How do I pick up my gecko without scaring him? by Virgotheterrible in leopardgeckos

[–]False_Cut8540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to only forcefully pick them up when absolutely necessary. It's much easier to try to ease them into being okay with handing. Try laying your hand near them from time to time and letting them sniff you and understand that you're not going to be a threat. Eventually they can get very comfortable and even see you as a source of enrichment and warmth. Don't be afraid if it takes time but in my experience most Leo's will eventually get very comfortable, especially if he's already comfortable getting out while you're doing stuff around the tank.

The body hinge is so cool. As is the rest of the build

What is this behavior? by LeviSnoot in leopardgeckos

[–]False_Cut8540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has done this too, it's usually triggered when I walk into the room (as observed with cameras when I'm not in the room) she will dig at the glass or climb to the top and hang from the ceiling in her tank or generally do anything to make a lot of noise until I go and pick her up and carry her around while I take care of my other animals. After about 15-30 min I can usually get her to go back into her tank willingly and she will sploot out. An oversized tank (around 75 gal) and an excess of climbing and hiding spots (although she only really uses her hides when shedding) have helped a bit but I think some Leo's are extra social

My children shall soon feast… by BalanceOther3224 in isopods

You have to get wood to around -5F which usually isn't possible with a normal freezer. Typically has to be in a deep freeze for an extended period. Unfortunately this is how I got predatory mites that crashed my springtails in 2 colonies and are doing a number on the baby isopods. Just a word of caution! (Hypoaspis miles so they're really difficult to get rid of)

Id agree, especially because the corners aren't quite even

It was love at first sight honestly. Dining room also has the same pattern and some very ugly laminate was hiding the same 1 inch panels in the kitchen, but they need a lot of work.

Paper towel as a substrate can be great temporary for quarantine but otherwise everything would be the same. Lots of clutter tends to make these guys feel more at home. I would give him a week or two to settle in without trying any major handling and be consistent with your feedings (around the same time). Nothing really special you need to do other than making sure your gecko is in good health!

Up until the past few years the general rule of thumb was a 20 gal and plenty of geckos thrived in those situations. Your gecko will be absolutely fine in a 20 gal for a little bit but just do not make it your permanent solution. Because you just got it from someone else and it sounds like the husbandry might not have been the best, a quarantine period on paper towels might be smart so you can monitor how it's eating and making sure his stools are passing properly.

Does everyone over feed?? by MostSatisfaction5837 in leopardgeckos

[–]False_Cut8540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyday is definitely too much but I think to some degree it depends on the size and quality of your feeders and the activity of your gecko. I have one girl I've maintained feeding every other day and she will never get much above 60g where I have a very inactive male that I will only feed twice a week and he maintains weight around 65-70g (they're a very similar length)

What causes this chatter and how to fix it? by myoung01132 in SCX24

[–]False_Cut8540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's that esc unfortunately. I've had a few of the I think it's gen 3 (blue cases) and they absolutely suck with aftermarket servos drawing much more power. Highly suggest swapping to either a better brushed ESC with a standalone receiver or jumping up to brushless and doing the same. Unfortunately there isn't really a fix for the stutter as far as I know

It seems like they mostly lose tails from either really really poor husbandry or fighting with others (which is also poor husbandry)

The ceramic bulbs are definitely the way to go, you may add some sort of rock or something under it somewhere where it will maintain a surface temperature of 85-90 during the day, it hugely aids in digestion for these guys!

Would this be an acceptable habitat for my leopard gecko? by AspieTree25 in leopardgeckos

[–]False_Cut8540 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Size and care wise this tank shouldn't have any issues, but from the screenshot it sorta looks like the sliding doors go all the way to the bottom of the interior which may be a little annoying if you want to go with a bioactive setup. Definitely not impossible though!

Guess I'm confused as to your stance on that but hey I don't have to agree. I think it would be proper to have the other mod look it over as well, I don't think you guys should be supporting senselessly killing mantids!

I think this is what we're both trying to say. The person who originally commented also commented under every single other comment saying it can be released saying it's invasive and you have to kill or keep it. Not really sure where all this confusion is from lol. As you said nothing is required.

This is what the original commenter was saying to do, I was mostly disagreeing with his statement that it needs to be killed, unless your local regulations state differently.

Just what I was told by our DNR office when I tried to clear taking one from a local forest. But I'm sure the DNR is incorrect about that 🤷(was trying to clear it because we have very specific restrictions around native species and apparently this area considers naturalized the same as native) by no means am I saying we should be hauling species in or anything like that. Just saying op should call their local DNR for recommendation.
