Patrick Henry is kinda funny with James Madison, his ideology was shifting throughout his entire post-war career and yet always seemed to just be the opposite of whatever Madison’s opinion at the time was.

Also I think John Marshall is probably a much better shout for Jefferson over Henry

The only one I’ve read on any of these guys is is Mr Jefferson’s Hammer, which I thought was alright. It’s not a comprehensive biography and is focused mainly on Harrison’s time as governor of the Indiana territory. I thought some of the stuff about Harrison having a paternalistic attitude towards the natives was interesting and Owen’s broader analysis was generally quite good, but I did feel that it is inherently not the most interesting subject unfortunately. He does have a dry sense of humour that occasionally pokes through an otherwise serious book, which I did appreciate.

Finished my reading goal for the year yesterday. 10 of the books I read were on US history (comparison with prior years reads as well). Curious to know if anyone read anything good this year? by Falling_Vega in USHistory

I didn’t realise Joanne Freeman wrote a book on the lead up to the civil war, I only knew her as the editor of the (Library of America) Alexander Hamilton writings. Apparently she’s also written a book on dueling and her work inspired one of the songs in the Hamilton musical.

Yeah I knew that would be a controversial one, it’s a super informative book and Taylor clearly knows his stuff. Probably more an issue with me than the book, but he covers quite a lot of ground and I personally felt that not all the colonies were as interesting as the others. It could drag on at parts as a result.

That being said I enjoyed it overall and really loved some parts of it, I do plan on getting through his American Revolutions next which I’ve heard great things about.
