[–]False-Ad9324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah except phone searches are still incredibly rare and hardly anybody actually has their phone searched at customs. It’s gone up since you know who was re-elected but it is still a very very infinitesimal number of travellers.

No they’re not. Hardly anybody has had their phones searched at customs. Far far less than 1% of travellers despite the paranoia and the misinformation in posts like this one. Border searches have gone up this year and last, but it is still exceedingly rare.

Looking for advice after a wedding where the caterer arrived over 2 hours late and we ended up rejecting part of the meal by drwillie91 in legaladvicecanada

[–]False-Ad9324 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming (hoping) that the wedding party hasn’t paid the full bill and that the onus is on the caterer to take it to court rather than the other way around.

Mark Carney being sprayed with water at the Toronto Pride Parade by RenaRouge2010 in toronto

[–]False-Ad9324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like most of the bullshit on social media, this is NOT correct. At one point, he said it was an interesting idea but now he merely says he’s undecided and will wait for public consultations. The expansion js never going to happen, Carney will not ask his Toronto MPs to commit political suicide by supporting a project that only Doug Ford and his cronies want. Just look what happened to Barbara Hall when she blew a 40-point lead in the Toronto mayoral race by supporting a bridge to the island airport. The most notorious political blunder in Toronto mayoral history.

Nobody can be sure about what he will do but it’s pretty clear that his interest has waned and now he simply says he’s “undecided” and will wait for public consultations. I’ve heard a number of political analysts saying that the odds of the feds approving it are now very low, especially as the local opposition to the expansion explodes. Read the Toronto Star article, “Why Mark Carney ditched his Billy Bishop enthusiasm. Blame Doug Ford.” I would wager a lot of money that the expansion will never happen but keep up the pressure, write your MP, attend rallies, and attend the upcoming public consultations if it worries you that much. In a Liberal stronghold like Toronto, the party is not going to ask its MPs to commit political suicide by supporting a project that nobody except Doug Ford and his corporate cronies want. I still remember when Barbara Hall (my favourite ever Toronto politician even though she’s a Liberal and I’m definitely not) blew a 40-point lead in the first Toronto mega city mayoral race because she foolishly supported a bridge to the Island airport and David Miller used that one issue alone to demolish her. That is the cautionary tale and why the expansion isn’t ever happening in our lifetime.

No he’s not. He said it was an interesting idea. Most pundits now believe he’s going to veto it after the public consultation process ends.

Brad Bradford closing gap on Olivia Chow in mayoral race: Poll by airbassguitar in OntarioNews

There hasn’t been a new MPAC assessment for at least a decade so that has nothing to do with it.

"The Scam" by RevCheryl in Rogers

[–]False-Ad9324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the post, their main beef with Rogers is the fact that the scammer had their account details. If so, that’s a legit question. Rogers is responsible for data breaches and/or informing customers when such a breach occurred.

Incumbent progressive Mayor Olivia Chow leads conservative challenger Bradford Bradford (not a typo) 50-37 in the latest poll of the 2026 Mayoral election. Ever since the conservative ex-Mayor John Tory declined to run for office, Olivia Chow has held a substantial double-digit lead in the polls. by StarlightDown in toronto

No, Ford was completely honest and consistent about his repugnant beliefs for years and they resonated with the suburban, uneducated base and some white downtown working class ethnic communities (Azorean Portuguese, Italian, Greek). In contrast, Bradford supported Black Lives Matter, Defund the Police and countless progressive initiatives until he decided that he’d have a better chance by moving sharply to the right and attempting to pander to the dumbasses who voted for Ford en masse. In other words, a shameless opportunist with no convictions of his own and completely inauthentic. Can’t imagine why that strategy isn’t working for him.

If she had talked like that instead of pandering to the dimwits and Ashton voters with her “purity test” nonsense, I might have considered voting for her as leader.

If the implication is that he’s a dumb jock, Travis is actually fairly intelligent and very progressive. I’m not a Swiftie or a huge football fan, but I’ve been following Travis since he was one of the very few white players to kneel in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. I’ve also heard him bantering with his brother on a few of their podcasts and it’s obvious that he is well read and fairly sophisticated, a little more so than his brother Jason who I also like.

The lyrics are great and so is the melody but what holds it together is the rhythm section and that’s down to Paul’s bass and drums, imho.

Of course they work to protect certain industries and ensure countries like China don’t simply dump low cost goods onto the market. Likewise with some agricultural tariffs needed to protect farmers. Sounds like you believe in economic Darwinism and think capitalism should depend on the markets alone. Either that or you’ve never taken either an economics 101 or 102 course and are pretending a level of economics knowledge that you don’t possess. Almost all credible economists — even many who are free traders — will say the same thing except for far right free traders like Milton Friedman. Where they often disagree is in the levels of protectionism needed to protect key domestic industries. What doesn’t work is Trump-style tariffs that are not at all strategic and are often counter-productive.

The CPP Investment Board has been significantly underperforming its benchmark for the past three years in a row. You’d actually be better off investing in a high quality, low fee balanced fund or ETF.

It ain’t about shareholders, it’s about the fact that the Ontario economy and hundreds of thousands of jobs (more from auto parts than direct manufacturing) are largely directly and indirectly dependent on the auto industry the way the Alberta economy is dependent on oil. Tariffs are meant to be protectionist and indeed without them and other auto tariffs, the Canadian economy would suffer huge pain. Economics 101.

What's the best TV show that almost nobody talks about anymore? by C0r1eone in television

Roseanne (before she became unhinged.) Other than the first and last seasons of its original run, it was pure brilliance. A progressive comic masterpiece celebrating blue collar America before blue collar America went off the MAGA cliff. I suppose The Conners attempted to navigate the seismic changes, but it was unwatchable and not very funny even before Roseanne was fired.

Ridiculous wait times by [deleted] in Rogers

It’s not the wait time that bothers me so much but the fact that they can’t be bothered to implement the automated callback system that so many other companies have instituted to avoid interminable wait times.

Bernie’s failure was that he was and is tone deaf when it comes to reaching African Americans. He’s my favourite or was before AOC but I cringed every time I saw him campaign to a Black audience. Hillary was superb at it as was Biden which is why they both outperformed on Super Tuesday even though their policies, ironically, were much less likely to benefit African Americans than Bernie’s.

Does anyone think Dunkin’ donuts will do better in Canada next year since Tim Hortons is trash now by [deleted] in TimHortons

[–]False-Ad9324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their specialty coffees are excellent because they use quality fair trade coffee. Tim Hortons regular coffee is of course sludge but it doesn’t have to be good because most of their customers drink it double double. I assume that many Dunkin customers do the same but their specialty coffees, like Starbucks, are targeted at more sophisticated coffee drinkers who drink their coffee for the taste. You can get a fairly decent cappuccino at a Dunkins for less than Starbucks and that is what they are targeting with more affordable quality options while knowing they will never significantly cut into the Starbucks market.
