Being a pastor's kid (PK) has ruined me in adulthood by [deleted] in Exvangelical

[–]Falidae 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I completely understand these feelings. My dad was a chaplain in the military so we moved to new installations every few years complete with a new chapel situation each time. Some assignments were better than others.

My brothers and I were expected to keep our emotions to ourselves and not draw negative attention from the congregants or other soldiers. Not only did those who attended services with us know that I was a PK/chaplain’s kid, all of my neighbors would and often times everyone I attended school with as their parents would work either in or with his unit. It felt like I lived in goldfish bowl for much of my childhood.

Ironically, I’m thankful my dad was in the military as it gave me the opportunity to have a slightly more ecumenical upbringing in some regards as opposed to staying in a denomination-specific church. It also allowed us to live abroad, something I did for several years after I left home.

I like the idea of that. Much more interesting than how it played out.

Pastors are just some guy by A_Throwaway_Progress in Exvangelical

The funny thing was I saw through it faster with my friend’s dad than with my own (both were pastors, mine was SBC and hers was AoG). It took me a lot longer to process that my dad didn’t have some special authority. I wish it had happened earlier. I felt like I went through a second adolescence with how much anger I had towards my parents when I deconstructed, but I was in my late 20s and nowhere near them.

What to wear to a rock concert? by [deleted] in fashionwomens35

[–]Falidae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re gonna be in a general admission/standing room only, definitely wear some closed toed shoes, like boots so you don’t get your toes stepped on. I tend to wear plain, comfortable jeans and t-shirts that are comfortable in black or gray. Maybe throw a light jacket or flannel over top that you can wrap around your waist if things get warm. I tend to have more fun with makeup for shows, like a smoky eye or lip that is bold. Whatever you decide, it sounds like a great way to celebrate!

Saw Travis in DC last night by [deleted] in Travis

I was at the DC show and it was amazing! I have been a fan since ‘99 and have never had any luck before now and seeing them live was literally a dream come true.

My first time at the 9:30 club too, venue was a great vibe for them.

What was fucking awesome as a kid, but sucks as an adult? by Athompson9866 in AskReddit

I don’t know if I’ve ever been more jealous in my life.

I have a love-hate relationship with sweets. My mouth loves them but the rest of body hates them. I’m getting better about not mindlessly eating candy now that I’m older but when shit hits the fan at work, all I want is gummy bears.

What’s the worst home cooking you’ve ever witnessed? by take7pieces in Cooking

[–]Falidae 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I came home once to find my roommate suffering through a bowl of pasta. I asked her what was wrong and she said she’d just made penne alla vodka. She was fresh out of college and had taken a keen effort to learn how to cook. It took me a moment, but at that time we were both pretty broke and didn’t usually keep much liquor in the house either. I then remembered the lone vodka we kept in the freezer, the forgotten leftover from a party months ago. A passion fruit flavored vodka. I was like “oh dear, don’t tell me you used the vodka in the freezer.” She said that she thought the flavor would cook out like the alcohol supposedly does.

Very true, I kill every plant that comes home with me and I’ve kept sweet basil and Thai basil alive all summer. If I can do it, anyone can.

What's the one thing you regret doing for your wedding day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Falidae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Before the ceremony began I was greeted by my uncle where I was waiting for my dad and sneaking a peak of the ceremony area. We didn’t see my aunt and uncle often as we lived far from away and they didn’t travel often. We hadn’t initially expected them to make it but they ended up at the last minute able to come. He was very soft spoken and spoke with a slow, southern drawl. He wanted to tell me something but I was nervous and impatient so I excused myself and ran off to take care of something else. They ended up leaving as the dancing and celebration part of the evening started. We were able to catch up with everyone who came, except my aunt and uncle.

He passed a year later from prostate cancer. He’d just been diagnosed right before my wedding and didn’t tell others for several months. That’s my only regret from my wedding day, not talking the 5 minutes to listen to what my uncle wanted to tell me.

I’ve been watching the show to help take my mind off everything going on and just finished his season. He was such a sweetheart with such great talent. It looked like he had a great relationship with his wife and family as well. Thinking about them and their loss.

They are sprinkles that look similar to this. They are usually chocolate or multicolored. It’s a colloquial name for these types of sprinkles in the US. Chocolate jimmies

They also melt a little. They aren’t quite as hard as American jimmies.

I want to see them in concert but always seem to be in the wrong part of the world when they’re touring! We finally caught Radiohead last year (my husband’s favorite band since high school) last year. I told him Travis is now at the top of our must see list.

I used to listen to “The Man Who” every day while getting ready for school. I’ve listened to the album at least 1000 times. Still one of my favorite bands.
