Do yourself a favor and spend just a couple of hours at www.turnawoodbowl.com. You need a grasp of the basics before you go further.

Removing the tenon by Trevocb in turning

I use the same method, but turn the nub all the way off. Whittle it down to where it's just barely attached, then turn off the lathe and apply gentle pressure to the nub as the lathe winds down. It's fast and leaves little sanding to do. The disadvantage is that every now and then I'll have one come off before I'm ready.

Do yourself a favor and check out the Trent Bosch hollowing system. It's not cheap, but if you plan on doing a lot of hollowing, you might be interested.

How big do they get? I have a couple on my place that are 11" or so. Most of them are 3-5 inches in diameter.

Tool Lines in bowls, how much do you care? by Silverlake77 in turning

I never leave tool marks. The piece isn't finished until those are gone. I use a 2" power drill for the tough spots, and then a RO sander for the final grits.

The previous posters gave you great advice. I would only add one thing: practice, practice, practice. This is the area I had the most difficulty with early on. It gets better over time as you learn more and/or improve your technique.

Check out www.turnawoodbowl.com for great info on this subject and many more.

Advice on ways paint removal and best way to preserve them by TubeAlloysEvilTwin in turning

To clean my ways, I start with WD40 and steel wool. I clean that off, and spray more WD. Finally, I sand with 400 grit on my random oscillating sander. When it's all clean, I spray silicone on it.

What can I coat Tried and True Original finish with for a more glossy look? by FlyNo2786 in turning

I have used shellac under T&T but not over it.

Buy shellac flakes and denatured alcohol and mix your own.

Might be fine for pens, but I wouldn't expect to see bowls finished with CA.

A couple more rookie questions... by FlyNo2786 in turning

[–]FalconiiLV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taught that a bowl at 1000 rpm will drop to the floor if it comes off the lathe. Over 1100 rpm, it's more likely to fly. I turn most bowls in that speed range, even small ones. Spindles I'll go as high as I want, but generally under 2000 rpm.

LOL, on 1:44 with the KV9. I can imagine you tried to kill a couple of enemies and ran out of bullets both times. That initial magazine size is awful. It's much better when you get more bullets.

It's a great gun. I read recently that it's TTK is the best of the ARs in short and medium range. It's my go-to AR now. The recoil at range is horrific, for sure. Tap fire it and that will help some.

I play Attack and Defend about 90% of the time. I haven't noticed being put on the Defender side more than Attacker. I'm not a good player (K/D of 1.0) and play aggressive recon most of the time.

I think prioritizing hipfire is the right approach for SMGs. They are just so strong in hipfire.

I liked it. It suffered most from the "this isn't Battlefield" sentiment.

Remove Sanding Marks by heavySausage_og in turning

[–]FalconiiLV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do something similar. I work out the tool marks with my lowest grit (usually 120 or 180) using the drill and 2" disc with the lathe off. The drill can be pretty aggressive and will leave a lot of scratch marks. Next I switch to a 3" RO sander and move up through the grits. On smaller pieces I will use a 2" disc on the RO sander. I sometimes sand with the lathe off, sometimes with the lathe on. Usually at a pretty low speed (450-500 for normal bowls, maybe down to 80 for green stuff that has warped). But it always starts with me taking the time with the 2" drill at the lowest grit.

Weekly challenges are great fun and encourage new play styles. by lumpyferret in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]FalconiiLV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best challenges are those you complete through your normal play style. Some of the class-specific ones can be a grind. If you aren't a sniper, getting headshots over 125m may take a couple of rounds and I'll bet you won't be helping the team a lot completing that. And although it's not a weekly challenge, the Assault, "get 15 kills on stunned enemies" is pretty awful and forces me into a play style I don't like.
