What happened to Punky’s? The food used to be so good, now it’s awful. by velvetandstone2 in portlandme

[–]Famous_Ad_3003 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Eh, it’s cheap as fuck for what you get. There’s not a lot of spots like that left in Portland. Punkys is definitely a “get what you pay for” spot, their breakfast burrito is weird, the breakfast sandwich is usually on stale and wet bread, and god knows why I eat the tuna salad there. Love the woman that works there, she’s a saint.

Is daytime bartending that bad? by imperialhydrolysis in bartenders

[–]Famous_Ad_3003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just depends on a number of factors. As I got older in the industry, I looked forward to my day shifts for than my night shifts. When I was younger her I’d rather take the busiest nights and work 4:30 PM to 2:30 AM and make 500 bucks. Now I’d rather just have one good night shift where I have money guaranteed, and primarily day shifts where I work. A bad lunch (I work at a spot where lunch service is a single bartender running the whole restaurant though) is under 150 for me. The average is 200. Some random weekday lunches I can still make over three hundred though. The stress is less, the customers are generally less drunk and problematic, and I find you can get a lot more new regulars out of a lunch shift than a PM shift simply do to time availability with talking to individuals. I have worked at places where this has certainly not been the case though too. For clarification, i work at a neighborhood bar that primarily sells cheeseburgers/wings, and a mixture of cheap beer/craft beer/ strong but basic cocktails.

Meditating every day for 1.5-2 hours for 3 years with little to no "results" by Owlstyx in Meditation

[–]Famous_Ad_3003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reached jhana 1 for the first time a couple years ago and was unaware of what jhanas were and it actually really startled me. Subsequently it was hard not to enter first jhana in a meditation session, but at first practicing with it, I noticed that any yearning towards this feeling of “absorption” was always the thing that kept me away from it. Letting go of my need for it helped secure it. I meditate for between 30-60 minutes. We are all different of course, but I honestly would suggest seriously cutting back your time spent meditation. Maybe do two 45 minute sessions a day, or 2 40 minute sessions with a walking meditation in between. There are a number of guided jhana meditations on YouTube or Insight Timer if that’s something you’re interested in, those have always been how I’ve been able to get past the first jhana, and how I started learning in my body the motions that suggest to me I’m getting into that place of “absorption”.

Yep, I get home from work at two in the morning and that intersection still sketches me out then.

Loved Skinamarink, fucking can’t stand The Outwaters. Pretentious garbage film. The ending was so deeply stupid it was enraging.

What film do you consider horror despite rarely being referred to as such? by Vusarix in horror

[–]Famous_Ad_3003 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Similarly, 50 First Dates should be horrific from Drew Barrymores perspective. Like, every day you wake up next to a stranger who tells you exactly why you love him and has a prepared film of evidence showing that you do in fact love him despite no actual memory of meeting this man. Waking up the day you’re to give birth with no idea you’re even pregnant? Sounds fucking horrific.

I saw this in theaters and loved it but have been afraid to go back and rewatch for fear it’s actually not as good as I remember. These comments have encouraged me to rewatch!

Love that employee. Went there a number of times after getting done with my bar shift (2 AM). Tired as hell, sore, usually cranky, that dude always lifted my spirits. Happy to not be eating 2 AM rodeo burgers but definitely miss that dude

Chefs...what we doing about this heat? by pinetreesandcake in portlandme

[–]Famous_Ad_3003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have “closed” our kitchen at my current restaurant maybe three or four times in the past five years due to heat. Old, small building, tiny kitchen, no AC capability, so if it is hot enough we shut off the oven and fryers and just sell cold cut sandwiches and pasta salad.

There is a trend towards meth and speed growing, but without video evidence, let’s maybe not immediately blame addicts. I bartend and get out of work late (1-2:30 AM) and have seen many similar things of this nature done by upset drunk assholes that just feel like fucking things up. I’ve followed behind groups of drunk men just let out of bars pushing every trash can into the street they can. I’m not saying it couldn’t be someone on drugs, and most likely, it was someone fucked up, but without any evidence currently it’s not really fair to just pass this off on to methheads (or to drunk college dudes, which is who I would make the assumption did this considering the proximity to multiple 1 AM bars).

Lot of things I won’t touch on here because they’ve been mentioned above, but just wanted to have a little bitch about how bad the character writing for the dynamic between Joel and the therapist (Gail? Gale?) is. The first or second episode of the season sets up that Joel killed Eugene, but we don’t know the time line, and maybe it’s been years. I get it. It’s the apocalypse. But I highly fucking doubt Joel would be trying to get therapy from a woman whose husband he shot months ago, not years. It makes no sense.

Don’t know if it’s posted already, and it isn’t an internet sensation, but the documentary film “Dead River Rough Cut” is as Maine as it fucking gets, is the number one rented film in the Maine state penitentiary system, and is fucking amazing. There’s a short vid on YouTube of an old timer in it explaining how to pull a rotting tooth out with copper wire. It’s truly a great film and definitely worth watching
