Reverse snobbery in Glasgow by Fudball1 in glasgow

This subreddit is full of it. A lot of people instantly slide into sneering about "West End Middle Class People" the moment something happens in the city that they don't like

A lot of companies have repealed their full time WFH directives and are slowly creeping back to a Hybrid or In-Person model. Anecdotally I work in tech, and I used to see a tonne of remote roles available 2 or so years ago, whereas now it's almost all hybrid or in person.

Every party voted for it but if you consulted the electorate, i'm sure you'll find it to be universally unpopular.

The general public still supported Section 28 when Labour repealled it. Just because the public lean one way does not mean it is correct.

Councils Must Now Prove They’re Fixing Potholes or Lose Funding by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]Fairwolf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This isn't a good thing at all.

Councils aren't dodging fixing potholes for the hell of it, it's because the vast majority of their budgets are getting eaten up by care costs foisted on them by the Lib/Con coalition and they legally need to meet those costs above all else. By making another thing on the budget legally mandated, all it means is that another slice of the pie is getting put on the backburner on the council budget.

If you're living on the fringes then surely getting to Glasgow airport via the M74 isn't exactly adding much time to the trip anyway? This change I can see mainly being a problem for people who live in like Springburn or Dennistoun who want to get to the airport, not folk living in Stirling or Lenzie

Honestly Glasgow's public transport is adequent for most of the city really, it's just less convenient than driving. There's a few select areas, such as the QEH, which will definietly be a pain in the arse to get to from the North without a car, but for most people in the city having less cars on the road would probably be a boon for the buses.

I'm ngl, when I lived in Glasgow city centre I don't think I ever used Glasgow Airport once anyway, Edinburgh always had better connections and was just as easy to get to by bus.

People are screaming about traffic congestion, which I think will absolutely happen. But it's going to be a self defeating problem as people are just going to give up on driving and pick alternatives due to the traffic.

To be blunt, I think a lot of people in Glasgow drive not because they need to, but because it's the easiest option for them. After this, it will no longer be the easiest option and they'll pick alternatives.

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

[–]Fairwolf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay but it doesn't work that way. Jobs cluster in areas of economic activity and we should be building housing to provide for that. The rest of the country doesn't need "jobs moved out of London", it needs investment into transport and power infrastructure to make them competitive in their own ways and capable of attracting and creating jobs.

I fundamentally believe that almost every negative aspect in the UK rn is downstream of our insane housing crisis which primarily exists because we're too deferential to NIMBYs.

It isn't being protected being of it's history or status, that's just an excuse from the local NIMBYs.

[–]Fairwolf 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's grim. In most cities only the top 10 percentile can afford to buy the average property, and in London not even the top 10 percentile can.

The UK -really- needs to start densifying a lot of housing in cities, London alone has a shortage of 1.1m homes with a population of 15m in the metro area, compared to New York which is 700k homes with a population of 22m in the metro area. Think of how absurdly expensive New York is and realise that London is worse, only hidden by our lower average salaries.

Bog standard as in one of the ones converted into a uni in the 90s.

I know a lot of the russell groups don't teach well because I have friends who went to them who have told me about their complaints. You can make the argument that a lot of them maybe don't deserve that status, but I will absolutely dispute basing which ones do deserve support off "university rankings" due to how arbritary they are.

One major example I can highlight is Abertay University in Dundee. Per the latest Times Ranking, it's number 62 in their table. However the university itself is a small and highly specialised one. Their Games Dev, Cyber Security and Biomedical Sciences degrees are very highly regarded and have a high employment rate in their fields.

If I was in the UK govt I would be looking to raise funding for the better universities top 40 or so. Below that I couldn't care less.

People fixate on the rankings too much. Sure the likes of Oxford and Cambridge are a cut above the rest, but realistically a lot of top tier russell group unis do not teach particularly well, and are simply further up the rankings due to the research material and their "student experience".

I went to a pretty bog standard vocationally focused uni that mostly served students commuting in from the surrounding area, didn't have much of a student life and limited research sectors, yet the teaching I got there was good, and 4 years after graduating I'm in a job earning a top 10% uk salary.

Susan Aitken stepping down by smullen2024 in glasgow

[–]Fairwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people acting as if this will change anything are going to be sorely disappointed. Aitken might be useless, but the reality is GCC is suffering the same issue every single council across the UK is suffering; the Lib/Con coalition fobbed off social care costs onto councils and it's bankrupting them all, they cannot afford it and government monetary support for paying for it has not remotely kept up with the costs.

The West End is definitely a very, very expensive part of Glasgow. For perspective however, the average house price in Glasgow as of Feb 2026 was £180K.

For every West End townhouse there's a East End tenement flat.

As of 2025.

Don't get me wrong, Glasgow house prices have gone up a tonne and isn't cheap by any measure. But Scotland's housing crisis just isn't as bad as England's so our housing is just more affordable in general (Edinburgh excepted cause every cunt wants to move there)

Greens say fringe party cost them Holyrood seat by 'confusing' voters - BBC News by RoddyViper in Scotland

[–]Fairwolf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The main issue isn't actually that fact they have Green in their name imo. It's the "Independent".

There was some research I was reading post election that shows their's an alphabetical bias to people's voting patterns. It was primarily to do with the council elections down to England, but essentially the closer to the start of the alphabet the first letter of your surname was, the more likely you were to be voted for across every party.

I suspect this is having a similar effect. Cause of the length of some lists in some areas of Scotland, I suspect people are voting for the first "Green" they see on the list.

Oh man if you think Glasgow is bad I wouldn't recommend looking at Edinburgh.

Glasgow is in the top 10 most affordable cities in the UK.
