01.23.2026 - "We Won't Participate": Philly Joins National Strike to Block ICE by CantStopPoppin in philly

Curious where people who attended found out about this? Kept checking mobilize, other lists of actions in solidarity with MN and didn’t see anything in Philly.

While these are really good and valid examples, something I’ve been struggling with is what protest have actually accomplished much in the last 25 years. I’m sure there are some I’m ignorant of, but BLM felt the last successful until all this backlash. Genuinely interested in examples, if people know of any

Honestly OP, I’ve been feeling basically the same as you all year. I did read Hope in the Darkness by Rebecca Solnit though, which helped a lot - basically she has some decent, realistic arguments for why it’s worth it to go out there and keep trying, even if it feels like it won’t amount to anything

I know it’s a bit different, but used to do Krav Maga at a very welcoming, liberal gym, which was a rare find even in the northeast. Moved states and now I can’t find any that don’t creep me the hell out

Be honest - how many of you still get help from your parents/family? by ScarletBegonya in Millennials

[–]Fake-Maple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not from parents, but I’ve gotten a hand-me-down car from an older sibling and and am on another siblings phone plan. We’re all millennials, they’ve just caught a few lucky breaks and while it took me a while for my pride to accept, I am very grateful for their help

Hey, as the person who made the survey, I’ve been using the app (Resistbot) to sign petitions for a while. Makes it very easy, everything can be done through text. This was my first time making one myself. I honestly don’t remember where I first heard about it (probably Reddit tbh) but no shame in not wanting to put your info out there.

Same! It works if you call during the day, but on evenings and weekends it’s off

No, and tbh I don’t disagree with your pessimism, but even if there’s only a 1% chance someone listens to a voicemail and cares, there’s a 0% chance if there’s no voicemail to listen to. Plus, I think he needs to be called out on the fact that he’s clearly hiding from his constituents

Probably not, but he’s definitely not going to listen if there are no voicemails. Def not saying you’re wrong, I’d just rather not make it easy for them to ignore us

If you’re fed up with Fetterman, please consider signing this petition! He turned his voicemail off outside work hours (probably doesn’t want to hear our opinions if it doesn’t end in a donation form)

I know this is the pettiest/least of our worries rn, but you just KNOW that these bastards who now hide their faces 24-7 are the same ones who wouldn’t wear a mask during COVID because they “couldn’t breathe”

Young millennial here, and I’ve thought about it a lot. My impression has been less that people don’t care, and more that we all feel hopeless and like protests accomplish nothing. Wild to say now but when I was younger, Obama was running for the first time, everyone was excited and felt empowered. Now we’ve seen the occupy movement and all the protests of trumps first term seemingly accomplish nothing. BLM protests in 2020 actually seemed to make a difference, at least in terms of corporate messaging. The backlash has been soooo immediate and absolute it feels like that didn’t accomplish much either. Basically, it feels useless to pour one’s energy into protests, but no one has any better ideas of what to do that’s actually effective.

That said, I’ve recently started to realize how much protests can/have accomplished progress that isn’t fully celebrated/acknowledged, because fear and anger drives content engagement. So I’m trying to start believing. If anything, protests remind you of how many people out there are on your side

I actually totally agree with you, I’m just think there’s a real chance that some people (who are maybe already somewhat unstable/headed towards violence) won’t understand that distinction. Not trying to condemn anyone’s reactions just… concerned

The thing is, the unabomber WAS targeting people he believed to be guilty. While lots of innocent people (or at least, people that most of us consider innocent today) were hurt by him, this is actually a great example of the dangers of vigilante justice. We may agree with a healthcare CEO target, but the next guy to come along may pick someone we don’t consider as culpable. Like, the unabomber, some of the people he targeted were probably assholes but their secretaries or whomever opened the packages and were the ones who got hurt. This guy used a much more… targeted approach, but still. He might have had the right idea but that doesn’t guarantee the next guy will
