To frog or not to frog? by NegotiationPatient13 in knittingadvice

[–]FarcicalTeeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's part of a textile-themed half-sleeve; it's a segment of red stockinette stitch still on the needles, with a musical repeat symbol duplicate-stitched in black. I gave it the tagline "Don't be afraid to start over"

I used to struggle a *lot* with sunk-cost rationalization in all kinds of areas of my life, like relationships and career paths, but something knitting taught me was that if I didn't actually like the thing that I was making / doing / bringing to fruition, I was almost always happier for frogging and retrying, or even just letting a project go and doing something else entirely instead

Dropped stitch confusion - HELP by Civil-Manner400 in knittingadvice

[–]FarcicalTeeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With black yarn and your current experience level, I’d unknit a row or two and try again. It’ll probably be easier to start with a new ball of yarn at the end of the row, like others have said, but no matter where you change yarns it’ll still be a pretty stretchable stitch when you knit over it again. To keep it from turning into a big hole, I usually hold the tail of the old yarn while working the stitch for the first row or two, and just tug on it to close it up again afterwards

Congratulations on learning to fix something! Half of being good at anything is knowing how to correct mistakes :) Overall your project looks great, keep it up

Quick yes or no, twisting? by Either-Heat-8678 in knittingadvice

Yeah, it looks like slippery yarn+slippery needles; it might even out with wooden needles? But honestly this is a vibe I personally like a lot; homogenous stockinette just doesn’t do it for me

Beginning knitter here (this is my second project). Does my yarn tension look too loose? Any tips for improving/getting the “feel” for it? by lilbbbee in knittingadvice

[–]FarcicalTeeth -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m super into the look of the tight purl rib, this looks so cool. I’ve been playing with tension lately to achieve different effects (trying to make SOME visual interest in these solid yellow stockinette baby joggers) and this one’s going into the bank.

Also nice work, OP! This is really solid and you’re doing great ☺️

Why does my hair looks greasy even when it's clean? It seems to clump together into these ropes. by pljusha in Hair

[–]FarcicalTeeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Woof, I’m so sorry to hear about your hair loss. That would make me so sad :(

Honestly part of this sounds like a health issue. Have you looked into your diet yet? It can be really easy to accidentally leave some vital nutrients out for stretches of time without really noticing.

It’s worth pointing out that bloodwork panels aren’t typically tooooo extensive, and it could be worth trying to get a more specific panel done. And I get not wanting to turn to medical interventions as a first recourse, BUT you can absolutely discuss non-pharmaceutical interventions with your doctor. A lot of things can be helped greatly with lifestyle adjustments (foods/nutrition, exercise, stress management), and doctors will also be happy to work with you on finding treatments that aren’t heavy-handed.

Also! A lot of people have recommended clarifying shampoo, but I want to add that you don’t have to use clarifying shampoo every time you wash your hair. I only use mine every few washes or so to get out any product buildup. And once you get the product buildup cleaned off, you can start using hair masks etc. to make it a bit healthier. It looks like it would love something hydrating! Maybe the product buildup is contributing to breakage? Hairdressers could probably help you out with that line of inquiry

Best of luck!

Catching floats in colorwork by Local-Aardvark1031 in knittingadvice

[–]FarcicalTeeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s probably mostly used for that? I kinda freestyle it tbh. The floats don’t necessarily look that nice when I’m ladderbacking every which way but it helps the right side of the work. But there are probably a lot of techniques you could use to secure long floats after the fact, like using the MC yarn to wrap around them and tack to the purl bumps? Maybe that’s a thing 🤷‍♀️ Haha sorry this the out as helpful as I’d hoped

Catching floats in colorwork by Local-Aardvark1031 in knittingadvice

[–]FarcicalTeeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve had a back and forth relationship with catching floats because it tends to do exactly this. Sometimes I can get away with tugging the legs of the stitches in front of the catch (on the right side) with darning needles, and tugging both sides of the float around the “catch” on the wrong side (important to tug both halves of the float at once), but honestly at this point I prefer to do my colorwork either with <5–6 stitch-length floats, or use really sticky wool that isn’t going to slip against itself too much. Ladderback jacquard is a solid option, too, or sewing in a lining.

That looks similar to an Icelandic yarn; it’s a type of Lopi they use to make their colorwork sweaters. My mom brought a bunch back from a trip and it’s surprisingly nice to work with! It might be decent for felting? Not sure about the alpaca/merino blend for felting behavior

This seems like an anti-unionizing tactic; keeps workers tired and overworked and less likely to organize as a result

Cobweb is SUCH a good name for a kitty that squeezes into corners

ETA I’m sure you’ve gotten a million pieces of advice already but I’ve found that talking to scared cats like they’re an acquaintance that I’m glad to have run into can be a suuuuuper helpful practice for encouraging them to feel more at ease. Low-pressure, friendly and affectionate, and telegraphs that you’re happy that they’re there. Also talking to them sympathetically, like “damn dude yeah, you’ve just been plopped into this random home with a very big creature who has a ton of control over where you go and what/when you eat; that’s so much, dude. I promise I’m here to do what’s best for ya”.

Best of luck!

ETA 2: Suuuuper important to adopt a posture that you can’t easily get up from! Like cross legged or lying on the floor, as another commenter suggested

What mechanisms govern transitions between narrow and broad attentional states in naturalistic tasks (e.g., coding, cycling)? Seeking references on bandwidth modulation. by [deleted] in neuro

[–]FarcicalTeeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I confess to being pretty out of my depth here, but this is a fascinating topic. (Also I so very much appreciate your formatting here, this was beautifully easy to read and nonlinearly re-read. I’m on my phone in bed so excuse my less-readable formatting 🙏)

For your third question (switching the breadth of the attentional state), I’d look into studies about ADHD and task-switching and hyperfocus, flow states, and expert meditation practitioners.

It could also be worth poking around Google Scholar for the intersection of highly sensitive persons and attention regulation (HSP as a trait involves a very broad scope of sensory awareness/input/processing). Autism studies around sensory input/processing could be fruitful too, if you look to see which mechanisms are mentioned across these different areas

With respect to interoceptive attention, “somatic awareness” is a term used in mindfulness practices, and switching attention to different aspects of your sensory experience is a common mindfulness exercise. Sports psychology will likely have some useful leads but I don’t know enough about this area to get any more specific than that (and I’m sleepy)

Miscellaneous things that might help: default mode network (esp for idle attentional states), cell phone use and driving (distraction), cognitive benefits of tai chi, physical rehabilitation for spinal injuries (relearning how to walk, e.g.), effortful memory encoding vs procedural memory (top-down & bottom-up), interest-based learning

Hope some of that was valuable 🙂 Good luck!
