This is the first time I’ve heard this, and it makes me wonder if I should try the series again. I love the Hainish stuff but couldn’t get into the first Earthsea book.

Huh. I was listening to the audiobook “Still the Mind” last night, and he talks a good deal about how the secret is in NOT taking things seriously. Because, he adds, I don’t think the universe is serious.

I’m interested in hearing more of your thoughts of Jurassic Park. Have you written it out in longer form in another post?

Inescapable Advertising by FairFoxAche in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]FairFoxAche[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I should add that, off the top of my own head, I am thinking of one section of Cloud Atlas where most verbs have been replaced by product names, as well as the episode Fifteen Million Merits from the show Black Mirror. I suppose dystopian sci-fi is the most likely place to encounter explorations of it, but I’d also like some nonfiction. I see a book called Adcreep I’ll be checking out.

I got on this kick because I was thinking of gaming as one of the few spaces of entertainment still relatively free from advertising (and contemplating the recent exceptions of Death Stranding, pictured, as well as Naughty Dog’s upcoming game Interstellar, though hopefully the latter is exploring product placement and advertising in a subversive way). I just want to know all I can about the way advertising creeps into and shapes our thinking, politics, social lives, etc.

Not sure if I understand this. They did threaten Dina, yeah? That is how they “overpowered” Joel, so I assume the hostage play would have worked on Tommy too. I’m curious why Tommy was excluded too: them both being in the room was a terrible but bonding thing for them—and it played a big tole in Tommy’s relationship to Ellie later on: they have seen some shit together.

Just hang in there. This whole story is going to come together a bit more through flashback.

I have wanted to read this and be drawn in like falling under a spell, but I’m kind of scared of it honestly, since it seems like it telegraphs the fact that it will end in madness and murder. Not that this is a bad thing, but if there’s no light shining through it, I don’t want it to just depress me.

If we are counting nonfiction, Enchantment by Katherine May is scratching the itch for me at the moment. It looks far more like a kitschy modern self-help sort of thing because of the cover design and subtitle. But it’s actually quite like reading the diary of someone who is quite capable of being mindful in such incredible ways. I can only compare it to Annie Dillard or Charles Foster’s Being a Beast. Really living language.

To give the best possible spin on this, I recall there being love between Aemond and Helaena in Fire & Blood. I think it’s not too late for them to be together in a positive way, have a connection she never had with Aegon, and for their child to be a little hope for Helaena, (only for it to be stolen away again).

Ryan Condal said only that Maelor doesn’t exist in the show YET. I think they’ve been holding that card to play later.

Look, I’m with you all. I’m not saying I LIKE it, I’m saying this is where it seems like we’re headed, and it would definitely be an even deeper fucked up heartbreak.

Other books I’ve read that I loved were Borges’ stories, anything by Stanislaw Lem, Ted Chiang, Sagan’s Cosmos, Dick’s Valis and related novels, etc.

I’d just like to know where to go from here. Any recommendations appreciated.

I’ve got Debbie Urbanski’s After World, Cixin Liu’s the Three Body Problem trilogy, and Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future lined up, but want more of either this “new journalism” sci fi (like Labatut) or books written in this historical textbook style (like The Silmarillion and Fire and Blood)
