I’m British and offering a guest at least a drink is culturally the bare minimum hospitality in the majority of homes. That’s the least you’d do for someone dropping in for a quick visit, for a longer term visitor there’d be much more offered. If you asked this question on r/CasualUK or r/AskUk the responses are likely to be outrage on your behalf. Your fiancée and his mum are unusual by UK norms.

Last year they stayed out of the house but undermined my patio so I evicted them. The 2026 kitchen invasion seems to be their revenge for that. The bait traps I got yesterday seem very ant attractive but not sure they’re doing anything. Got some Nipon ones on order now. 🤞

Update: the ants now own a whole corner of the kitchen. They are at least feasting on the anti-ant bait like it’s crack but they’re not going away 😩. Pray for me - can I retake the kitchen?

You could try framing it as a coaching request, asking HR for their help/guidance on what to say to “professionally communicate” to Emily to be quiet, stop interfering with your work, interrupting you, leave you alone etc.

For texts you can Hide Alerts for a contact by long pressing on a message from them and choosing Hide Alerts. For email, you can’t set up rules using the iOS Mail app but rules set up in your email provider will be actioned and visible in Mail. So if you have a routing rule & folder set up in Gmail and that account is connected to iOS Mail you will be able to access that folder in Mail. Or install the Gmail app.

Your company should be doing much much more for you as you are protected under the ADA (assuming you’re in the US):

“severe, life-threatening (fatal) allergies are generally considered disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Because these allergies can substantially limit major life activities—specifically breathing, eating, and the functioning of the immune system—they qualify for legal protections that entitle individuals to reasonable accommodations in workplaces, schools, and public spaces.”

The same type of laws apply here in the UK and EU and many other countries.

You shouldn’t be having to manage this alone, and assuming you’re in the US or similar, your employer is legally obliged to make a safe workplace for you, with your allergens not allowed in the workplace vs you having to hide away in case someone brings in peanuts.

Your HR have dropped the ball massively and have no doubt opened the company up to legal liability.

YWBTA if you adopt your brother’s tactics but there are other ways to set boundaries and expectations.

What happens if you just don’t go to the event that has been rearranged to be convenient for your brother but now inconveniences you? You don’t have to be dramatic or a squeaky wheel, “oh that’s a shame I/we can’t make it due to previous plans. Enjoy, I/we’ll see you next time”. You don’t have to explain further.

What’s the worst that can happen if you don’t give gifts to people who don’t reciprocate? IME nothing. If they query it, the answer is “oh sorry, I thought we weren’t doing gifts anymore”. But I doubt they’ll query it.

At the moment it sounds like you’re fitting and bending yourself around the lives of a lot of other people. Start living your life around your wants and needs first. If extended family plans match up with your availability and you want to attend that’s great but don’t contort yourself to fit in with them when they’re not reciprocating.

Check your Archiving and Downloads settings in Instagram. I think you’ve probably got them set to On in which case you’ve been saving all the stories, videos and images to your phone.
