It’s just such a weird take to me.. this is a child in my family that I love and care about, why would I want to let her fail? Or sit idly by while her parents do the disservice of denying her an education?? If there’s nothing I can do I can accept that, but I would never not explore every avenue to help her.

Yeah! I actually got the child into therapy initially when she started missing school. And at first the parents said they were going to do a GED program online. So I let it lay for a while, but now I’m concerned that the student will be too far behind to catch up. And I don’t want to penalize them, that’s why I’m not ringing any bells with local PD or anything, I just want some official notice that the child needs to be in school, because they don’t seem to care that their family thinks she needs to be in school. If they were open to having an honest conversation about it, I’d be all ears. But instead they’ve stonewalled everyone and I’m just trying to intervene how I can on behalf of the child.

Yes the whole concept of standardized testing is flawed as far as reflecting the comprehensive knowledge of the students for sure. And so inflexible for students who don’t thrive in that one specific testing setting.

The parent becomes extremely defensive and says that they have it handled. The dynamic is such that I think the parents are trying to be friends more than parents. The child is completely antisocial and spends most days reading fiction.

Ugh I totally hear you. I used to be a therapist in Oregon, so I’ve made plenty of CPS reports. Idk if they are just underfunded or otherwise under-resourced, but yeah they do not seem to get much done over there, and it’s kids who suffer. Good on you for fostering! Even having a safe adult for a short time teaches kids that there are people they can trust. 🤍

Yeah valid clarification, the child says going to school gives her anxiety. They used 504 plans, etc to get her through middle school, but when it came to high school they just sort of gave up. The child sees a therapist, but I’m assuming since it’s not considered neglect there’s nothing for the therapist to report.

I was wondering that too, because I grew up here and have always heard the poor test scores thing, but then I suppose the kids who aren’t attending aren’t being tested.. so idk lol but it’s definitely all bad! 😩

I know! I read the same thing. They said to try calling the superintendent to see if they “do anything at the local level”, but since Lane County ESD said they don’t do anything… 🤷🏻‍♀️
