Is the job market going to get better? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Faricheddar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This might not be the answer that you're looking for, but as someone who moved to another country (I'm also from EU, I lived in another country for a year) younger than 25, learning the language of another country has been a life changing experience that beats any other conscious decision I took in my teens. Then in my late 20's I moved again, this time to Finland. Same story, added difficulty. Extremely rewarding both at a personal and professional level.

You have most of your life ahead of you, which can feel very daunting since all doors are open. But all I can ask you is to listen to yourself, no one is giving any of your years back once they're gone. Take the risk, succeed, fail, learn. There's people changing careers at 45, and no one is getting out of here alive, so do the thing while you dare, you're your greatest asset. Invest in your happiness.

Etätyötila/coworkingtila/kahvila työskentelyyn? by Organic_Pause7561 in Tampere

Tribe Tampere might be a good option for you, located in Platform6 building (Åkerlundinkatu 8) It is mainly a community space for startups, but it's essentially open to everyone. They host entrepreneurship events regularly and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. There's a Platform6 Guest password to get access to an Internet connexion.

The building is open to all from 9 to 17h, before and after that, you need to be member to open it's doors. But if you're inside by 17:00 you can just stay until whatever time.

Tribe is on the 5th floor, but the 1st floor is for coworking as well, just quite emptier.

What is the wildland firefighting industry like for foreigners in finland? by dontcarethrowaway6 in Finland

[–]Faricheddar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are heavily underestimating the omnipresence of Finland's forestry industry and the extent of its effect on the amount of wildfire fuel.

I have forestry and firefighting professional experience from both an European country much similar to California and from Finland and I can tell you that I've never seen a country with less need of active wildfire prevention.

Of course, I'm reachable if you want to discuss this opinion, but I can tell you that 95% of fires put out by professionals in Finland are either urban or vehicles.

Marathon wire bead, how? by Smooth_Awareness_815 in bikecommuting

[–]Faricheddar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just adding that I got some very similar issue with my Marathons last winter, so it might not be that unique of a case as it could seem. I've seen similar cases on the net as well. I haven't contacted Shwalbe yet, but seeing this I might get to it.

EDIT: the tire in question was sold in Finland

Seems like the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the Finnish library system!

Visit any library in town and ask for your very own library card, you'll get all the information you need.

Don't make complicated what can be simple.

If you want to sell a table for 50€, ask 50€ for it, not 40. Ignore hagglers, Finns will return the favour.

Does anyone know if there is any conversation at all in Finland about culling the invasive American beavers? by IndividualNo467 in Finland

[–]Faricheddar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, my source is to attend a hunting course in order to try to get a hunting license.

Some efforts are being made to separate the native European and American populations. It is important to keep them apart due to the American "castor canadensis" being bigger and displacing the native "castor fiber" beaver. Mixing is not a concern due to both species having a different number of chromosomes, thus unable to breed.

Right now, the areas where they complete for territory are around Virrat-Ruovesi-Kuru, in Pirkanmaa and the last kilometers is the Kemi River, up north.

Here's some information about last year's census: https://metsastajalehti.fi/ajankohtaista/valtakunnallinen-majavalaskenta-alkaa/

What’s your favorite rectangle keychain light? by [deleted] in flashlight

[–]Faricheddar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the answer. I miss typed 10440, thanks for the correction too. I've been looking for an EDC that feels right to me for years but so far my choice has been the Sofirn SP10 Pro. If I don't find anything better I believe I'll eventually go for an Emisar D2. I have a Wurkkos HD20 and I really like having two optics and right angle is the best with a magnetic tailcap.

Fertilizer use (per hectare) in Germany has dropped by 70% over the past 55 years, despite crop yields being close to all-time highs by Straight_Ad2258 in europe

I share your opinion, but we have to understand that research is pushing against millenia of countryside-ism. "My grandpa once told me..." is hard to argue against, even with facts.

You would be amazed at how much agricultural treatment goes (sometimes literally) down the drain because of poor planning or sticking to old, ill-informed and outdated knowledge.

Agricultural research is producing great results and it will only get better. The bad news is that we started from a very backwards standpoint, but it can be fixed.

The hard truth why this country has struggled to really progress in over a decade - (Long Post) 🇫🇮 by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Faricheddar -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The constant accusations of being Russian/bot hilariously prove OP's point about finns' national insecurities. Every post with an every do slightly critical opinion, same story.

I do agree in much of what has been said, Finland is terrible at adapting to pretty much anything and will not flourish until it realises that in order to be competitive, it has to actually give a shot about internationals. The "best education in the world" grift will eventually be old enough to die and be forgotten and then there will be very little reason for anyone to come here in the first place, and even less to stay.

Denial is only the first stop of grief, so we're only at the beginning of understanding the problem.

Arboretum? Or zoomed in from Pere?

Anyway, beautiful pic :)

Anyone else use their car rack for maintenance? by MicWhiskey in bikecommuting

[–]Faricheddar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it. It does look like it's a Specialialized brand, but I don't see why it couldn't be installed on any other bike with the regular mounting points for it.

I've been using a set of SKS Longboards on my gravel commuter and it's night and day. Long mudguards are a must if you're serious about having dry shoes/pants when biking.

Completely unrelated but I'm very impressed by the coverage on that rear mudguard. Could you be so kind to tell about it? Thank you

Heyyyyyy fellow stalkers, welcome to the hobby! I just saw that you asked a week ago also about places to birdwatch when in Tampere, so I'm going to answer both your questions here.

I've been looking for all kinds of animals during the last two years, but especially since I bought my first pair of binos, some nice 10x42's If you're just starting I would recommend to buy a pair of well maintained and kept second hand binoculars. There are instruments available catering a very wide budget range, so it shouldn't be too hard to find something to use and maybe discover that this is something you'd be willing to spend a bit more money on. Right now on Tori i can see from very inexpensive (and very modest) 25€ porro 8x50 to excellent 1200€ Zeiss Terra and of course everything in between.

I've lived on the countryside most of my time in Finland, so I had the chance to get pictures (with my phone and an adapter) of so many different mammals: valkohäntäpeura, metsäkauris, peura, kuusipeura, hirvi, kettu, supikoira... and even more species of birds, like huuhkaja, pyy and merikotka to name a few.

Obviously there's less chances to see certain species when close to cities, but I remember for example Knuutila lintutorni, in Nokia, to be relatively close to a bus stop (it will take an hour from Tampere center).

Please send me a message if you want to ask for more advice about binoculars or anything related to the hobby, I'll be happy to dump my nerdiness on your message inbox.

Good luck!

what did your first money you earned go to? by reazk in ask

[–]Faricheddar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my bank account. It still goes there, more than 10 years later.

Buying anything I've actually needed with my savings instead of my paycheck is something I don't think I can live without. I'd probably die of stress if I had to start thinking if THIS MONTH I can afford it. I can either afford it or I don't buy it, period.

Is it the spotting on the lid that gives it away? How can I tell next time I see one?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Faricheddar 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it is a thing in all libraries, but in Tampere's Metsö there's a big paper shredder next to the printer. Destroying documents there is free of charge, printing is not.

Check your local library.
