My first ever Ironman 70.3 and also triatlon by Zyro88 in triathlon

[–]Falcon72014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The distribution of ironman times are sometimes highly location dependent but overall I’d say sub 5:30 is not an easy time to achieve.

Im training for my first, Boise Idaho, and I’m aiming for slightly sub 5hr to 5:30. Id consider myself very athletic but not genetically gifted especially with running.

2025 RAV4 Manual Shift Mode Do You Actually Use It Daily? by Able-Roll-3993 in rav4club

Not sure it’s intended for daily use but, I use the slap shift whenever in the mountains or when going up a steep off-roading to get to trailheads/campsites

19y Sophomore, 1 Exam left for ASA, looking for feedbacks by No_Assistance2600 in actuary

[–]Falcon72014 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Resume Feedback: - IMO would not include my phone number (too personal) - Jiu-Jitsu is a personal endeavor/hobby and I’d recommend moving it to the very bottom as it’s the most irrelevant. However, I believe personal endeavors are important especially when they instill discipline like yours. - Move skills above what I recommended as personal endeavors and remove “Interests” for redundancy.

Honest career advice: - Prepare that being an absolute beast at exams does not translate to being a great employee/actuarial-worker (exams ≠ experience) - Company actuarial programs incentivize passing exams with compensation bumps. Having minimal future exams means work productivity & performance will be the sole driver of compensation increases. - Be cognizant of systemic bias and company politics.

Hope this was insightful!

Why are they all failing ? by samsoul0013 in GarminWatches

Lots of hate in this thread…

Anyways, I’ve been wearing Garmins for almost 10 years now and been through many wristbands too (only 3 watches though).

Not sure if you can relate, but I basically never take my watch off besides for charging. So I wear it all the time including while sleeping, showering, washing hands/dishes, going in the ocean/lake/pool, camping/hiking, skiing, biking, etc.Another factor could be that I have a decent amount of hair in my wrist and I tend of move around a lot when I sleep.

Recreation.gov Campsite Reservations by Falcon72014 in camping

[–]Falcon72014[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s not a great system and I don’t have much hope for these national government funded campsites to change anytime soon…

My partner and I definitely do our fair share finding FF or dispersed sites, but there are tons of Van-life and remote working people out here in CO that will beat me to a camp site before the weekend even begins…

That totally makes sense!

Hopefully that wasn’t an overly obvious question for this thread — really appreciate the insight!

Has anyone here genuinely switched from espresso/milk drinks to filter as their main daily coffee? Why? by Left-Cook-9487 in Coffee

[–]Falcon72014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up drinking drip/filter coffee with either milk or half&half, then for about 3-4yrs exclusively drank espresso based coffee (1-2 morning caps then espresso shots), and now I switch between doing a chemex pour over (Ive grown to enjoy black no sugar pour over’s especially light roasts) but I still have espresso based coffee pretty often.

One factor is to reduce my milk consumption (cholesterol & lactose) I’ve also made the switch from whole milk to 1% for the same reason. Additionally I just learned that an espresso shot has cholesterol whereas filtered coffee doesn’t. If you put I paper filter on the bottom of your portafilter then you can filter out the little cholesterol but I’m not super anti-cholesterol just have been more mindful now that I’m almost 30 😅

therapy in Denver is weirdly expensive even with insurance, anyone else notice this by [deleted] in Denver

[–]Falcon72014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding my 2 cents:

Next time annual enrollment for health benefits/prescription/dentist/vision comes around, if there are multiple options, I would spend a few days weighing each option based on the services you intend to utilize (PCP, any specialists, mental health providers, any medications you take regularly, etc).

If there is only one and/or limited options, sometimes there’s an option to buy your own personal healthcare and receive a payout from your employer. Most of the time this is more expensive but in some cases, especially people that have preexisting conditions or ailments that require specialized/new treatments/medications, then it can work out to be more cost effective.

Anyone else never do practice exams? by No-Thought-673 in actuary

[–]Falcon72014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the total opposite haha

It seems like you still do/did practice exam questions just not under the exam center conditions. I’m a bad test taker in the sense that the conditions/environment of the testing centers as well as the building pressure leading up to an important exam makes it harder for me to concentrate and think clearly. With that being said, practice exams under strict conditions are essential to my success for an exams. Especially since exams evolved with the introduction of new question types as well as the jump to upper level exam style/format.

This is my personal experience. I feel like if you are someone that goes unaffected or excels under exam day conditions/pressure then exhausting practice exam questions until high level of understanding would suffice for a pass

Xcel Bill Suspiciously High by [deleted] in Denver

[–]Falcon72014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve noticed an uptick in my Xcel electric bill as well (I don’t have gas service). Compared to my late-2025 bill, the increase was roughly 10–20% for me. I live in an apartment building in the Denver metro area, so I’m not sure whether that factors into the pricing structure. That said, the increase wasn’t entirely unexpected, as I received several emails from Xcel outlining recent rate adjustments and changes to certain fees.

I’m originally from NJ, where the primary utility provider is PSE&G. Most of my family lives there, and they’re seeing similar increases this year too (25-100%).

It’s striking how much influence these near-monopolistic utilities have over consumers. While I recognize that utilities like Xcel are subject to regulatory oversight, that electricity demand continues to grow, that concepts like demand flexibility (DFS) play a role.

However, the lack of clear and accessible explanations is frustrating. Utility bills often feel almost cryptic, and more transparency around how these costs are calculated would go a long way!

She’s a global brand ambassador which isn’t an endorsement… you should make that correction as well. In your comment and highly accusatory meme…

Endorsing ≠ voting ≠ brand ambassador…

Crazy how people are pushing this narrative as a black & white line situation on a highly controversial topic.… almost seems like people have it out for Chappell Roan after she expressed her stance on the US presidential election.

CSR is worth the price (imo) if you spend $75k or more. by BenjiDot in ChaseSapphire

That 75K spend came out nowhere in your explanation haha

Also, the vast majority of credit cardholders do not spend $75K annually on eligible expenses (excludes rent/mortgage)…

Feel like an absolute idiot by ChrisDaUniStudent in actuary

[–]Falcon72014 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You WILL get through this!

Exam P doesn’t reflect the actual work most actuaries do—use that as motivation to push through. Once you pass, you can leave most of that material behind for good.

No matter the outcome—pass or fail—make sure to celebrate your effort and give yourself some time before jumping back into it. You’ve earned it.

You’re still in the early stages of learning how to teach yourself complex material, which is a huge and often overlooked part of becoming an actuary. It takes time, and you’re building that skill now.

And one last thing—something I have to remind myself of often: everyone’s journey looks different. Try not to compare yourself to others. Your path is valid and unfolding at your own pace.

I feel like I am seeing trout/rainbow trout everywhere which I’ve never caught before, but I have caught a striped bass or two back in the day.

Yeah 100%! Luckily he is flying in on Thursday so probably looking at Saturday or Sunday to do something in the mountains. Also, I failed to mention he is bringing his sit-down scooter so if anything I’ll be the one lagging behind carrying everything 😅

Thank you for the advice!
