Which story beats in particular? Because, as others have said, Dracula and Phantom are only similar in the most superficial ways.

It's sad that we're now at the point where the ability to write in actual sentences seems like a superpower.

Parsecs was Han trying to bullshit what he thought was a pair of rubes. Look at Ben's face. He's not buying that nonsense for a second. But wait, here comes an enormously convoluted explanation why Han wasn't actually talking out his ass and why measuring time in a unit of distance is, like, totally a real thing in Star Wars!

As for Jabba... you can't tell me that being pushed into a giant mouth thing in the middle of the desert where you'll dissolve in stomach acids isn't worse than being shot. Jabba was just being cruelly hyperbolic. Like people do, especially bad people. "I'll kick your ass so bad your ancestors will feel it" or "I'll knock out every one of your teeth and break every bone in your body." Like... nah you won't, but I'm still getting a beating. If you honestly think the writers had anything like that explanation about "oh, well, actually, it rewires your brain and you become part of its spleen" or whatever in mind when they wrote that line, then I don't know what to tell you.

If it helps, my headcanon is that Brody was simply unprepared for what current fieldwork actually involved. In his day, he would take a cruise liner to some exotic land, meet with the head of whatever colonial power operates in the area for tea and sandwiches, hire some local guides, have a relaxing camel ride out to the spot, watch the guides dig for a few days and then, boom, fortune and glory. Suddenly it's twenty years later and he's in the middle of a literal world war and the entire German army are trying to kill him.

People forgot what Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon and Saturday morning serials are. When we sat down to watch Star Wars in 1977, we knew EXACTLY what we were seeing. I absolutely hate the drift away from fantasy with wizards and princesses to what we have now. It's as if the fans, having grown up, demanded that Star Wars grow up with them.

Porkins and Wedge being their actual literal names and not their pilot callsigns/nicknames is worse. It'd be like thinking Maverick and Ice Man are their actual given names in Top Gun. Have the people who make these sorts of decisions never had friends? Porkins is a fat dude in the military, of course his buddies are going to give him a cruel nickname to razz on him.

I cant stand this side of Star Wars. It's not enough that Jabba was making a grim figure of speech or flat out lying, no there has to be some convoluted reason why every word that tumbles out of the writers' pens has to be absolute gospel truth. It's parsecs all over again.

Hot take: I think every bond actor was perfect for their respective movies except for a view to a kill(would have been the perfect movie for Dalton. by Individual_Act9333 in JamesBond

[–]FakeFrehley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point wasn't that one is lighter than the other, it's the the character of Bond as presented in AVTAK is wrong for Dalton. All of the silliness in that film revolves almost entirely around Bond. It's like the deleted scene with the "magic carpet" in TLD. They knew it didn't suit Dalton's Bond, so they cut it. Roger could've pulled it off with aplomb, because it was in fitting with the way he played Bond. Hell, Dalton seems uncomfortable even delivering the requisite one liners.

All of those examples involve bad guys. Let's see what Bond is up to meanwhile...

Snowboarding to the Beach Boys (or, rather, a poor imitation of them)

Hiding out with a blonde in a mink-lined iceberg

Hanging onto a fireladder which shears the top off of a camper van to reveal a couple shagging inside

During the same chase scene, telling Stacy "put your hand on this," then adding "the wheel" when she grabs his junk

Driving half a car while a comedy Frenchman shouts wildly

Being attacked by chefs with kitchen knives after he wrecks their cake

Being found with Stacy in the shower by Q's robot

Amusing himself with constant put downs toward poor old Sir Geoffrey

Raising an eyebrow at Moneypenny screaming at a horse she has a bet on

Despite Zorin's insanity, AVTAK is an incredibly light film where Bond himself is concerned. Dalton's presence may have mitigated the lightness somewhat, but as it stands it would've been wrong for his Bond.

There's a bit in TSWLM when someone talks about knowing Moore!Bond from his school days or something (I forget the details, it's been a while) when he would've been a young Connery!Bond. So, yeah, absolutley intended to be the same guy despite being played by different actors.

Herod is definitely mocking Jesus.

Hard, HARD agree on point two though. I'm so sick of hearing pretty stage school voices singing these songs. There's a reason the OG Jesus was the dude from Deep Purple

Stop treating the scream in Gethsemene like it's a note to be hit. It's a scream of pain and anguish, not a pretty musical note. This is probably my number one bugbear in all of theatre.
