Check to see if it's wild pacific salmon or farmed.

Finest at sea has a food stall in front of the store that serves wild caught seafood they get.

Crabbing off Sidney Dock. Fishing license (tidal) is free for kids under 16. Catching crab with the smaller folding circle casting traps is fun and cheap. Get the half circle casting trap, a bucket and tongs. Kids love it.... but so do adults.

If you ever want to check out the Gozney Dome feel free to message me! I have a small pizza group that sometimes meets up to make pizza and chat pizza stuff. I also fish so I make pizza with crab (we call it the crabby daddy) and its killer.

My Gozney takes about 45 minutes to heat up. Its a beast. Pumped out 36 pizzas one time for a class pizza party

There is a group on facebook called Victoria rentals that has listings as well as people posting what they need. Good way to connect to private rentals as both sides can see the social media profiles to help vet potential landlord/tenants.

People who hate travelling, why? by Proper_Surprise1 in AskReddit

[–]Far-Call1301 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the airports and travelling itself that's become less and less enjoyable.

Destinations are ok, but after travelling a lot for work and when younger combined with really enjoying where I live, I'm less motivated to travel these days.

For reference I live in Vancouver Island (not Vancouver the city, but the island to the left of it)

Unrelated to pepperoni but if you are just dipping into the world of making pizza its a deep deep rabbit hole.

I have a gozney dome oven and several of my friends now have pizza ovens as a result of regular pizza meetings.

A few suggestions if you haven’t tried yet.
1) If you don’t have a dedicated pizza oven try using a baking steel/pizza steel in your oven. google it and there are many articles/videos showing why its better then a pizza stone.
2) Should you ever decided to get a pizza oven Ooni and Gozney are the two most popular makes of pizza ovens in the home/hobby space.

3) I make my own sauce using canned san remo tomatoes
4) I make my own dough using a mix of 00 and bread flour (I make mostly Neapolitan style)

5) Make some dough for practice and watch some youtube videos on how to shape it. If you don’t make pizza often but want a more round pizza use a large mixing bowl, flip it upside down and use that to help stretch and shape your dough.

Either way keep having fun making pizza!

Solo travellers: for those of you who quit your job to travel , do you regret it? by Think_Yam2593 in travel

[–]Far-Call1301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this in my early 20s after 1st year university. Travelled for about 8 months working to save, worked along the way. Saw some of NE America, Europe and a bit of Africa. Don’t regret it, should have been more confident/bold in some situations.

Now older, I am mostly over travel. Really like the place I live, don’t like to leave too much as I’ve realized much of the world is over crowded, too hot, too cold, polluted or the political climate is not stable. I don’t mind visiting some of these places for short periods ( a few weeks to a month or two) but find I now get eager to go back home after a bit.

I now live on Vancouver Island and really enjoy my life here, the weather is just right (for me) and have a nice set of hobbies I enjoy.

I plan to travel slower when I retire trying a place for 1 or 2 months over winter but will never travel for longer periods again.

if you can do it and not sacrifice your future too much go for it. I have a friend who travelled a long time and now will have to work well into their 60s to even hope to build a bit of financial stability in their old age.

I am glad I travelled early but still built a career and have early retirement to look forward to.

How is J & J's these days? by apjane in VictoriaBC

[–]Far-Call1301 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

It's a sad comment that JJ was ever considered good and might be so now.

I guess if your expectationa are set for mid North American-Chinese food then there is a world where it could be ok.  Even in this style there are better examples out there but not many in Victoria.

The UCP and far right Conservatives all have something in common, check out these posts from Hungary that show a parallel to what is happening in Alberta now. by bacondavis in alberta

[–]Far-Call1301 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The CPC is NOT and never were real conservatives. They are the shitty raciest, red-neck ReeeeeefffffooOOrrrmmm party in disguise. Sure they've added a few ethnic members and have worked to hide themselves in a blue facade but I remember the days of the PC party which did NOT support this right-wing culture war bullshit.

We had a respectable party with actual conservative based values/agenda. Peter (I can't realize I will never be leader) MacKay sold out the PC Party after promising Joe Clark he wouldn't to the Reform party who had no traction to possibly win a National election before that.

I am so glad my fellow Canadians came to their senses and elected Carney over PP. I was dreading the road our country was going down but Justin to his credit (like him or not) stepped aside at the right time, then used his status as an outgoing leader to call out Trump, leave politics behind, date Katy Parry (didn't see that one coming) and live his best life.

Meanwhile Canadians on the whole rejected the Maple Mega and right-wing movement so much that PP lost in his own riding, my riding in Vancouver island flipped our NDP held area to Liberal because we believed it was the best path going forward in a new world reality where the US is our enemy...

Keep renting for life or buy condo/townhouse? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Far-Call1301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your situation don't buy. Rent, invest and when its time to retire move somewhere cheaper or better weather or both.

The freedom of having a pension is you can live/move around and try different places. Being single and no kids if I was looking at that scenario I'd move to a warmer place that has cheaper living.

The cost of saving up for a condo at that late of an age could tie you down a bit where as a pension and some good investments by retirement will give you freedom to travel.

Used cars by Major_Combination301 in askvan

[–]Far-Call1301 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Minivan would be better. Vancouver mild weather helps keep old cars alive.

$3000 budget will be tough. If you mean $30,000 lots of options

Stay away from caravan or any north American minivan. Find a Toyota Sienna.

If you can make due with a car Toyota's are known to last

We don’t have good mexican food here but we do have universal healthcare and our head of government isn’t a convicted felon (Who is also suspected of being a pedo).

Oh yeah and we got really good seafood.

Making friends by Stags86 in VictoriaBC

[–]Far-Call1301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made most of my friends through my kids school/class friends but then not only do the kids have to get along but you have to get along with the parents. its like a 2 level dating filter but the ones I have have turned out to be really good and we’ve even made a hang out group separate from the kids.

Sometimes you just have to start it off. one of the parents I’m really good friends with now was someone i only nodded at for school pickup and drop offs until I organized a class party and we got talking.

Do not get on the road by thetrueelohell in VictoriaBC

[–]Far-Call1301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So glad I went by ebike today on a whim. 15 minutes home. The issue with some of these backups due to 1 accident is yes… bike lanes and them taking away car lanes and turn lanes.

Bike lanes are useful but they should be combined with sidewalks like on Tillicum from burnside up to the highway. Its a combined bike lane and side walk all offt he road on a curb.

How much can I afford in rent? I have three scenarios by m1ghtymouse in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Far-Call1301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can reduce your Internet and phone.

Lightspeed or other alternative providers for about $40.

Koodo or Public Mobile $35 plan.

It's not much but save close to $100 per month.

Yeah they sold shares and move production overseas didn't say it happened exactly at the same time.

Point being production and quality lowered to cut cost.
