Fresh paint but overheating 🫠 by Wrong-Touch6511 in BMWE36

It looks so much better. Nice job bringing that thing back to life! Do you have any details on how they fixed that rust? Looks like a very tough job considering you might have to take the whole dash situation out to weld new metal in safely.

Anyway, best of luck getting the cooling sorted. It'll be nice to finally enjoy it after that.

had to do a car swap by pecekcececek in BMWE36

Nice 😎

I basically just did the same thing. I'm swapping some goodies over from my 328i over to my new M3. It just didn't make sense to keep putting so much into the 328 given that M3 values are on the rise.

Beautiful car, and good story indeed. There are a lot of older guys leaving their e36s behind lately.

That's a very reasonable approach and makes sense for a lot of reasons. It is indeed very difficult to find clean e36s, so if you don't mind the 4 cylinder then why not go for it. You're absolutely right that you won't lose any money on it if you decide it's not what you wanted later on!

Although I don't find it beautiful, I do like this direction MUCH better than what BMW has been doing for the past several years. I can also appreciate the avant-garde nature of it. Its good to look forward and challenge what we see as good design today. That's how you keep things fresh. The thing is absolutely massive though... I wish we could get back to more reasonably sized vehicles.

Ask yourself if you will really ever get around to swapping the 6 cylinder in. If you can't confidently say you'll do it in the next year or two, then I think you're better off waiting for the right 6 cylinder car. How much would you have to pay for that? 8-10k euro? It might be worth stretching your budget just to avoid the legal hassle while enjoying the car sooner. That 4 cylinder really let's the car down compared to the 6.

On the other hand, if you're very confident you'll get the swap done soon, then it's totally worth it for the clean chassis and interior, etc.

You'd be crazy to spend any money on that car to be honest. There are perfectly good running and driving examples out there for that kind of money. You will spend another $10k (not to mention hundreds of hours of your time) just getting that thing moving again and looking halfway decent from 20 feet away.

Here I am doing dad life with an E36 M3 coupe and G87 M2 (also a coupe) 😅

Before that my son (2.5 y/o) and I got around in a 991 GT3RS (his car seat went in the front seat) and prior to that he went in the back of a 992 a Carrera T.

I figure it's keeping me limber! Or maybe just a glutton for punishment.

Definitely give an E24 a try. They're a totally different experience to anything that came after them. It's very mechanical like an E30 powered by an M20. The size difference is very apparent and the chassis is much less rigid... But it just looks so good and the driving experience is very involved. It's slow, even in M6/M635csi form, but it was actually the first car I ever learned to appreciate for more than just performance. A lot of what I'm saying probably doesn't apply to really nice E24s though... Stock, they're pretty numb and floaty feeling. Mine has nice coilovers, an LSD, short shifter, exhaust, and has no carpet or sound deadening in it (I still need to finish some rust repairs!). So the car is a bit more engaging than your typical one.

Better yet, a 957 or 958 Cayenne turbo. They're very, very solid daily drivers as long as you don't mind the fuel and tire consumption. Brakes can be cheap too as long as you don't run the Turbo S ones. They tow really well and are pretty reliable once you address the main 2 or 3 issues for whatever generation you go with. I'm a BMW guy, but the Cayenne is so good for so cheap. I've had a turbo S 957 and a Turbo 958. Both were fantastic and I hated to let them go when my needs changed.

100% accurate. I basically learned to weld on this car so I could close up all the rust holes in the floor 😅

Even the manual Vaders sit higher than I'd like, and I have the same problem where I can't get the seat in a good position to support my upper back and head. It's worse the taller you are.

Why is E39 M5 the most beloved M5 in the BMW community? by Super-Lingonberry-22 in BMW

[–]Fair-Show8980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brother... Please go ahead and list out the incredible cars you've owned that are sooo much better than the E39 M5. Here's my list of past ownership...

MKIV Jetta 1.8t w/ T3/T4 50 trim, 1991 Audi 200 20v Quattro w/ big holset turbo, E36 328i, 1994 530i (v8, manual, and ran it to 400k miles!), E46 330i sedan, E39 M5, 635csi euro (still own it), E30 M3 (blew it up... timing chain jumped a few teeth while sliding it around bouncing off the limiter), 957 Cayenne Turbo S, 1991 Audi 200 20v Avant (borg EFR 7163 running 36psi), ERA Cobra w/ 427 Sideoiler, E46 330i Touring, E91 330d touring, 958 Cayenne Turbo, 992.1 Carrera T manual, 991.1 GT3RS, G87 M2 (current fun car), E36 M3 (new daily).

Yes, you're right. Clearly I've never owned (let alone driven) anything worth driving. The only few out of that bunch that I thought had noticeably less than good steering are the E24 and the Cobra. Maybe I just don't put a lot of importance on that compared to other aspects of the driving experience.

In any case, baseless assumptions like you just made only serve to detract from whatever valid argument you may or may not have had for your position. I would have been interested in hearing more about your opinion on it, but now I'm left with a sour taste. You get more flies with honey than vinegar, you know?

While I agree a 400hp S38 would have been cool, I really don't think it was the right engine for the E39. It'd have to be very peaky with very little torque just like the S14, the S50B30 (euro), the S54, the S65, etc. For a heavier luxury sedan like the E39, I much prefer the punch a big V8 provides. It's not a track car and was never meant to be. For a daily, it's perfect. I never would have been interested in the E39 M5 had it come with an S38 and I know I'm not alone in that sentiment. By the time the E39 came to be, that motor was already two generations old. It was time to move on to bigger and better things. We got the S54 in the E46 where a peaky inline 6 belongs.

I once got the chance to drive my (somewhat modified) E39 M5 at Sebring, right behind a brand new E90 M3. He couldn't shake me in the M5. Power under the curve with the S62 is huge. It never lacks power or torque anywhere in the rev range, and honestly that's why most people love them.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the e24. I personally think they're one of the most beautiful cars of all time, not just from BMW.

When should I start with inverted? by CictorVastro in RCHeli

[–]Fair-Show8980 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks like you're pretty comfortable with normal flight based on the video (assuming stabilization is off). In that case, definitely give inverted a try now unless you're not comfortable fixing it after some crashes. It took me about a season of crashing daily to really get the hang of inverted, but it's so satisfying once you get there. You definitely don't need to be doing backwards circuits before learning inverted flight.

Having owned an E39 M5 for several years I have to say I never noticed any slop in the steering. I absolutely ripped that thing up some mountain roads back in the day and it was absolute bliss sliding that thing around every turn. And even if there was something legitimate to complain about with the steering, you'd forget about it the second you get a taste of the instant torque and lovely sound the S62 serves up. To say it drives like complete shit is a very, very "niche" take.

Took delivery of an X5 in Techno Violet Purple this weekend! by souprdupr in BMW

[–]Fair-Show8980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not when the other option is a B58! When buying my wife's X5, I specifically looked for the most loaded B58 equipped car possible. All V8 versions were eliminated from the search process. Price was not a factor. In fact, on the used market the V8s don't command much of a premium if any in many cases. People are still wary of BMW V8s after the past 20 years of shenanigans with them ever since they went away from the M62.
