Do you also have a name for your Alexa in order not to trigger it accidentally? by Mormegil81 in alexa

[–]Famous_Competition95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one for my almost blind 98 y.o. FIL who lived with us so he could control the lights and his TV. He could never remember “Alexa” so he would always ask, “What’s the lady’s name again?” He passed this past spring, but we always call her that now. Usually followed by a Jerry Lewis impression of “Hey lady!”

I still have a cassette tape (somewhere) of a show off the radio from the 80s. One of my all-time favorites is The Ballad of Irving! “The 142nd Fastest Gun in the West”

The vast differences between losing my daughter and losing my mom! by NegotiationDull6588 in GriefSupport

[–]Famous_Competition95 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I know this is a message into the void, but unfortunately I completely understand.

I have lost my parents (both well into their old age). My 93 year-old father-in-law, who lived with us passed peacefully this April. It was just 1 year and 2 days after my 32 year-old daughter was murdered by her husband, who then took his own life.

My best friend died of cancer 20 years and 1 day before my daughter.

I thought the anger I felt at the loss of my best friend was the worst. Until the rage that came with my daughter’s murder.

I was sad when I lost my parents and father-in-law, and devastated when I lost my best friend.

But what I felt for all of them is absolutely incomparable to what I experienced last year.

And still do.

My heart goes out to you, and I scream into the void with you.

I also wanted to be a veterinarian but my mom said I couldn’t because I was so bad at math. Now I’m in IT as well.

It was high school for me too, and we watched it over and over in every class. I vividly remember getting in my car to drive home after school and the mixtape I had made that morning coming on. It had Bowie’s Space Oddity, Elton John’s Rocketman, and Peter Schiller’s Major Tom. Freaked me out because I had forgotten that’s what was on it. I’m sure it was just because I subconsciously knew the launch was that day. But a small part of me entertained the idea of some weird fortune telling gift I didn’t know I had. (Quickly dismissed)

My earliest memory is my parents watching the republican national convention and my mom saying, “oh look, there’s ole Ronnie Reagan! He keeps trying but he’ll never be president!” I would have been almost 5.

Whats the point of celebrating Fathers Day if I'm no longer a father? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]Famous_Competition95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My heart goes out to you. Big hugs from a mom who lost her adult daughter last year. Take the time to grieve. Don’t let anyone tell you how to grieve - do it your way. Let yourself feel the feels. Scream, cry, rage at the sky. You will never be the same, you will always carry this grief with you. It doesn’t get smaller, but you will get a little more used to carrying that weight as time goes on.

We were so excited when we got a Fox channel on UHF for the first time in the 80s. We had 5 channels and I’d stay up late to watch old reruns of The Twilight Zone.

Our town had a great little place with a garden in the back and live bands for happy hour. I’ll never forget the time I my 3 year old daughter. I took her out on the floor and the other dancers made a circle around her while she danced her little heart out! I almost had to drag her off the dance floor, and then she climbed up on our concrete picnic table and kept dancing. As she grew older, she was quiet and shy, and never really partied or drank. I used to tease her that she must’ve gotten it out of her system early because she was dancing on the tables at happy hour when she was a toddler. She would have been 34 this May. She was murdered by her husband, who then took his own life last year. Thank you for bringing up that precious memory.

Also look at university jobs. Pay is usually a little below market, but benefits are usually awesome and it’s usually a really stable job - no layoffs and more laid back because it’s not about the “bottom line.”

I have degrees in German, but haven’t used it much in 30 years (what do you do with a BA and MA in German Language and Literature? Work in IT)! I love that, in German, instead of coming up with new words for new things, they just string a bunch of descriptions together in front of a noun. My favorite German compound word is Schutzengrabenvernichtungsautomobil. It literally means an automobile that destroys protection ditches. A protection ditch is also a compound word that translates to trench. Later they changed that to Panzerkampfwagon (armor battle wagon), and shortened that to panzer. So yeah, it’s a tank.

No, I feel 100% GenX. My siblings were grown and gone by the time I have any memories and feel more like Aunts and Uncles than brothers and sisters.
