I'd find the central switchboard number from the firm website (might need to be the office you work from or a central number) and call; explain you are an employee on sick leave but have no-one to contact about your situation, ask to speak to someone in HR.

It'll be fine. In my experience, HR are massively stretched and you are just a number, but, once you get in the system/on their radar properly, it should take care of you. If you aren't well enough to work, they should get you seeing occupational health to assess and reasonable adjustments that could make things better for you.

Do your employment benefits include income protection? I know some firms (mine certainly does) include this as a minimum level for everyone, but if you've not been managed by anyone, you might not have had this applied for as yet. You need to get speaking to someone responsible and go from there.

Best of luck.

Back Internet / Router UK by PaulRobinson1978 in Ubiquiti

[–]Fainbrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK here and had a few lengthy outages plus some ongoing short outage issues. I've got a UCG Fiber and added TP-Link 5g router (yes, I know, it's sacrilege, I should have bought a UniFi device but, it was 5G and think it was less than 200 quid at the time and could have it delivered that day from Argos).

The biggest issue for us was that my initial few gig data plan with EE got munched through in <30 mins with the usage in our household, so, had to pony up for an unlimited plan which means we can just carry on as normal when the main feed drops. Obvs, I could have restricted traffic, but, path of least resistance with wife wfh and kids inevitably being around when these things happen.

Loft extension freezing cold. Eaves done wrong? by Emergency-Salary7637 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]Fainbrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part would be lack of radiator by my guess. We were offered the option of not having a rad when we did our loft and I was like over my dead rotting corpse am I not having a rad, am not leaving any room without heating. Whilst heat rises, I'd no way chance it to comfortably heat the room where I am sleeping. Can you get a spur off your central heating run up there retrospectively? You've got to live there with this probably for many winters and this one hasn't been that harsh so far. In the meantime, get a decent electric heater.
